1. Character Building Formula |
Character = Motivation + Physicality + Voice
A fully realised character does not appear by chance. You build one by deciding what they want (motivation), how they use their body (physicality) and how they sound (voice). Start by asking ‘What does my character want in this scene?’ That desire drives everything – the way they stand, move, gesture and speak. If a character is desperate to be believed, their body might lean forward, hands might grasp at the air, and their voice might crack with urgency. Always link physical choices and vocal choices back to that central motivation, and you will create a character who feels truthful and engaging.
2. Vocal Expression Formula |
Vocal Expression = Projection + Articulation + Pace + Pitch + Tone
Your voice is one of the most flexible tools you have on stage. Projection means using enough breath and volume so that the audience can hear every word, whether you are whispering or shouting. Articulation is the crisp, clear delivery of consonants and vowels; it prevents your words from becoming a mumble. Pace is the speed of your speech – fast can show excitement or panic, slow can suggest thoughtfulness or sadness. Pitch refers to how high or low your voice sounds, and tone is the emotional colouring: warm, cold, sarcastic, joyful. Experiment with mixing these five ingredients to change the mood of a single line.
3. Physicality Formula |
Physicality = Posture + Gesture + Facial Expression + Movement
What your body does on stage tells the audience as much as your words do. Posture is how you hold your spine and balance your weight: a slouched posture can suggest tiredness or low status, while an upright, open chest can radiate confidence. Gestures are movements of the hands and arms that emphasise or replace speech, such as pointing, waving or clenching a fist. Facial expression communicates emotion instantly – raised eyebrows, a tight jaw or a wide smile. Movement includes how you walk, turn and use the stage space. Build your physicality by rehearsing in front of a mirror, and keep your choices consistent with your character’s motivation.
4. Stage Positions Quick Reference |
Understanding stage directions is crucial for following a script and for blocking scenes. Remember that ‘stage left’ and ‘stage right’ are from the actor’s perspective when facing the audience. ‘Upstage’ means away from the audience, and ‘downstage’ means closer to the audience. Use the table below to memorise the nine key acting areas.
| Upstage Right (UR) |
| Upstage Centre (UC) |
| Upstage Left (UL) |
| Centre Right (CR) |
| Centre Stage (CS) |
| Centre Left (CL) |
| Downstage Right (DR) |
| Downstage Centre (DC) |
| Downstage Left (DL) |
When blocking a scene, try placing high-status characters downstage centre to command focus, or use upstage areas to make a character appear distant or secretive. Consistent use of stage positions helps the audience follow the story clearly.
5. Space and Levels Formula |
Spatial Impact = Proxemics + Levels + Grouping
The way you arrange actors in space, how close they stand to one another and the height at which they perform all contribute to the meaning of a scene. Proxemics is the study of personal space and distance: close proximity can show intimacy or threat, while a wide gap can suggest isolation or conflict. Levels refer to the use of different heights – standing, sitting, kneeling or lying down – to communicate power; for example, a character standing over a seated figure usually appears dominant. Grouping means how actors cluster together; tight groups can feel like a team or a mob, while scattered spacing can indicate loneliness or chaos.
6. Story Structure Formula |
Narrative = Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Resolution
Even when devising a short piece of drama, understanding narrative structure helps you shape it into a satisfying journey. The exposition introduces characters, setting and the initial situation. Rising action builds tension through a series of events or conflicts that complicate the story. The climax is the moment of highest tension or the turning point where the main confrontation occurs. Falling action deals with the consequences of the climax, and the resolution brings the story to a close, showing how characters have changed or what new balance has been achieved. Use this arc to check that your devised scene has a clear beginning, a gripping middle and a meaningful end.
7. Tension and Conflict Formula |
Tension = Conflict + Uncertainty
Drama thrives on tension – that feeling of anticipation that keeps the audience leaning forward. Conflict can be between characters (a disagreement or fight), within a character (a moral dilemma) or between a character and their environment (societal pressure). Uncertainty is the audience’s question: ‘What will happen next?’ You build tension by giving characters opposing wants and by delaying the outcome. Use pauses, eye contact, the threat of violence or unexpected revelations to make the audience hold their breath. Remember, tension is not just about shouting; a quiet scene can be intensely tense when the stakes are high and the future is uncertain.
8. Improvisation Formula |
Improvisation = Spontaneity + ‘Yes, And’
When you improvise, you create drama on the spot without a script. The core rule is ‘Yes, And’ – accept whatever your partner offers and build on it. If a partner says, ‘Look, a dragon is flying towards us,’ you respond not by denying it but by adding detail: ‘Quick, hand me the enchanted shield!’ This keeps the story moving forward. Spontaneity means trusting your instincts and not over-planning in your head. Good improvisation relies on listening carefully, making eye contact, and committing fully to the imagined world. Use improvisation to generate ideas for devised pieces or to explore a character’s reactions.
9. Emotion Through Action Formula |
Emotion = Physical Action + Imagination
In performance, you cannot simply feel an emotion and expect the audience to see it. You must translate feeling into visible action. The Russian theatre practitioner Stanislavski encouraged actors to recall physical actions associated with an emotion. If your character is sad, try slowing your breathing, dropping your gaze, and moving with heavy limbs. Imagination helps you connect to the character’s circumstances: ask yourself ‘What would I do if I were truly in this situation?’ Use simple physical actions – wringing hands for anxiety, standing rigid for shock, bouncing on toes for excitement – and the audience will read the emotion clearly.
10. Ensemble Work Formula |
Ensemble = Listening + Reacting + Sharing Focus
Drama is rarely a solo effort. An ensemble performs best when everyone listens not just with ears but with eyes and body, staying aware of each other’s rhythms. Reacting means responding truthfully to what your scene partners do, rather than waiting for your next line; a genuine reaction keeps the scene alive. Sharing focus involves making sure no one unfairly dominates the stage unless the scene demands it. Use techniques like giving and taking attention through eye contact, balancing stage positions, and supporting moments when another character has a key revelation. A strong ensemble creates a performance far greater than the sum of its parts.
