Always start with the lowest power objective lens to locate the specimen. Use the coarse focus knob first, looking from the side to prevent the lens from crushing the slide. Once the image is roughly clear, switch to a higher power and use the fine focus for a sharp image. Never use the coarse focus with the high-power objective, as this can break the slide.
