Let’s step into this world together and see how the skills you’ve already gained in storytelling, art, and technology will flourish in your new learning journey.

1. Welcome to Media Studies |

Congratulations on starting Year 7! This year you will begin an exciting new subject: Media Studies. In the CCEA curriculum, Media Studies helps you understand the media world around you — from the films you watch to the social media you use daily. You will learn to ask critical questions about what you see, hear, and read. Why was this advertisement made? Who is it trying to reach? How does a news story influence opinions? These are the kinds of questions media students explore.

The transition from primary school can feel like a big jump, but this guide will help you understand what Media Studies is all about and how you can prepare for success. Your teachers will encourage you to share your own media experiences and to develop a vocabulary that lets you discuss them in a focused, analytical way. By the end of Year 7, you’ll be surprised at how differently you watch a simple television advert.

2. What is Media? |

The word ‘media’ is the plural of ‘medium’. A medium is a channel of communication. Media are the different ways we send and receive messages, ideas, and entertainment. Think of television, radio, newspapers, websites, video games, and music streaming platforms. In Media Studies, we examine both traditional media (like printed magazines) and new media (like TikTok or YouTube). We explore how they shape our understanding of the world.

Understanding media is important because we spend so much time consuming it. By studying it, you become more media literate — that means you can analyse, evaluate, and even create your own media messages. Media literacy is a life skill, helping you to spot bias, recognise persuasive techniques, and make informed choices about what to believe and share online.

3. Key Media Forms |

CCEA Media Studies introduces you to different media forms. These categories help us organise the vast world of media. The main forms you will encounter in Year 7 include: moving image (film, television, online video), audio (radio, podcasts), print (newspapers, magazines, posters), and digital/online media (websites, social media, apps). Each form has its own language and conventions. For example, a film trailer uses quick cuts and dramatic music to excite an audience, while a newspaper front page relies on headlines and images to grab attention.

As you move through Year 7, you will learn to identify these forms and discuss what makes them effective or persuasive. You’ll start to notice that a podcast and a music video, though both media, use sound and visuals in very different ways to connect with you. By classifying media, you build a framework that makes analysis much easier.

4. The Media Triangle: Text, Audience, Production |

A useful framework in Media Studies is the media triangle. It has three points: Text (the media product itself), Audience (the people who consume it), and Production (the process and institutions that create it). All three are connected. When you analyse any media text — such as an advert or a music video — you should think about these three aspects. What is the text saying? Who is it for? Who made it and why?

In Year 7, you will practise using this triangle to break down simple media examples. It will become a habit every time you encounter a new piece of media. You might, for example, look at a cereal box and consider: the text is the box design and words; the audience is children and parents; the production involves the cereal company and a design team. The triangle ensures no important angle is left out.

5. Deconstructing Media Texts: Codes and Conventions |

To understand a media text, we deconstruct it — we take it apart and examine its components. Two key terms you will learn are ‘codes’ and ‘conventions’. Codes are the systems of signs that create meaning: technical codes (camera angles, lighting, editing) and symbolic codes (colours, objects, body language). Conventions are the accepted ways of doing things in a specific genre or form. For example, a horror film convention is a dark, isolated setting; a news broadcast convention is a presenter looking directly at the camera and speaking in a serious tone.

In your lessons, you might look at a print advert and identify the codes and conventions used to sell a product. You’ll ask: what colours are chosen? What is the model’s expression? How is the text placed? These analytical skills are at the heart of Media Studies and will be practiced on a wide range of texts, from video game covers to charity campaign posters.

6. Exploring Genre |

Genre is a French word that means ‘type’ or ‘kind’. In media, genres group texts that share similar conventions. You already know many film genres: comedy, action, fantasy, romance. But genre also applies to television, music, magazines, and video games. Studying genre helps us predict what a media text might contain and how it will make us feel. Producers use genre to attract specific audiences. Audiences use genre to choose what to watch or listen to.

Year 7 tasks might involve looking at a film poster and deciding which genre it belongs to, using evidence from the images, fonts, and colours. You will learn that genres can also mix — a ‘rom-com’ is a romantic comedy. Hybrid genres, like sci-fi horror, show how creative producers can be when combining familiar elements to surprise audiences.

7. Representation in Media |

Media texts do not just reflect reality; they re-present it. Representation is how media portrays people, places, events, and ideas. When you see a character in a TV drama, the producers have made choices about their age, gender, ethnicity, and personality to create a certain impression. You will begin to think about questions such as: Who is represented and who is left out? Are stereotypes being used? A stereotype is a simplified and often unfair image of a group of people.

In Year 7, activities might ask you to look at a cereal box cartoon character and discuss how it represents children or families. You’ll learn to spot when representations are positive, negative, or limited. By examining representation, you become more aware of the messages media send about different groups of people and start to challenge unfair portrayals.

8. Audience and Purpose |

Every media text is created with an audience in mind. The audience could be broad (like a family TV show) or niche (like a magazine for serious gamers). Understanding audience is central to Media Studies. Purpose is the reason a text was made. Common purposes are to inform, to entertain, to persuade,
