1. The Causation Formula: Cause + Trigger = Event |

In history, few events happen without underlying causes and an immediate trigger. The Causation Formula helps you structure exam answers: Long-term causes (political, social, economic) plus a short-term trigger combine to produce a historical event.

For example, the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 can be expressed as: (Edward the Confessor’s death without a clear heir + Harold Godwinson’s coronation + William of Normandy’s claim) + (Harold’s army weakened at Stamford Bridge) → Battle of Hastings.

You can use this template for any major event: the Peasants’ Revolt, the murder of Thomas Becket, or the signing of Magna Carta.

2. The Empire Stability Theorem: Strong Rule × Efficient Bureaucracy + Military – Invasions = Stability |

The Roman Empire at its height demonstrated this theorem. A capable emperor like Augustus reformed the tax system, built roads, and maintained a professional army. These factors multiplied together to create lasting peace, the Pax Romana.

When any variable weakens—such as when later emperors became corrupt or the army could not repel Germanic invasions—the empire’s stability collapsed. In Year 7, you will see how this theorem also applies to medieval kingdoms: a strong monarch like William the Conqueror (strong rule + Domesday Book bureaucracy + feudal military) = control over England.

3. The Feudal Pyramid Formula: Land → Loyalty and Service |

The feudal system can be summarised by a simple chain: the king granted land (fiefs) to his tenants-in-chief (barons and bishops), who in return provided knights and loyalty. The barons then granted smaller fiefs to knights, and knights to peasants. This exchange—land for military service and labour—held medieval society together.

Formula: King → (land + protection) → Tenants-in-chief → (land) → Knights → (land) → Peasants (villeins). Peasants provided labour, food and service upward. Breaking this mutual obligation, such as when a lord demanded excessive taxes, could lead to unrest—setting the stage for the Peasants’ Revolt.

4. The Castle Defence Equation: Strong Walls + Moat + High Ground > Siege Weapons |

Motte-and-bailey castles and later stone keep castles embodied a defensive formula. Builders chose high ground for visibility and drainage. Thick stone walls resisted battering rams, while a deep moat prevented miners and siege towers from reaching the base.

On the attack side, the equation reversed: trebuchets + undermining + starvation blockade > castle defence. Siege engineers constantly sought to outflank this formula. The evolution from square keeps to round towers was a direct response to mining—round towers deflected projectiles better and had no blind corners.

5. The Black Death Demographic Theorem: Plague → Population Decline → Labour Shortage → Wage Rise → Social Upheaval |

The Black Death (1348–1349) killed roughly one-third of England’s population. According to our theorem, this sudden population crash created an acute labour shortage. Surviving peasants could demand higher wages and move to better-paying lords. The government’s response—the Statute of Labourers (1351)—attempted to freeze wages, which angered the poor and contributed to the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.

In the long term, this demographic shock accelerated the end of feudalism. Lords began to commute labour services to money rents, and the old bonds of serfdom loosened. Thus: Plague → Demographic Collapse → Labour Scarcity → Higher Wages and Freedom → Decline of Serfdom.

6. The Rebellion Risk Formula: High Taxes + Unpopular Monarch – Consultation = Rebellion |

King John (1199–1216) is the classic case study of this formula. John imposed high taxes (scutage and tallage) to fund unsuccessful wars in France, refused to consult his barons, and abused feudal privileges. This led directly to the baronial rebellion and the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215.

Magna Carta was essentially a peace treaty that rebalanced the formula: it limited the king’s power to tax without consent and guaranteed the right to fair trial. Subsequent monarchs who ignored this “consultation” variable, such as Charles I, faced renewed rebellions.

7. The Succession Turmoil Theorem: No Clear Heir + Multiple Ambitious Claimants = Civil War |

The death of Edward the Confessor in 1066 triggered a succession crisis exactly matching this theorem. Edward had no direct heir, leaving four main claimants: Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy, Harald Hardrada, and Edgar Atheling. The resulting conflict culminated in two major battles—Stamford Bridge and Hastings.

Similarly, the Anarchy (1135–1153) during the reign of Stephen and Matilda was a prolonged civil war born from Henry I’s failure to secure the succession. The theorem reminds students to always assess the ‘heir’ variable when studying medieval power struggles.

8. The Religious Change Theorem: Monarch’s Personal Belief + Political Necessity = Religious Transformation |

Henry VIII’s break with the Roman Catholic Church in the 1530s can be distilled by this theorem. Henry’s personal desire for a male heir (and his infatuation with Anne Boleyn) combined with the political need to control the Church’s wealth and authority in England. The result was the Act of Supremacy (1534) and the establishment of the Church of England.

The dissolution of the monasteries further illustrates the formula: political need (money for the Crown) + royal authority → closure and confiscation of monastic lands. This theorem also helps explain later swings between Catholicism and Protestantism under Mary I and Elizabeth I, where the monarch’s belief and political calculation shaped the national faith.

9. The Crusader Motivation Formula: Religious Zeal + Land Opportunity + Papal Indulgence = Taking the Cross |

Pope Urban II’s call for the First Crusade in 1095 triggered a massive response. Why? The formula shows that crusaders were motivated by a mixture of genuine desire to free Jerusalem from Muslim rule, the chance to gain land and wealth in the East, and the promise of remission of sins (indulgence).

For younger sons of nobles who would not inherit, the formula offered a spiritual and material escape: Faith + No Inheritance + Adventure = Crusader. The outcome, however, often deviated from the ideals, as seen in the sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade.
