1. What Is Business? |
At its simplest, a business is an organisation that provides goods or services to customers. Goods are physical items you can touch, like books, trainers, or pizza. Services are intangible actions that someone does for you, such as a haircut, a bus ride, or a music streaming subscription. Every business exists to satisfy some kind of human want or need, and in return it earns money.
Businesses come in many sizes – from a child selling lemonade at a stand to a giant corporation like Apple. They also operate in different sectors. But at their core, they all combine resources such as people, materials, and money to create value. Without businesses, our daily lives would look very different!
2. The Basic Economic Problem: Scarcity and Choice |
Why do we need businesses at all? The answer lies in a concept called the basic economic problem. There are limited resources on our planet, but people have unlimited wants. This gap between what we want and what we can actually have is known as scarcity. Because of scarcity, we must make choices about how to use our resources.
For an individual, scarcity means you cannot have every game, gadget, or pair of trainers you desire. For a business, scarcity means deciding what to produce with limited raw materials, workers, and time. In economics and business studies, we often say that resources are the factors of production: land, labour, capital, and enterprise. Every business decision involves trade-offs.
3. Demand and Supply |
Demand refers to how much of a product customers are willing and able to buy at different prices. Usually, when the price goes up, demand goes down. Supply refers to how much of a product businesses are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices. Typically, when the price rises, supply increases because producers want to earn more profit.
The interaction of demand and supply helps determine the market price – the point where what buyers want equals what sellers are willing to supply. This is often called the equilibrium. Understanding demand and supply is one of the most powerful tools in business, because it explains why concert tickets can be so expensive or why some toys sell out quickly at Christmas.
4. How Markets Work | 市场是如何运作的
A market is any place or system where buyers and sellers come together to exchange goods, services, or resources. This does not have to be a physical place like a shopping mall. Online platforms such as eBay, local farmers’ markets, and even the stock exchange are all markets. In a market, prices serve as signals that help both sides make decisions.
There are different types of markets. Some are highly competitive, with many sellers offering similar products, like the market for bread. Others may be dominated by just a few big firms, like the market for search engines. As a young business student, you will start by looking at how competition affects prices and customer choice.
5. Entrepreneurs and Business Ideas |
An entrepreneur is someone who takes the risk of starting and running a business. They spot opportunities where others see problems. For example, an entrepreneur might notice that people in their area have to travel far to buy fresh vegetables and decide to open a local greengrocer’s shop. Entrepreneurs are often creative, resilient, and willing to learn from failure.
Coming up with a business idea is not just about inventing something entirely new. It can also mean improving an existing product, offering a better service, or finding a cheaper way to produce something. Many successful businesses began with simple ideas, such as selling books online or offering a ride-sharing app. In the summer, challenge yourself to think like an entrepreneur: what gap could you fill in your school or neighbourhood?
6. Types of Business: Sole Trader, Partnership and Company |
Businesses can be organised in different legal structures. A sole trader is a business owned and run by one person. It is the simplest form, and the owner keeps all the profits but also bears all the risks and debts personally. A partnership involves two or more people sharing the ownership, responsibilities, and profits. They usually sign a partnership agreement to set out the rules.
A company, sometimes called a corporation, is a more complex structure. It has a separate legal identity from its owners, who are called shareholders. This means the company itself can own assets, sign contracts, and be sued. The shareholders’ personal assets are usually protected, which is called limited liability. Well-known companies like Nike or Samsung are often private or public limited companies.
7. Business Objectives: Profit, Growth and Social Responsibility |
Every business has objectives, which are the targets it wants to achieve over a certain period. The most common objective is to make a profit. Profit is calculated as total revenue minus total costs. It rewards the owners for taking risks and provides funds to reinvest in the business. However, profit is rarely the only objective.
Many businesses also aim for growth. Growth can mean opening more branches, selling more products, or increasing market share. Other objectives include survival, especially for new businesses, providing a high-quality service, or being socially responsible. A socially responsible business might try to reduce pollution, use sustainable materials, or support local charities. These goals can sometimes conflict, and managers must strike a balance.
8. Stakeholders: Who Cares About a Business? |
A stakeholder is any individual or group that has an interest in or is affected by a business’s activities. This goes far beyond the owners. Employees want good wages and job security. Customers want quality products at fair prices. Suppliers want to be paid on time. The local community wants the business to create jobs and not damage the environment. Even the government is a stakeholder, because it collects taxes and sets rules.
Different stakeholders often have different, and sometimes opposing, priorities. A decision to move a factory to another country might please shareholders looking for higher profits but upset employees who lose their jobs. Good business managers need to consider the stakeholder perspective and communicate clearly. It is like keeping many plates spinning at once.
9. Classification of Business Activity: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary |
The economy is often divided into three sectors based on the type of work businesses do. The primary sector involves extracting or harvesting natural resources. Examples are farming, fishing, mining, and oil drilling. The secondary sector takes these raw materials and turns them into finished or semi-finished goods. This includes factories that make cars, clothing, or electronics.
The tertiary sector provides services rather than physical products. This is the largest sector in many developed countries and includes retail, banking, education, tourism, and entertainment. Some economists also talk about the quaternary sector, which focuses on information and knowledge-based services such as IT and research. As a Year 7 student, you only need to know the main three for now. You will notice that many products you use every day have travelled through all three sectors!
10. Introduction to Marketing: The 4Ps | 营销入门:4P 理论
Marketing is not just about advertising; it is the whole process of understanding customer needs and then designing, pricing, promoting, and distributing a product to satisfy those needs profitably. A famous framework called the marketing mix helps us remember the four key areas: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. These are often called the 4Ps.
Product refers to what you are selling, including its design, features, quality, and packaging. Price is how much customers pay, which must cover costs and attract buyers. Place involves where and how the product is sold, such as through a physical shop or online. Promotion covers all the ways a business communicates with customers, from social media posts to television adverts. Getting the mix right is a huge part of business success.
