1. What is Psychology? |

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. The word comes from the Greek ‘psyche’ (soul) and ‘logos’ (study). Psychologists use systematic observations, experiments, and measurements to understand how people think, feel, and act. Unlike everyday opinions, psychological claims are tested with evidence.

There are several key perspectives in psychology: the biological approach looks at brain chemistry and genetics; the cognitive approach studies mental processes like memory and problem-solving; the behavioural approach focuses on observable behaviours shaped by the environment; and the sociocultural perspective examines how social context and cultural norms influence us.

In Year 7, you start to think like a psychologist—asking questions such as: Why do I remember some things and forget others? How do my friends affect my decisions? These questions show that psychology connects directly to your everyday life.

2. Sensation and Perception |

Sensation is the process by which our sensory receptors detect physical energy from the environment—light waves, sound vibrations, chemical molecules—and convert it into neural signals. Perception is the active process of organising and interpreting these signals to give them meaning. Sensation is detection; perception is construction.

Our five main senses—vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell—work with specialised cells. For example, rods and cones in the retina detect light, while hair cells in the cochlea respond to sound. Yet the same sensory input can lead to different perceptions. That is why optical illusions, such as the Müller-Lyer illusion where two lines of equal length appear different because of arrow-like tails, are so powerful: they reveal how your brain uses past experience and assumptions to interpret what you see.

Psychologists love studying illusions because they teach us about perceptual errors and the brain’s shortcuts, called heuristics. In Year 7, you learn that perception is not a passive recording of the world; it is an active, interpretive process that can sometimes be tricked.

3. Learning: Classical and Operant Conditioning |

Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour due to experience. Two fundamental forms of learning are classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Both are at the heart of the behavioural perspective.

Classical conditioning was discovered by Ivan Pavlov. He noticed that dogs naturally salivate (unconditioned response) to food (unconditioned stimulus). By repeatedly ringing a bell (neutral stimulus) just before presenting food, the dogs soon began to salivate at the sound of the bell alone. The bell became a conditioned stimulus and salivation a conditioned response. Key terms: acquisition, extinction (when the conditioned response weakens), and spontaneous recovery (the sudden reappearance of an extinguished response).

Operant conditioning, developed by B.F. Skinner, is learning through consequences. Skinner placed rats in a ‘Skinner box’ and found they learned to press a lever for a food reward (positive reinforcement). Reinforcement increases the likelihood of a behaviour; punishment decreases it. Positive reinforcement adds something pleasant (praise, money), while negative reinforcement removes something unpleasant (a loud noise stops when a lever is pressed). Punishment can be positive (adding a scolding) or negative (removing a privilege).

Year 7 students explore real-world examples: a child saying ‘please’ to get a treat (positive reinforcement) or doing homework to avoid losing screen time (negative reinforcement). These simple models help explain many everyday habits.

4. Memory: Encoding, Storage, and Retrieval |

Memory is often described as the process of taking in information (encoding), keeping it over time (storage), and getting it back out when needed (retrieval). The most famous model for Year 7 is the multi-store model, which divides memory into three stores: sensory memory, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM).

Sensory memory holds a large amount of information for a very brief time—less than a second for visual icons and a few seconds for auditory echoes. Only information we pay attention to passes on to short-term memory. STM has a limited capacity of about 7±2 items and lasts around 15–30 seconds without rehearsal. Maintenance rehearsal (simple repetition) can keep information in STM and help transfer it to long-term memory.

Long-term memory is essentially unlimited and can store information for a lifetime. It includes episodic memories (personal events), semantic memories (facts and knowledge), and procedural memories (skills like riding a bike). Retrieving LTM can be easier with cues and context—a phenomenon called context-dependent memory, where you recall better in the same environment where you learned the information.

Forgetting can occur because of decay (memory traces fading over time), interference (new or old information disrupts retrieval), or retrieval failure (the information is available but not accessible). Understanding these processes helps Year 7 students develop revision strategies such as regular rehearsal and the use of mind maps.

5. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |

Social influence is the effect that other people have on our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Two major types are conformity and obedience. They help explain why we sometimes change our behaviour to fit in or follow orders, even when those actions conflict with our own beliefs.

Conformity is adjusting one’s behaviour or thinking to match a group standard. Solomon Asch’s classic line-judgement experiment (simplified for Year 7) showed that people often gave an obviously wrong answer just because everyone else in the group did. The desire to be liked (normative influence) and the belief that the group knows better (informational influence) are key reasons for conformity.

Obedience involves following direct commands, usually from an authority figure. Stanley Milgram’s famous experiment, ethically controversial but conceptually important, demonstrated how ordinary people could deliver what they believed were painful electric shocks to a learner simply because the experimenter told them to continue. The presence of a legitimate authority, the gradual nature of the demands, and the feeling of being ‘just following orders’ all weakened personal responsibility.

In Year 7, you discuss how these forces appear in school life: the pressure to wear certain brands, to laugh at a joke you don’t find funny, or to follow a teacher’s instruction without question. Recognising these influences is the first step toward making independent, thoughtful decisions.

6. Emotion and Motivation |

Emotions are complex psychological states that involve subjective feelings, physiological arousal, and expressive behaviours. Psychologists often identify a set of basic emotions that are universal across cultures: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust. These emotions help us respond quickly to important situations—fear triggers escape, anger prepares us to face a challenge, and happiness reinforces behaviours that are good for us.

Motivation is the need or desire that energises and directs behaviour. A simple but powerful framework is Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. At the base are physiological needs (food, water, sleep). Once these are met, safety needs become important, then belongingness and love, then esteem (achievement, respect). At the top is self-actualisation—the desire to become the best one can be. According to Maslow, we must largely satisfy lower needs before we can be driven by higher ones.

Year 7 students learn to connect these ideas to their own experience: why hunger makes it hard to concentrate in class (physiological need), why friendship problems can feel overwhelming (belongingness), and why mastering a new skill brings genuine satisfaction (esteem and self-actualisation). Emotion and motivation are the fuel behind much of our daily behaviour.

7. Research Methods in Psychology |

Psychology is a science, so psychologists use a variety of research methods to collect and analyse data. At the Year 7 level, you are introduced to three main methods: observations, questionnaires (surveys), and experiments. Each has strengths and weaknesses.

Observations involve watching and recording behaviour in a natural setting (naturalistic observation) or in a controlled environment. They produce rich, detailed information but can be influenced by observer bias—the researcher’s expectations may affect what they notice. Questionnaires ask a set of questions on topics like attitudes, moods, or habits. They can gather data from many people quickly and cheaply, but answers may not be completely honest due to social desirability bias.

Experiments are the only method that can establish cause-and-effect relationships. In a simple experiment, a researcher manipulates one variable (independent variable, IV) and measures its effect on another variable (dependent variable, DV), while keeping all other conditions constant. Ideally, participants are randomly assigned to either an experimental group (which receives the treatment) or a control group (which does not). This allows the researcher to conclude that changes in the DV are due to the IV and not to chance or extraneous factors.

Here is a quick comparison of the three methods:

Method Strength Weakness
Observation Realistic, detailed data Observer bias, cannot infer cause
Questionnaire Large sample, quick Biased answers, low depth
Experiment Shows cause-effect Artificial setting, ethical limits

Understanding these methods allows you to evaluate psychological claims critically and recognise that science is not just a collection of facts but a way of asking and answering questions.

8. Ethical Considerations |

When psychologists conduct research with human or animal participants, they must follow strict ethical guidelines to protect the welfare and dignity of those involved. Ethics are the moral principles that guide right and wrong conduct. For Year 7, five key ethical principles are emphasized: informed consent, right to withdraw, confidentiality, protection from harm, and debriefing.

Informed consent means that participants (or their guardians, if under 16) must be fully informed about the nature of the study and agree to take part without pressure. The right to withdraw guarantees that a participant can stop at any time without penalty. Confidentiality ensures that personal information is not shared publicly; data is usually anonymised.

Protection from harm is perhaps the most important rule: participants should not leave a study in a worse psychological or physical state than when they started. This includes avoiding stress, embarrassment, or discomfort. Debriefing is a conversation after the study where the researcher explains the true purpose, answers questions, and checks for any unintended distress. It is especially vital if any deception was used—for example, in a memory study where participants were not told they would be tested later.

These ethical rules exist because of past studies that mistreated participants. By learning them in Year 7, you start to appreciate that knowledge cannot be pursued at any cost. Respect for people is at the heart of ethical psychology.
