📚 Year 7 CIE Drama: Summer Prep and Bridging Course | Year 7 CIE

Starting your CIE Drama journey in Year 7 is an exciting step into a world of creativity, communication, and collaboration. This summer bridging course is designed to give you a confident head start before your first term begins. You will discover what makes drama a unique subject and how you can prepare through playful yet purposeful activities at home.

1. What Is Drama? |

Drama is the art of telling stories through action, voice, and space. It is not just about acting on a stage; it is a way to explore human experiences, feelings, and ideas by stepping into someone else’s shoes. In CIE Drama, you will learn to use your body, voice, and imagination to create and perform pieces that communicate meaning to an audience.

2. The CIE Year 7 Drama Curriculum at a Glance | CIE Year 7 戏剧课程概览

The CIE Drama programme for Year 7 focuses on building foundational skills in three key areas: devising original work, performing scripted plays, and reflecting on drama. You will work both individually and in groups, learning to trust your instincts and respect the ideas of others. The curriculum is practical, so expect to spend most of your time on your feet, not sitting at a desk.

3. The Key Skills You Will Develop |

Drama helps you develop performance skills such as vocal projection, physical control, and facial expression. But it also sharpens life skills: active listening, empathy, problem‑solving, and the courage to speak in front of others. These transferable abilities will support your learning across all subjects and boost your confidence in everyday life.

4. Understanding the Actor’s Toolkit: Body |

Your body is your primary instrument in drama. Gesture, posture, levels, and pace of movement all tell a story before you even speak a word. Over the summer, practise freezing like a statue to represent different emotions (joy, fear, surprise) and observe how people move in real life – at the park, in a supermarket, or on the bus.

Body Element What It Communicates
Slow, heavy steps Sadness or tiredness
Quick, light steps Excitement or eagerness
Closed, hunched posture Insecurity or coldness
Open, upright posture Confidence or authority

5. Understanding the Actor’s Toolkit: Voice |

Voice brings a character to life. In Year 7 you will explore pitch (high and low), pace (fast and slow), volume (loud and soft), and tone (the emotional quality of your sound). Try reading a short story aloud in different voices – an old wizard, a cheeky squirrel, or a nervous child. Record yourself and listen back; you will be surprised by how much the voice can change meaning.

6. Concentration and Control Games |

Many drama warm‑ups are simple games you can play with family or friends. For example, the ‘Mirror’ game: stand facing a partner; one person moves slowly while the other copies exactly, like a reflection. Switch roles after two minutes. This sharpens observation, trust, and physical awareness – skills vital for working in a drama ensemble.

7. Introduction to Devising: Creating Stories from Scratch |

Devising means making up a piece of drama without a ready‑made script. You might start from a picture, a piece of music, or a single word like ‘escape’. In summer, collect five interesting images from magazines or online and for each one ask: who are the people in this image? What just happened? What might happen next? These simple questions are the seeds of devising.

8. Building a Character: The 5 Ws | 塑造角色:五个 W

When you act, you must understand your character from the inside. Use the five Ws: Who are you? Where are you? When is it? What do you want? Why do you want it? Create a character card for a person you invent – give them a name, an age, a secret. The more specific you are, the more truthful your performance will feel.

9. The Performance Space and Stage Areas |

Even if you are rehearsing at home, it helps to think about the space. In CIE Drama you will work in different stage configurations: proscenium arch, thrust, and traverse. For now, just practise using a clear area floor marked into nine squares: upstage right, upstage centre, upstage left, centre right, centre, centre left, downstage right, downstage centre, downstage left. Moving between these squares with purpose adds meaning to a scene.

(U=Upstage, C=Centre, D=Downstage; R=Right, L=Left)

10. Responding to Drama: Simple Evaluation |

Reflection is a huge part of CIE Drama. After any performance or exercise, ask yourself three things: What went well? What could be even better? What did I learn about drama today? Write a few sentences in a drama journal. This habit will sharpen your critical eye and help you improve faster.

11. A Typical Year 7 Drama Lesson Structure | Year 7 戏剧课典型结构

A common lesson pattern will help you settle in quickly. Most sessions begin with a warm‑up game, followed by a skill‑focus activity (voice, movement, or improvisation), then move into group devising or script work, and finish with a sharing and feedback circle. Knowing this rhythm reduces nerves and lets you enjoy the creative process.

12. Your Summer Drama Challenge: A 7‑Day Plan |

Here is a simple, low‑pressure challenge you can do during the final week of the holiday. Day 1: Choose a short poem and read it with three different ‘emotion filters’ (angry, excited, sleepy). Day 2: Create a character card. Day 3: Practise the Mirror game with a sibling. Day 4: Devise a 30‑second silent story using only gesture and expression. Day 5: Try voice warm‑ups (humming, tongue twisters). Day 6: Perform your silent story and ask for two words of feedback. Day 7: Write a short journal entry about what you discovered. This gentle introduction will make your first drama class feel familiar and fun.
