Art might not look like a subject full of equations, but it does have its own ‘formulas’ — sets of rules and guidelines that help artists create successful work. This quick reference handbook covers the essential building blocks you will meet in Year 7 CCEA Art, from the colour wheel to composition rules. Think of each section as a visual recipe: learn the ingredients and you can mix them in your own creative way.

1. The Elements of Art – Your Visual Alphabet |

The elements of art are the basic tools every artist uses. They are line, shape, form, colour, value (tone), texture and space. You can remember them with the phrase ‘Little Sunflowers Feel Cool Very Tall Standing’. Learning to spot and use these seven elements is the first big step in becoming a confident artist.

  • Line – A moving dot that can vary in width, direction and length. /
  • Shape – A 2D enclosed area, like circles or squares. /
  • Form – A 3D object having length, width and depth, like a sphere or cube. /
  • Colour – What we see when light reflects off surfaces, described by hue, value and intensity. /
  • Value (Tone) – How light or dark something is.
  • Texture – How something feels or looks like it would feel. /
  • Space – The area around, between or within objects. /

2. The Colour Wheel: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colours |

The colour wheel is the artist’s main formula for mixing colours. The three primary colours — red, yellow and blue — cannot be made by mixing. When you mix two primary colours, you get secondary colours: red + yellow = orange, yellow + blue = green, blue + red = purple. Mix a primary with a neighbouring secondary and you create tertiary colours like red‑orange or blue‑green.

3. Warm and Cool Colours – Temperature on the Wheel |

The colour wheel can be split into warm and cool halves. Warm colours — reds, oranges and yellows — remind us of fire, sunshine and heat. They tend to advance in a picture, making objects look closer. Cool colours — blues, greens and purples — remind us of water, sky and shade. They often recede, helping to create depth.

Red, Orange, Yellow
  • Cool / 冷: Blue, Green, Purple

When planning a landscape, try using cool colours in the background and warmer colours in the foreground to make the scene feel more three‑dimensional.

4. Complementary Colours – Opposites That Pop |

Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. When placed side by side, they make each other look brighter and more intense. The three classic complementary pairs are: red and green, yellow and purple, blue and orange. This rule is a secret weapon for making artwork ‘pop’ without adding extra paint.

Red ↔ Green, Yellow ↔ Purple, Blue ↔ Orange

5. Analogous Colours – Neighbours in Harmony |

Analogous colours sit next to each other on the wheel, such as yellow, yellow‑green and green. They create calm, comfortable designs because they share similar pigments. Nature is full of analogous colour schemes — think of a forest with different shades of green or a sunset blending orange, red and red‑purple.

  • Example scheme / 示例方案: Blue, Blue‑Green, Green → cool and peaceful / 冷静平和
  • Example scheme / 示例方案: Red, Red‑Orange, Orange → warm and energetic / 温暖而充满活力

6. Value (Tone) – The Light‑to‑Dark Scale |

Value describes how light or dark a colour or surface is. A value scale moves from white through greys to black, often shown in 5 to 10 steps. Adding white to a colour creates a tint; adding black creates a shade. Value gives artwork contrast and form — without it, even a colourful picture would look flat.

Tint = Colour + White / 浅色 = 颜色 + 白
Shade = Colour + Black / 深色 = 颜色 + 黑

7. Texture – Real and Implied |

Texture is how something feels or looks like it would feel. Real texture you can actually touch, such as thick paint or collaged fabric. Implied texture is the illusion of texture on a flat surface, created through mark‑making — drawing zigzag lines for rough bark or smooth shading for glass.

Impasto painting, collage, clay surface
Hatching, cross‑hatching, stippling, smooth blending

8. Space and Depth – Making a Flat Surface Feel 3D |

Artists use several tricks to create the illusion of depth on a flat page. Overlapping places one object in front of another. Size variation makes distant objects smaller. In linear perspective, parallel lines appear to converge at a vanishing point on the horizon line. These are the building blocks for drawing believable landscapes and cityscapes.

All receding lines meet at one vanishing point / 所有后退线交于一个消失点.

9. Composition Basics: The Rule of Thirds |

Composition is how you arrange the parts of your artwork. The rule of thirds divides your page into a 3×3 grid of equal rectangles. Place the main subject along one of the lines or at an intersection point. This keeps your drawing from looking too centred and static — it feels more dynamic and natural to the viewer.

Rule of Thirds Grid / 三分法网格: Imagine two horizontal and two vertical lines / 想象两条横线与两条竖线;place the focal point where they cross.

10. Balance – Symmetrical, Asymmetrical and Radial |

Balance refers to the visual weight of elements in a composition. Symmetrical balance is like a mirror image — both sides of the centre line are roughly the same. Asymmetrical balance uses different objects that have equal visual weight, such as a large light shape balanced by a small dark shape. Radial balance spreads out from a central point, like petals on a flower.

  • Symmetrical / 对称: butterfly wings, a formal face‑on portrait
  • Asymmetrical / 不对称: a still life with one large jug offset by several small apples
  • Radial / 放射状: a mandala, a bicycle wheel, a sunflower

11. Proportion and Scale – Getting Sizes Right | 比例与尺度 – 把尺寸画对

Proportion is the relationship between the sizes of different parts within a whole. In figure drawing, a useful ‘average’ formula is that the adult human figure is about 7–8 heads tall. Changing proportion deliberately can create expressive effects — bigger heads for cartoons, elongated limbs for elegant figures. Scale simply means the size of an object in relation to the world or the page.

12. Pattern and Rhythm – Repeating the Same Beat |

Pattern happens when you repeat a shape, line or colour in a regular way. Rhythm in art is like rhythm in music — it uses repeated elements to guide the viewer’s eye across the picture. Alternating thick and thin lines, or repeating circles of different sizes, creates visual movement and energy.

  • Progressive rhythm / 渐进节奏: shapes that slowly change size or colour

Try combining several of these ‘formulas’ in one sketchbook exercise — for example, use warm analogous colours with an asymmetrical composition and a clear rule of thirds focal point. The more you practise, the more these rules become automatic habits.
