📚 Year 7 CCEA Biology: Summer Bridging and Preparation Course | 七年级CCEA生物:暑期预习与衔接课程
Moving from primary science to secondary biology is an exciting step. This summer bridging course is designed to help Year 7 students consolidate their knowledge of living things and build confidence for the skills they will need in the CCEA curriculum. We will explore what makes something alive, zoom into cells, discover the variety of life, and link key ideas about the human body, plants and ecosystems. Each topic revisits ideas you may have met in primary school and adds new layers of understanding, so you feel ready to think like a biologist from the very first lesson.
1. What is Biology? |
Biology is the branch of science that studies living organisms and how they interact with their environment. In primary school you may have called this part of science ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’ or simply ‘Nature Study’. Now we give it a formal name and begin to ask deeper questions: How do organisms survive? Why do they look the way they do? How are they connected?
Biologists use observation, experimentation and classification to build our understanding. As you enter Year 7, you will learn to use a microscope, draw accurate labelled diagrams, and write conclusions based on evidence. These are the same tools scientists use every day. Seeing the subject as a real science helps you take ownership of your learning.
2. The Characteristics of Living Things |
To study biology, we must first agree on what it means to be alive. Biologists use a memorable checklist often taught as ‘MRS GREN’. Each letter stands for a life process: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition. All living things carry out these processes, even if they do them in very different ways.
Movement: Animals move their whole bodies to find food or escape danger; plants move parts, such as leaves turning towards light.
Respiration: This is a chemical reaction inside cells that releases energy from food. It is not the same as breathing in and out.
Sensitivity: Organisms detect and respond to changes in their surroundings. A plant bending towards light is showing sensitivity.
Growth: Living things grow by increasing cell number and size. This is a permanent increase, not a temporary swelling after a meal.
Reproduction: The ability to produce offspring. This can be sexual, needing two parents, or asexual, needing only one.
Excretion: The removal of toxic waste products made by chemical reactions in the body. In humans this includes urea in urine and carbon dioxide in breath.
Nutrition: Taking in materials for energy, growth and repair. Plants make their own food by photosynthesis; animals eat other organisms.
3. Cells: The Building Blocks of Life | 细胞:生命的基石
All living things are made of tiny units called cells. Some organisms, like bacteria and amoeba, are unicellular – made of one cell. Most plants and animals are multicellular, with bodies built from millions of cells that work together. A cell is the smallest unit that can carry out all MRS GREN processes.
An animal cell typically has three main parts: a cell membrane that controls what enters and leaves, a nucleus that contains genetic material and controls the cell’s activities, and cytoplasm where most chemical reactions happen. Plant cells have all of these plus a rigid cell wall for support, chloroplasts that capture light energy for photosynthesis, and a large central vacuole containing cell sap.
When you start Year 7, you will learn to use a light microscope to view cells. You will practise preparing a slide of onion epidermis or cheek cells, adding a drop of iodine or methylene blue to stain the structures, and then drawing what you see, labelling the parts clearly.
4. Microorganisms: Friends and Foes |
Microorganisms, or microbes, are living things too small to see with the naked eye. They include bacteria, fungi and viruses, although viruses are often debated because they cannot carry out all life processes on their own. In this bridging course, we start to sort the helpful microbes from the harmful ones.
Helpful bacteria are used to make yoghurt and cheese, and many live in our gut helping us digest food. Decomposer fungi and bacteria break down dead material, recycling nutrients back into the soil. However, harmful microbes can cause diseases such as sore throats, food poisoning or athlete’s foot. Good hygiene, refrigeration and cooking food thoroughly all limit the spread of harmful microbes.
An exciting experiment you might try is growing microbes on agar plates. By swabbing a surface before and after cleaning, you see just how important washing hands can be. This links everyday actions to scientific evidence.
5. The Variety of Life: Classification |
With millions of species on Earth, biologists need a system to organise them. Classification sorts living things into groups based on similarities and evolutionary relationships. In primary school you may have grouped animals into vertebrates and invertebrates. Now we expand this into larger categories called kingdoms.
The five‑kingdom system commonly used includes: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protoctists (mostly single‑celled organisms like amoeba) and Prokaryotes (bacteria, which have no true nucleus). Within the animal kingdom, vertebrates are further divided into five classes: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Each class has key features, such as moist skin in amphibians or feathers in birds.
Learning to use a simple classification key is a core skill. You will be given a set of organisms and asked to identify them by asking a series of yes/no questions, such as ‘Does it have wings?’ or ‘Does it have a backbone?’. This logical approach mirrors how scientists sort biodiversity.
6. Plants and Photosynthesis |
Plants are special because they can make their own food using light energy. This process is called photosynthesis, and it takes place mainly in the leaves inside tiny structures called chloroplasts. The overall word equation for photosynthesis is: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen, in the presence of light energy absorbed by chlorophyll.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Glucose is used by the plant for respiration to release energy, stored as starch, or converted into cellulose for cell walls and into proteins for growth. Oxygen is released into the air as a waste product, which is vital for animals. This single reaction connects plants to all other life.
You can investigate photosynthesis by testing a leaf for starch. Boiling the leaf in water, then heating it in ethanol to remove chlorophyll, and finally adding iodine solution will turn the leaf blue‑black if starch is present. This shows that photosynthesis has occurred.
7. The Human Body: Organs and Systems |
In Year 7 you begin to see the human body as a collection of interacting systems. An organ is a structure made of different tissues that performs a specific job; a system is a group of organs working together, such as the digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system.
The circulatory system, with the heart as its pump, transports blood containing oxygen, nutrients and waste products around the body. The respiratory system brings oxygen into the lungs and removes carbon dioxide. The digestive system breaks down large food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. These systems do not work in isolation – they are linked.
A fun activity is to draw a life‑sized outline of a classmate and place organ cut‑outs in the correct positions. This helps you learn locations such as the heart slightly left of centre, the stomach below the diaphragm, and the kidneys near the back. Knowing where organs sit makes later learning about their functions much clearer.
8. Healthy Eating and Digestion |
Good health depends on a balanced diet that provides all the necessary nutrients. The seven groups are: carbohydrates (for energy), proteins (for growth and repair), lipids or fats (for energy storage and insulation), vitamins and minerals (to keep various body processes healthy), fibre (to keep the gut moving) and water (for chemical reactions and transport).
Digestion begins in the mouth, where teeth break food into smaller pieces and saliva starts to digest starch. The food then travels down the oesophagus to the stomach, where acid and enzymes break down proteins. In the small intestine, digested food is absorbed into the blood; the large intestine absorbs extra water and forms faeces. Understanding this journey shows why eating whole foods and chewing well matters.
CCEA investigations often ask you to test foods for starch (iodine turns blue‑black), glucose (Benedict’s solution turns brick‑red on heating) or protein (biuret reagent turns purple). These practical skills reinforce the idea that biology is based on observable evidence.
9. Ecosystems and Food Chains |
An ecosystem includes all the organisms in a habitat plus the physical environment they interact with. Individual organisms form populations, populations of different species form communities, and the community together with non‑living factors like sunlight, water and soil makes an ecosystem.
Feeding relationships are shown by food chains. A simple chain goes: grass → rabbit → fox. The arrow always points from the eaten to the eater and means ‘is eaten by’. The grass is a producer, the rabbit a primary consumer (herbivore) and the fox a secondary consumer (carnivore). In reality, food webs are much more tangled, with many interconnected chains.
Energy passes along the chain, but much is lost at each level as heat through respiration. This limits the length of food chains. Decomposers such as bacteria and fungi are essential because they break down dead matter and waste, returning minerals to the soil for plants to use again.
10. Scientific Enquiry Skills |
Moving into secondary biology means doing more than remembering facts; you must learn to work scientifically. CCEA expects you to plan investigations, identify variables, collect reliable data and draw conclusions. The three main variable types are: independent (the one you change), dependent (the one you measure) and control variables (all the things you must keep the same to make a fair test).
Writing a hypothesis is a skill you will develop. A hypothesis is not just a guess – it is a clear, testable statement such as ‘If more light is available, then the pondweed will produce more oxygen bubbles per minute.’ You then design a method to test this prediction, using equipment safely and accurately.
Recording data in a table with clear headings and units, plotting a graph, and then describing the pattern are routine tasks. You will also learn to evaluate your experiment by discussing limitations and suggesting improvements. These skills make you a critical thinker, not just a scientist.
