1. What is Engineering? |

Engineering is the use of science and maths to design, build, and improve things. Engineers solve problems by creating new products, structures, and systems. There are many branches, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, but they all share a common goal: making life better, safer, and more efficient.

2. Safety in Engineering |

Safety is the number one rule in any workshop or lab. You must always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, aprons, and sturdy shoes. Long hair should be tied back, and loose clothing must be secured. Before using any tool or machine, listen to your teacher’s instructions and never rush a job – accidents often happen when people cut corners.

3. Tools and Equipment |

In Year 7, you will get hands-on with basic engineering tools. Common hand tools include hacksaws for cutting metal, files for smoothing edges, spanners and screwdrivers for assembly, and bench vices for holding work steady. You may also use measuring tools like rulers, tape measures, and callipers. Each tool has a specific job, and learning to use them correctly builds your practical skills.

4. Measuring and Marking Out | 测量与标记

Accuracy is crucial in engineering. Before cutting or shaping a material, you need to measure and mark it carefully. Use a steel rule for straight measurements and a try square to draw right angles. Marking out is done with a scriber on metal or a pencil on wood. Always measure twice and cut once – this saying reminds you to double-check before making permanent changes.

5. Materials and their Properties |

Engineers choose materials based on their properties. The main groups you study are metals (e.g., mild steel, aluminium), plastics (e.g., acrylic, PVC), and woods (e.g., pine, MDF). Key properties include strength, hardness, toughness, flexibility, and conductivity. For example, aluminium is lightweight and resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for aircraft parts.

Pine 松木 Soft, easy to work 柔软,易加工 Furniture, shelves 家具,搁板

6. Structures: Bridges and Towers |

Structures must be strong and stable. You will learn about beam bridges, arch bridges, and truss bridges. A truss uses triangles to spread the load, making the structure rigid. Towers, like electricity pylons, are often built as lattice structures because triangles resist deforming. The concepts of tension (pulling force) and compression (pushing force) explain why some parts stretch while others squash.

7. Simple Machines: Levers |

A lever is a simple machine that helps you multiply force. It consists of a rigid bar that pivots on a fulcrum. There are three classes of lever. In a first-class lever, the fulcrum is between the effort and the load, like a seesaw. A second-class lever has the load in the middle, for example, a wheelbarrow. Third-class levers have the effort in the middle, such as tweezers or a fishing rod.

Mechanical advantage = Load ÷ Effort

8. Gears and Drive Systems |

Gears are toothed wheels that transmit motion and force. When a small gear drives a larger gear, the speed decreases but the turning force (torque) increases – this is called gearing down. When a large gear drives a smaller one, speed increases and torque decreases – gearing up. Simple gear trains and chain drives can be found in bicycles, where pedalling power is transferred to the back wheel.

9. Introduction to Electronic Circuits |

An electronic circuit is a path through which electricity flows. You will learn about basic components: batteries (power source), wires (conductors), switches (control), resistors (limit current), and LEDs (light output). A series circuit has only one loop, so if one component fails, the whole circuit stops. In a parallel circuit, components are on separate branches, so each one works independently.

10. The Design Process |

Engineering isn’t just about making – it starts with a design process. You follow steps: identify a problem, research, generate ideas, choose a solution, make a prototype, test and evaluate, then improve. Drawing skills are important, including crating (building up 3D sketches from simple boxes) and isometric drawing. A good design meets the specification and is within the budget and time limit.

11. Sustainable Engineering and Modern Technologies |

Today’s engineers think carefully about the environment. Sustainable engineering means using materials and energy in ways that do not harm the planet. This includes recycling, reducing waste, and designing products that last longer. You might also explore new technologies like CAD (Computer-Aided Design) for creating digital models and 3D printing for rapid prototyping. Renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels open up exciting engineering challenges.
