1. What is Sociology? |
Sociology is the systematic study of society, social relationships and institutions. It examines how people interact in groups of all sizes — from families and peer groups to schools and entire nations. Sociologists look for patterns in behaviour, analyse social structures and explore the norms that guide everyday life.
The subject asks questions such as: Why do we obey rules? How does our family background affect our chances in life? What makes cultures different from one another? Sociology encourages us to think critically about the world and to see the connections between personal troubles and wider social issues.
2. Socialisation | 社会化
Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values and behaviours expected in their society. It shapes our identity, language, manners and beliefs. Through socialisation, we become functioning members of our culture and learn what is considered ‘normal’.
Sociologists distinguish between primary socialisation, which occurs in early childhood mainly within the family, and secondary socialisation, which takes place later through institutions like schools, peer groups, the media and workplaces. Primary socialisation teaches basic skills such as walking, talking and understanding emotions, while secondary socialisation introduces more complex social rules and roles.
Agents of socialisation are the individuals, groups and institutions that shape our development. The key agents include family, education, religion, peer groups and mass media.
3. Culture | 文化
Culture refers to the whole way of life of a particular group or society. It includes both material elements — such as clothing, food, technology and art — and non‑material elements, like language, beliefs, values and customs. Culture is learned, not inherited biologically; we acquire it through socialisation.
Cultures vary enormously across the world. One society might value individualism and competition, while another emphasises community and cooperation. Cultural diversity means that behaviours considered normal in one place may be seen as strange in another. Sociologists avoid ethnocentrism — judging other cultures by the standards of one’s own — and instead adopt cultural relativism, trying to understand practices in their own context.
4. Identity | 身份
Identity is our sense of who we are as individuals and as members of social groups. It is shaped by a range of factors including gender, ethnicity, social class, age, nationality and disability. Identity can be personal (the unique characteristics that make you ‘you’) and social (the labels attached to the groups you belong to).
People often hold multiple identities at the same time. For example, a Year 7 student may also be a daughter, a musician, a friend and a member of a religious community. Identities can change over time as circumstances change, and sociologists are interested in how identities are negotiated and expressed.
5. Key Concepts: Norms and Values |
Norms are the unwritten rules that govern behaviour in a society. They tell us what is expected in different situations — for example, facing the front in a lift, queuing in a shop, or wearing a uniform to school. When norms are broken, people may experience informal sanctions such as staring, frowning or gossip.
Values are the deeply held ideas about what is good, right and important. They provide the justification for norms. For instance, the value of respect for authority leads to norms like standing up when a teacher enters the room. Values differ across cultures and can sometimes lead to conflict when different value systems meet.
6. Roles and Status |
A social role is the set of behaviours expected of someone who occupies a particular position. For example, the role of a student includes attending lessons, completing homework and respecting teachers. The role of a parent includes providing care, setting boundaries and offering emotional support.
Status refers to the level of social prestige attached to a position. It can be ascribed — assigned at birth or involuntarily, such as being a prince or a teenager — or achieved, earned through effort and talent, like becoming a professional athlete. Sometimes people experience role conflict, when the demands of two roles clash (for instance, a student who is also a carer at home may find it hard to meet deadlines).
7. Family | 家庭
The family is a primary social institution and a key agent of socialisation. Families differ in structure and function across
