1. Basic Elements of Drama |

Every dramatic piece is constructed from several key elements. The main elements include character, plot, theme, dialogue, music/sound, spectacle, and conflict. Understanding these helps performers and audiences grasp the meaning of a play.

Character refers to the people (or animals/beings) in the story. The plot is the sequence of events that unfold. Theme is the underlying message or central idea of the play, such as friendship or betrayal.

Conflict drives the story forward by creating tension between characters, or between a character and a larger force. Dialogue provides the spoken words, while music and sound effects enhance the atmosphere. Spectacle refers to the visual elements like costumes, set, and lighting.

2. Characterisation Techniques |

Creating a believable character requires attention to physical and vocal choices. You need to think about the character’s background, personality, emotions, and motivations. Always ask: ‘What does my character want in this scene?’

Physicality includes your posture, gestures, facial expressions, and the way you move. For instance, an old person might move slowly with a stooped back, while a confident leader stands tall with open gestures.

Voice plays an equally important role: pitch, pace, volume, and tone all help to define the character’s age, status, and emotional state. Using a high-pitched, fast voice may suggest nervousness, while a low, slow voice can convey authority or sadness.

3. Vocal Skills for Performance |

Actor’s use a range of vocal skills to bring their characters to life and to communicate meaning to the audience. It is important to practise and control these elements.
