1. Needs and Wants |

Needs are the basic things that people must have to survive. Without them, a person cannot live a healthy life. Examples include clean water, nutritious food, warm shelter, and essential clothing. In business, companies that provide these items often fulfil fundamental human requirements.

Wants, on the other hand, are things that people would like to have but are not essential for survival. Wants are unlimited and vary from person to person. A new video game, a designer handbag, or a holiday abroad are all wants. Businesses spend a lot of effort turning wants into perceived needs through advertising.

2. Goods and Services |

Goods are physical items that can be seen, touched, and stored. They are tangible products. When you buy a book, a bicycle, or a packet of crisps, you are purchasing goods. Goods can be durable, like a sofa, or non-durable, like a loaf of bread that will be consumed quickly.

Services are non-physical actions that are done for you by someone else. You cannot touch or store a service. Examples include a haircut, a bus journey, or a maths tutoring session. Services are intangible, and they are consumed at the point of sale. The quality of a service often depends on the skill and attitude of the person providing it.

3. Scarcity and Opportunity Cost |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem. It means that there are not enough resources in the world to satisfy everyone’s unlimited wants. Because time, money, and raw materials are limited, we have to make choices. Scarcity forces businesses and individuals to decide how to allocate their resources most effectively.

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when you make a choice. If you spend your £20 pocket money on a cinema ticket, the opportunity cost is the new book or computer game you could have bought instead. Businesses constantly calculate opportunity costs when deciding between investment projects.

4. Factors of Production |

Land refers to all the natural resources used to produce goods and services. This includes not just the ground itself, but also forests, water, oil, minerals, and fish in the sea. For a bakery, land would include the wheat grown in fields and the water used in mixing dough.

Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, that goes into production. Factory workers, teachers, nurses, and software engineers all provide labour. The quality of labour can be improved through education and training, which is why businesses often invest in their workforce.

Capital consists of man-made goods used to produce other goods and services. This includes machinery, tools, factories, and vehicles. For example, an oven is a capital good for a pizza restaurant. Capital does not refer to money itself in economics; money is a means to purchase capital goods.

Enterprise is the special factor that brings land, labour, and capital together. An entrepreneur is someone who takes the risk of organising the other factors to create a new business venture. They innovate, make decisions, and take the financial risk in the hope of earning a profit.

5. Enterprise and Entrepreneurship |

A business is any organisation that produces goods or provides services to satisfy consumers’ needs and wants. Businesses can range from a single person selling handmade crafts online to a multinational corporation like a supermarket chain. The main goal of most businesses is to make a profit, though some social enterprises focus on helping people or the environment.

An entrepreneur is an individual who spots a business opportunity and sets up an enterprise to exploit it. They are often creative risk-takers who are willing to invest their own time and money. Famous entrepreneurs like the founders of technology companies show how drive, resilience, and a good idea can change entire industries.

6. Types of Business Ownership |

The legal structure of a business affects how it raises money, how decisions are made, and how much risk the owners face. Year 7 students often learn about four main types: sole trader, partnership, private limited company, and public limited company.

Below is a quick comparison table to help you memorise the key differences:

Type 类型 Number of Owners 所有者人数 Liability for Debts 债务责任 Control 控制权
2 or more, shares sold on stock exchange Board of directors, owned by shareholders

Unlimited liability means the owner’s personal assets, like a house or car, can be used to pay business debts. Limited liability protects personal assets; shareholders only lose the money they invested. In general, larger businesses tend to have limited liability structures.

7. Revenue, Costs and Profit |

Revenue, sometimes called sales turnover, is the total money a business receives from selling its goods or services. It is calculated using the formula: Revenue = Price per unit × Quantity sold. If a shop sells 200 ice creams at £2 each, its revenue is £400.

Costs are all the expenses a business must pay to produce and sell its products. Fixed costs do not change with output, such as monthly rent. Variable costs change directly with how much is produced, such as the cost of flour for a bakery. Total costs = Fixed costs + Variable costs.

Profit is the positive difference between revenue and total costs when revenue is higher. It is the reward for taking business risks. The formula is: Profit = Revenue − Total costs. If the same shop’s revenue is £400 and the costs for the ice creams, rent, and wages are £320, the profit is £80. A loss occurs when costs exceed revenue.

8. Market, Demand and Supply |

A market is any place or situation where buyers and sellers meet to exchange goods or services. This can be a physical location like a high street shop, a local farmers’ market, or an online platform. The concept of a market does not require a building; it simply requires willing buyers and sellers.

Demand is the quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices over a period of time. Generally, when the price falls, demand rises; when the price rises, demand falls. This relationship is called the law of demand and is influenced by factors such as tastes, income, and the price of substitutes.

Supply is the quantity of a product that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices over a period of time. The law of supply states that as the price rises, the quantity supplied usually increases, because higher prices can mean higher profits. Supply can be affected by production costs, technology, and natural events.

9. The Marketing Mix |

The marketing mix is often taught using the ‘4 Ps’: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. These are the key elements that a business can control to influence customers’ decisions and achieve its goals.

Product refers to the good or service that meets customers’ needs. It includes design, quality, packaging, and the brand name. A successful product stands out from competitors and offers real value to the user.

Price is the amount customers pay. Pricing strategies can include setting a low price to attract many customers or a high price to suggest luxury. The price must cover costs and generate profit, but it also sends a message about the product’s quality.

Place involves how and where the product is sold to reach the target customer. This could be through a retail store, a website, or a distributor. The distribution channel must be convenient and efficient for the end consumer.

Promotion is all the methods a business uses to communicate with customers and persuade them to buy. Promotion includes advertising on social media, television commercials, sales promotions like ‘buy one get one free’, and public relations. The goal is to raise awareness and encourage purchases.

10. Competition and Adding Value |

Competition describes the rivalry among businesses trying to attract the same customers. In a competitive market, firms must work hard to offer better quality, lower prices, or unique features. Competition can lead to innovation and benefits for consumers, but it also puts pressure on profit margins.

Adding value is the process of increasing the difference between the cost of materials and the selling price. A business adds value by transforming raw materials in a way that makes the final product more desirable. For example, a carpenter takes plain wood and creates a beautiful table; the added value is reflected in the higher price customers are willing to pay.

Ways to add value include branding, excellent customer service, convenient packaging, and unique design. Adding value is crucial because it directly increases a business’s potential profit without necessarily raising material costs by the same proportion. It is the essence of why businesses exist: to create something worth more than the sum of its parts.
