1. Types of Data |

In statistics, data can be categorical (qualitative) or numerical (quantitative). Categorical data describes qualities, like favourite colour or eye colour. Numerical data involves numbers, such as height or number of siblings.

Numerical data can be discrete (counted, e.g. number of pets) or continuous (measured, e.g. temperature). Understanding the type helps you choose the right chart and summary.

2. Collecting Data |

Data can be collected through surveys, observations, or experiments. A survey might ask classmates about their favourite fruit. It is important to ask clear questions and record answers accurately.

A tally chart is often used during data collection to organise counts efficiently. Each tally mark represents one item, and groups of five make counting easier.

3. Tally Charts and Frequency Tables |

A tally chart uses tally marks to record data. The fifth mark crosses the previous four. After collecting data, you can create a frequency table showing categories and their frequencies (counts).

Example: Favourite colours – Red: 4, Blue: 7, Green: 3. This organises raw data into a clear summary.

4. Pictograms | 象形图

A pictogram represents data using pictures or symbols. Each symbol can stand for 1, 2, 5, or 10 items. A key explains what one symbol represents.

When drawing a pictogram, make sure symbols are the same size and neatly arranged. Half-symbols can show partial quantities.

Pictograms are easy to read and compare categories visually.

5. Bar Charts | 条形图

Bar charts display categorical data with rectangular bars. The height or length of each bar represents the frequency. Bars have equal width and gaps between them.

Axis labels and a title are essential. The vertical axis (y-axis) shows frequency, and the horizontal axis (x-axis) shows categories.

Bar charts can be drawn horizontally or vertically. They make comparisons straightforward.

6. Line Graphs | 折线图

Line graphs are used to show how data changes over time. Points are plotted and connected by straight lines. The x-axis often represents time.

They can reveal trends, such as temperature rising during the day. Multiple lines can compare different sets of data.

Always label axes and give a clear title. Use a ruler to join points for accuracy.

7. Pie Charts | 饼图

A pie chart displays data as slices of a circle. Each slice represents a category’s proportion of the total. The whole circle equals 100% or 360°.

To construct a pie chart, you calculate the angle for each category: angle = (frequency ÷ total) × 360°. Using a protractor, draw each sector.

Pie charts are excellent for showing relative sizes, but not for precise comparisons.

8. Mean | 平均数

The mean (average) is calculated by adding all values together and dividing by the number of values.

Mean = (Sum of all data values) ÷ (Number of values)

For example, the mean of 3, 5, 7, and 9 is (3+5+7+9) ÷ 4 = 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

The mean gives a typical value but can be affected by outliers.

9. Median and Mode |

The median is the middle value when data is ordered from smallest to largest. If there are two middle numbers, the median is their mean.

Example: For 2, 3, 7, 9, 11, the median is 7. For 2, 3, 7, 9, the median is (3+7)÷2 = 5.

The mode is the value that appears most often. A data set can have one mode, more than one mode (bimodal), or no mode at all.

The median is not affected by extremely high or low values, making it useful for skewed data.

10. Range | 极差

The range measures the spread of data. It is the difference between the largest and smallest values.

Range = Largest value – Smallest value

A small range means data values are close together; a large range shows they are spread out.

For example, the heights (cm) 150, 155, 160, 170 have a range of 170 – 150 = 20 cm.

11. Introduction to Probability |

Probability describes how likely an event is to happen. It can be expressed in words (impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, certain) or as a fraction between 0 and 1.

Probability = Number of favourable outcomes ÷ Total number of outcomes

Equally likely outcomes have the same chance. The probability scale runs from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain).

For a fair six-sided die, the probability of rolling a 3 is 1/6.

12. The Statistical Enquiry Cycle |

A statistical investigation follows a cycle: pose a question, collect data, analyse the data, and interpret results to draw conclusions.

Example: ‘What is the most common way Year 7 students travel to school?’ You would survey, tally, create a bar chart, find the mode, and write a statement.

This cycle helps you think systematically about data and make informed decisions.
