Philosophy is an exciting subject that encourages Year 7 students to think deeply, ask big questions, and explore different ways of understanding the world. In the CCEA curriculum, core topics include what philosophy is, how to construct arguments, ethical theories such as utilitarianism and deontology, the nature of knowledge, personal identity, free will, and arguments for the existence of God. This guide provides a clear, structured revision of the essential knowledge every student needs to succeed.

1. What is Philosophy? |

The word ‘philosophy’ comes from the Greek words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom), meaning ‘the love of wisdom’. Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, and the mind. It encourages us to think critically and not simply accept things at face value.

Philosophy is often divided into three main branches: metaphysics (the study of reality), epistemology (the study of knowledge), and ethics (the study of right and wrong). Metaphysics asks, ‘What is real?’ Epistemology asks, ‘How do we know?’ Ethics asks, ‘How should we live?’

2. The Value of Questions |

Philosophy begins with wonder and questioning. The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates famously used a method of asking probing questions to help people examine their beliefs. This is known as the Socratic method.

Asking ‘Why?’ and ‘What do you mean?’ helps to clarify ideas and uncover hidden assumptions. In philosophy, there are no stupid questions – only questions that lead us closer to the truth.

3. Arguments, Premises, and Conclusions |

An argument in philosophy is not a quarrel but a set of statements where some (the premises) are intended to support another statement (the conclusion). For example: Premise 1: All humans are mortal. Premise 2: Socrates is a human. Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

A good argument is valid (the conclusion logically follows from the premises) and sound (the premises are true). We evaluate arguments by checking truth and logic.

4. Logic and Fallacies |

Logic is the study of correct reasoning. In philosophy, we use logical rules to avoid errors in thinking. A fallacy is a common mistake in reasoning that weakens an argument.

Example of a fallacy: Ad hominem – attacking the person instead of their argument. ‘You can’t trust her argument because she’s young.’ This is irrelevant to the truth of the claim.

Another fallacy: Straw man – misrepresenting someone’s argument to make it easier to attack. Learning fallacies helps us think more clearly.

5. Ethical Dilemmas |

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that examines moral values and principles. An ethical dilemma occurs when you have to choose between two or more actions, each of which has moral reasons for and against it.

Famous example: The Trolley Problem. A runaway trolley is heading towards five people on the track. You can pull a lever to divert it to a side track with only one person. Should you sacrifice one to save five? This dilemma tests our moral reasoning.

6. Utilitarianism: The Greatest Good | 功利主义:最大幸福

Utilitarianism is an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. It argues that the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.

This is a consequentialist theory, meaning it judges actions by their outcomes. If pulling the lever in the Trolley Problem saves more lives, a utilitarian would say you should pull it. However, critics argue it can justify sacrificing individuals for the majority.

7. Deontology: Duty and Rules |

Deontology is an ethical theory associated with Immanuel Kant. It focuses on duties and rules rather than consequences. According to Kant, some actions are intrinsically right or wrong, regardless of the outcome.

Kant’s Categorical Imperative states that we should act only according to rules that could be universal laws. For example, if you consider lying, ask: ‘What if everyone lied?’ If that would lead to a contradiction or a world you wouldn’t want, then lying is wrong.

In the Trolley Problem, a deontologist might say it is wrong to actively kill one person, even to save five, because killing is intrinsically wrong. This contrasts with utilitarianism.

8. What is Knowledge? |

Epistemology asks: ‘What does it mean to know something?’ A classic definition is that knowledge is justified true belief. You know P if: (1) P is true, (2) you believe P, and (3) you have good reasons (justification) for believing P.

However, the philosopher Edmund Gettier presented cases where someone has a justified true belief but still does not seem to have knowledge, leading to deeper debates about the nature of knowledge.

Example: You look at a clock that stopped exactly 12 hours ago but unbeknownst to you it still shows the correct time. Your belief that it is 3 o’clock is justified and true, but is it knowledge? This shows the difficulty in defining knowledge.

9. Personal Identity: Who Are You?

Personal identity is the philosophical question of what makes you the same person over time. The Ship of Theseus thought experiment illustrates this: if over time every part of a ship is replaced, is it still the same ship?

Applied to humans, if all the cells in your body are replaced over years, are you still the same person? Theories of personal identity include the bodily continuity theory (same physical body) and the psychological continuity theory (same memories, personality).

Another key concept: the soul theory, which says a non-physical soul makes you who you are. These ideas connect to questions about life after death.

10. Does God Exist? The Design Argument |

The philosophy of religion explores questions about God’s existence. The Design Argument (or Teleological Argument) suggests that the complexity and order in the universe point to an intelligent designer.

William Paley’s watchmaker analogy: if you found a watch on the ground, you would infer a watchmaker because of its intricate parts working together for a purpose. Similarly, the universe, with its complex life and laws, appears designed.

Critics argue that natural processes like evolution by natural selection can explain apparent design without a designer. This debate encourages critical thinking about evidence and belief.
