📚 Year 7 CCEA Media: Case Study in Practice | CCEA

Welcome to this hands-on guide to media case studies. In Year 7 CCEA Media, you will learn to look at media texts closely, asking questions about how they are made and why they affect us. This article walks you through real-world examples, tools and exercises that will build your confidence for analysing anything from a film poster to an Instagram post.

1. What Is a Media Case Study? |

A media case study is an in-depth look at one specific media text, such as an advertisement, a magazine cover or a social media post. Instead of just saying whether you like it or not, you investigate the creative choices behind it – the colours, the words, the images and the sounds – to understand what message is being sent and who it is meant for.

Every case study has a purpose: to persuade, inform or entertain. When you practise case studies, you train your eye to spot patterns, techniques and hidden meanings that casual viewers often miss. This skill is at the heart of CCEA Media Studies.

2. Your Analytical Toolbox |

Before we jump into the examples, let’s gather the basic tools. Media analysts use a shared vocabulary to describe what they see and hear. Here are the most important ones for Year 7:

Denotation is what you literally see or hear – the straightforward description. Connotation is the deeper meaning or feeling that something suggests. For example, a red rose denotes a flower; it connotes love or romance.

Target audience is the group of people the media text is aimed at, defined by age, gender, interests or lifestyle. Representation is how media shows people, places or ideas, which can sometimes rely on stereotypes. Mise-en-scène means everything placed in a scene – props, costumes, lighting, setting – that helps tell a story.

We will also pay attention to camera angles, colour palette, typography, sound and layout. Keep this toolbox handy as we move through each case study.

3. Case Study 1: Film Poster for ‘Space Dinos’ |

Imagine a large film poster displayed in a cinema foyer. At the centre, a young astronaut in a shiny silver suit rides on the back of a bright green Tyrannosaurus rex. They are leaping across a cratered moon surface, with a swirling purple-and-orange galaxy and a distant planet glowing behind them. The film title ‘Space Dinos’ is written in chunky, 3D metallic letters with cracked edges. The tagline at the top shouts ‘THE BIGGEST ADVENTURE IN THE GALAXY’.

Let’s apply our tools. The denotation is a person in a spacesuit on a dinosaur, in space with a title and tagline. The connotation of the orange and purple galaxy suggests excitement, mystery and otherworldly fun. The green dinosaur stands out against the dark background, making the poster feel loud and playful. The chunky, cracked letters suggest action, danger and perhaps a rocky journey.

Who is the target audience? The cartoon-like style, bright colours and tagline language point to families with children aged 6–12, but the sci-fi elements may also attract teenagers. The poster promises a fun, fast-paced film. Notice that the astronaut wears a helmet, so we cannot see the face – this allows many viewers to imagine themselves in that role. That is a deliberate production choice.

4. Case Study 2: TV Advert for ‘Sunny Bites’ Cereal |

Picture a 30-second television commercial set in a bright, sunlit kitchen. A mother and two children are laughing as they pour golden cereal flakes into colourful bowls. The sound of a crisp crunch fills the speakers, followed by cheerful ukulele music. An animated smiling sun character winks and slides across the screen while a voiceover says, ‘Start every day with a bowl of sunshine – Sunny Bites, packed with 8 vitamins and whole grain goodness.’

The denotation is a family eating cereal, music and a voiceover. The connotations are warmth, health, happiness and family togetherness. The golden cereal flakes mirror the yellow colour of sunlight, while the white kitchen suggests cleanliness and freshness. The animated sun is a friendly character, building a connection with younger viewers and making the product feel less like a processed food and more like a natural treat.

The sound design is crucial here. The loud crunch emphasises texture, making viewers almost taste the cereal. The ukulele melody is light and catchy, encouraging a positive mood. The voiceover is delivered in a soft, reassuring female voice, which research often shows is trusted by parent audiences. The target audience is clearly parents shopping for breakfast food, but the bright colours and animation also hook children who might pester their parents to buy it.

5. Case Study 3: ‘Teen Vibe’ Magazine Cover |

The cover of ‘Teen Vibe’ shows a female teenage celebrity smiling directly at the camera. She wears glittery make-up, a denim jacket and a chunky necklace. The magazine masthead is in a bubbly sans-serif font in hot pink. Cover lines scream in capital letters: ’10 Ways to Crush Your Exams’, ‘OMG! First Date Tips’, and ‘Win a Shopping Spree!’. A small burst shape promises ‘FREE Lip Gloss Inside’.

Denotation: a young celebrity photo and colourful text. Connotation: the direct eye contact makes the reader feel personally addressed, building a parasocial relationship. The pink and glittery style connotes fun, femininity and a carefree teenage life. The sans-serif font looks modern and informal, unlike a serious newspaper. Capital letters and exclamation marks create urgency and excitement, encouraging impulse purchases at the checkout.

Consider representation. The cover focuses heavily on appearance, romance and material rewards. This may suggest that teenage girls are mainly concerned with how they look and who they date. While some readers enjoy this, media students should ask: is this a fair or realistic representation of all teenagers? What about those who are interested in science, sport or gaming? The magazine constructs a specific version of teen identity.

6. Case Study 4: Instagram Post by a Fitness Influencer | 案例四:健身网红的Instagram帖子

Scroll through a typical Instagram feed and you might see a post from a fitness influencer with 150k followers. The image shows a young woman in a matching sports bra and leggings, holding a green smoothie bottle. She stands in a bright gym, looking away from the camera with a relaxed smile. The caption reads, ‘No excuses! Just finished my morning workout. Fuel your body right with @GreenBlend protein shakes. #FitLife #ad #StrongNotSkinny’.

Right away, the hashtag #ad tells us this is paid promotion. The denotation includes a fit person, a branded product and an energetic gym background. The connotation of the green smoothie is health, nature and cleanliness. The woman’s calm smile and relaxed posture suggest that fitness is easy and enjoyable, not a struggle. The caption uses direct, motivational language, creating a sense of community with followers.

Now think about target audience. The style, language and product appeal primarily to young women aged 16–25 who are interested in health and body image. The influencer’s physique sets a standard that some viewers might aspire to. As media analysts, we note how this post represents an idealised version of fitness that may not be realistic for everyone. The lighting is soft, the angles are carefully chosen, and the post excludes any mention of effort, rest days or balanced indulgences.

7. Deeper Analysis: Representation and Stereotypes |

Across our case studies, we have seen how media texts represent groups of people. The cereal advert shows a traditional nuclear family with a mother in the kitchen, which might reinforce the stereotype that cooking and child-rearing are women’s roles. The magazine cover presents a narrow view of teenage girlhood centred on beauty and romance. These choices are not accidental – media producers select what to show and what to leave out.

Challenge yourself to spot stereotypes and ask why they are used. Sometimes they provide a quick shortcut for audiences to recognise a character or situation. However, repeated stereotypes can shape how we see the world. In your CCEA work, you can earn marks by pointing out both the representation and the possible reasons behind it, then offering alternative representations that could have been used.

8. Peer Feedback and Self-Review |

After drafting a case study analysis, it is useful to swap your work with a partner. Use this checklist to give constructive feedback:

Does the analysis start with clear denotation before moving to connotation? Are at least two media language terms used correctly, such as mise-en-scène, colour palette or target audience? Has the writer linked the producer’s choices to the intended effect on the audience? Is the representation considered, and is a stereotype (if present) identified and briefly discussed?

Self-review works the same way. Read your own paragraph aloud and highlight each media term you used. If you have only used one or two, go back and add more. Also check that you have provided evidence from the text – mention specific colours, words or sounds.

9. Quick-fire Practice Tasks |

Test your skills on these short examples. For each one, write 3–4 sentences covering denotation, connotation, target audience and one media language term.

Task A: A fizzy drink poster shows a snowboarder in mid-air against a bright blue sky. The drink can is frosty with ice crystals, and the slogan says ‘UNLEASH THE CHILL’.

Task B: A news website homepage has a large headline ‘BREAKING: STORM CLOSES SCHOOLS’ in bold black letters, a dark cloudy photo, and a red ‘LIVE’ banner in the corner.

Task C: A meme shows a confused-looking cat sitting at a table with a cup of coffee, captioned ‘Me trying to understand Monday mornings’.

Try to answer each task within five minutes. Then compare your notes with a classmate. Notice how the same text can generate slightly different interpretations – that is fine, as long as you back up your points with evidence from the text.

10. Top Tips for Your CCEA Assessments | CCEA

When you face a case study question in a CCEA assessment, keep these tips in mind. First, always start by describing what is literally there – the denotation. Markers look for structured answers that move from description to interpretation. Second, turn every ‘what’ into a ‘why’. Do not just say ‘the font is large’; explain why the designer chose a large font and how it makes the audience feel or think.

Third, connect your ideas to the target audience explicitly. Use phrases like ‘this appeals to the audience because…’ or ‘the producer has used this to make the audience feel…’. Fourth, sprinkle in media terminology naturally – denotation, connotation, colour palette, mise-en-scène, tagline, layout, representation – but do not force them. Finally, write in full sentences and proofread for spelling, as clarity always leaves a good impression.

Remember, case studies are like detective work. You are looking for clues that reveal the hidden messages behind everyday media. The more you practise, the sharper your analytical eye becomes. Good luck, and enjoy the process of discovering how media shapes our world.
