1. What is History? |

History is the study of past events, people and societies. It is not just a collection of dates and names; historians investigate why things happened, how people lived and what consequences followed. By examining evidence from the past, we can understand how our world has been shaped and learn lessons for the future.

Historians work like detectives. They gather clues from the remains of the past – documents, buildings, artefacts and oral traditions – and piece together a narrative. The key skill is interpretation: different historians may arrive at different conclusions from the same evidence, so we must always question sources and consider multiple perspectives.

2. Chronology and Timelines |

Chronology is the arrangement of events in the order they happened. Understanding chronology helps us see cause and effect, and how one event leads to another. We use timelines to display historical periods, often marking years as BC (Before Christ) or AD (Anno Domini), also referred to as BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era).

Centuries are counted in groups of 100 years. The 1st century AD spans from 1 to 100 AD, so the 5th century is 401–500 AD. When working with BC dates, remember that larger numbers mean earlier times: 500 BC is long before 200 BC. Correct use of chronology helps us place civilisations like Ancient Rome (c. 753 BC – 476 AD) and the Middle Ages (c. 500 – 1500 AD) in a clear sequence.

3. Primary and Secondary Sources |

A primary source is a piece of evidence that comes directly from the time being studied. Examples include diaries, letters, photographs, official records, pottery and buildings. These sources provide a first-hand account and allow us to get close to the voices of the past.

A secondary source is created after the event, often by historians who have studied primary sources. Textbooks, encyclopaedia articles, documentaries and biographies are secondary sources. They interpret and analyse primary evidence, so it is important to check their reliability and potential bias. When evaluating any source, historians ask questions about its origin, purpose, content and limitations.

4. The Roman Republic and Empire |

According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC. It began as a small city-state and developed into a republic around 509 BC, governed by elected officials, senators and assemblies. Over centuries, Rome expanded through conquest across Italy and the Mediterranean, defeating Carthage in the Punic Wars and gaining control of vast territories.

Internal conflicts and power struggles led to the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC, and after a period of civil war, Octavian (later Augustus) became the first emperor in 27 BC. The Roman Empire brought peace (Pax Romana) and centralised administration but also relied on military strength and slave labour. The empire eventually split into Western and Eastern halves, and the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD.

5. Life in the Roman Empire |

Roman cities were centres of trade, politics and entertainment. Famous public buildings included bathhouses, amphitheatres (such as the Colosseum), temples and forums. The Romans were skilled engineers, constructing aqueducts to supply water and an extensive network of roads that connected the empire and enabled quick movement of troops and goods.

Society was highly stratified, with a small wealthy elite, a larger group of citizens (plebeians), freedmen and slaves at the bottom. Family life was patriarchal, but women could manage households and, in some periods, own property. Religion ranged from worshipping the traditional Roman gods to the later adoption of Christianity, which was legalised by Emperor Constantine in 313 AD and later became the official religion.

6. The Middle Ages and Feudalism |

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Europe entered the Middle Ages (c. 500–1500 AD). This period is often characterised by feudalism, a system of landholding and loyalty. In theory, the king granted land (fiefs) to powerful nobles in return for military service and advice. Nobles then granted land to knights, who promised protection, while peasants (serfs) worked the land and gave a portion of their produce to their lord.

The manor was the heart of medieval rural life. Each manor aimed to be self-sufficient, with fields, a mill, a church and the lord’s house. Life was hard for most peasants; they lived in simple huts, faced famine and disease, and had few rights. The Church was immensely powerful, influencing every aspect of daily life, education and politics.

7. The Norman Conquest of England |

In 1066, Edward the Confessor, king of England, died without a clear heir. Three men claimed the throne: Harold Godwinson (an English earl), William, Duke of Normandy, and Harald Hardrada, the Viking king of Norway. Harold was crowned king, but both William and Hardrada prepared invasions.

Harold first defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in September. Then he marched south to face William at Hastings. The Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066 ended with Harold’s death and a Norman victory. William was crowned king on Christmas Day. To control England, he built castles, introduced the feudal system and ordered the Domesday Book (1086), a detailed survey of land and property used for taxation.

8. The Crusades: Motivations and Impact |

The Crusades were a series of religious wars launched by Christian Europe between the 11th and 13th centuries. The main stated goal was to recapture Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim control. Pope Urban II called for the First Crusade in 1095, promising spiritual rewards (indulgences) for those who took part.

Many crusaders were driven by a mix of religious devotion, desire for adventure and the hope of gaining land and wealth. The First Crusade (1096–99) succeeded in capturing Jerusalem and established several Crusader states. However, later crusades were less successful, and Jerusalem was eventually lost. The Crusades had lasting effects: they increased contact between Europe and the Islamic world, stimulated trade and exchange of ideas, but also deepened religious intolerance and violence.

9. The Islamic Golden Age |

The Islamic Golden Age (c. 8th to 13th centuries) was a period of remarkable cultural, scientific and economic flourishing in the Islamic world. Centred on the Abbasid Caliphate with its capital in Baghdad, scholarship was encouraged, and scholars translated and preserved ancient Greek, Persian and Indian texts.

Major advances were made in mathematics (algebra, the concept of zero), medicine (hospitals, surgical instruments), astronomy (astrolabes, observatories) and geography. Figures like Al-Khwarizmi, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Al-Razi made lasting contributions. The arts flourished with calligraphy, geometric design and architecture such as the magnificent mosque at Córdoba. Trade routes connected the Islamic world with Africa, Europe and Asia, spreading both goods and knowledge.

10. The Black Death and Its Consequences |

The Black Death was a devastating pandemic that swept through Europe and Asia in the mid-14th century. It reached England in 1348 and killed between a third and half of the population within a few years. The disease is believed to have been bubonic plague, spread by fleas on rats and through the air in its pneumonic form.

Symptoms included fever, painful swellings (buboes) and dark patches on the skin. Medieval people did not understand germ theory, so they blamed bad air, divine punishment or minority groups. The massive loss of life had profound effects: labour shortages strengthened the bargaining power of surviving peasants, weakening the feudal system. Serfdom declined, wages rose and society gradually transformed, paving the way for the later Renaissance and modern Europe.
