1. What is History? |

History is the study of the past based on evidence left behind. Historians ask questions, examine sources and construct interpretations of what happened and why.

Primary sources are original records created at the time under study, such as diaries, letters, artefacts, photographs and official documents. Secondary sources are accounts produced later, like textbooks, articles and documentaries, which analyse and interpret primary evidence.

When using a source, historians check its reliability by considering who made it, why it was made, and whether it is biased. Chronology means putting events in the correct time order using dates. We often use BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini) to label years.

我们常使用BC(公元前)和AD(公元)来标记年份。

Shows a contemporary view of events
Secondary 二手史料 A modern textbook 现代教科书 Provides overview and analysis 提供概述与分析

2. 1066: The Battle for the Crown | 1066

In January 1066, King Edward the Confessor died without leaving an obvious heir. Three main contenders claimed the English throne: Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex; William, Duke of Normandy; and Harald Hardrada, King of Norway.

Harold Godwinson was chosen as king by the English nobles (the Witan), but both William and Hardrada prepared invasions. Hardrada landed in the north and was joined by Harold’s brother Tostig. King Harold marched north and defeated them at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066.

While Harold was in the north, William’s Norman fleet landed at Pevensey on the south coast. Harold had to march his exhausted army south to face the new threat.

3. The Battle of Hastings and the Bayeux Tapestry |

The Battle of Hastings took place on 14 October 1066. Harold’s English army formed a shield wall on Senlac Hill. William’s army used archers, infantry and cavalry. After hours of fighting, the Normans pretended to retreat, drawing some English soldiers from the shield wall, then turned and attacked.

Harold was killed — according to the Bayeux Tapestry, he was struck in the eye by an arrow. William then became known as William the Conqueror, and was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066.

The Bayeux Tapestry is a primary source, an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres long, telling the story of the Norman invasion. It allows historians to study eleventh-century armour, weapons, ships and beliefs, but it also presents the Norman version of events.

4. The Feudal System |

To control England, William introduced the feudal system, a way of organising society based on land ownership and loyalty. The king owned all the land and granted it to his most trusted nobles, the barons, in return for military service and taxes.

Barons granted land to knights, who provided protection and fought for the baron. Knights in turn gave land to peasants (villeins), who worked on the land and provided food. This created a strict hierarchy: King → Barons → Knights → Peasants.

The Domesday Book was a great survey ordered by William in 1086 to record who owned what, how many animals and people there were, and how much everything was worth. It helped the king raise taxes efficiently and maintain control.

5. Life in a Medieval Village |

Most people in medieval England lived in villages and worked as peasants on a lord’s manor. The land was divided into large open fields, often farmed using the three-field system: one field for winter crops, one for spring crops, and one left fallow (unplanted) to rest the soil.

Peasants owed the lord labour services (working on his land several days a week), a share of their own crops, and had to use the lord’s mill and bakery, paying for the service. In return, they received a small plot of land to grow food for their families and protection in times of trouble.

Houses were simple, made of wattle and daub (wooden frames covered with a mixture of mud, straw and dung), with thatched roofs and earthen floors. Entire families often shared a single room, and animals might be kept indoors in winter.

6. Medieval Towns and Trade |

Towns began to grow after the Norman Conquest because trade increased and more artisans were needed. Towns were typically built around a marketplace and a church, and they had narrow, winding streets. London, York and Norwich became important centres.

Craftspeople such as blacksmiths, carpenters, bakers and weavers formed guilds — organisations that controlled training, set quality standards and protected members’ interests. Becoming a guild master involved starting as an apprentice, then becoming a journeyman, and finally producing a masterpiece.

Sanitation was poor: rubbish and waste were thrown into the streets, which attracted rats and helped diseases spread. Towns were very crowded, and fires were a constant danger because most buildings were wooden.

7. The Power of the Church |

The medieval Christian Church was at the centre of everyone’s life. It taught that after death, people would go to Heaven or Hell, and everyone was expected to follow its rules. The Pope in Rome was the head of the entire Western Church, and archbishops, bishops and priests held great authority.

Parish churches served the local community, providing baptisms, marriages and funerals, and the village priest was often the only educated person. Monasteries and abbeys were centres of learning, where monks copied manuscripts and preserved knowledge.

People paid a tithe — one tenth of their earnings or produce — to the Church. The Church also owned vast lands, making it extremely wealthy and politically powerful. It could even overrule kings if they disobeyed Church law.

8. Henry II and Thomas Becket |

Henry II became king in 1154 and wanted to strengthen royal control over the Church. He appointed his friend Thomas Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury, hoping Becket would support his reforms. Instead, Becket defended the Church’s rights and clashed with the king over the trial of churchmen in royal courts.

The conflict escalated, and in a moment of anger Henry is said to have exclaimed, ‘Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?’ Four knights interpreted this as an order and murdered Becket inside Canterbury Cathedral in 1170.

The murder shocked Europe. Becket was made a saint, and Canterbury became a major pilgrimage site. Henry had to do public penance to restore his reputation, showing that even the king could not simply ignore the Church’s power.

9. King John and Magna Carta |

King John, who reigned from 1199 to 1216, is often remembered as a failure. He lost most of England’s lands in France, quarrelled with the Pope, and imposed heavy taxes on his barons to pay for his failed wars.

In 1215 the rebellious barons forced King John to meet them at Runnymede and agree to a document known as Magna Carta (the Great Charter). This document set limits on royal power: the king could not demand taxes without consulting his barons, and no free man could be imprisoned or punished without a fair trial.

Though John quickly ignored Magna Carta and it did not bring immediate peace, its principles became hugely important in later centuries, influencing ideas about justice, liberty and the rule of law.

10. The Black Death |

In 1348–1349 the Black Death, a devastating plague, swept through England and Europe. It was spread by fleas living on black rats and arrived on merchant ships. The disease killed roughly one third to one half of the population of England within two years.

Medieval people did not understand what caused the plague. Some believed it was a punishment from God, while others blamed bad air or minority groups. Treatments, such as bleeding or using herbs, were largely ineffective.

The Black Death had huge consequences: with fewer workers available, peasants could demand higher wages and better conditions. The old feudal system began to break down as lords struggled to find labour. This shift in power paved the way for the Peasants’ Revolt.

11. The Peasants’ Revolt |

In 1381 a major uprising known as the Peasants’ Revolt broke out in England. The immediate cause was a new tax, the Poll Tax, which demanded the same amount from every adult regardless of their wealth. Combined with wage restrictions and the desire for freedom, anger boiled over.

Rebels from Kent and Essex, led by Wat Tyler, marched on London. They burned documents, destroyed buildings belonging to officials, and even entered the Tower of London. The young King Richard II met them and appeared to agree to their demands, which included the abolition of serfdom and lower rents.

However, during a second meeting, Wat Tyler was killed, and the king persuaded the rebels to go home by promising change. These promises were quickly broken, and the revolt was crushed. Yet it showed that ordinary people could challenge authority, and lords became more cautious in their treatment of peasants.

12. Review of Medieval Change |

The period from 1066 to the late fourteenth century saw enormous change in England: a new Norman ruling class, the feudal system, the growth of towns, struggles between kings and the Church, and the devastation of the Black Death. Each of these events shaped the way power, land and daily life were organised.

By the end of the Peasants’ Revolt, the rigid feudal hierarchy had been seriously weakened. The monarch’s power was also gradually limited, as shown by Magna Carta. Understanding these key events and the connections between them is essential for mastering Year 7 OCR History.
