The winter break offers a brilliant chance for Year 7 students following the OCR course to consolidate their understanding of medieval and early modern British history. Without the pressure of daily lessons, you can step back, organise your notes, and build a secure foundation in topics such as the Norman Conquest, life in the Middle Ages, the Black Death and the Tudor religious changes. This intensive revision plan blends content review with skill practice, helping you return to school feeling confident and well prepared.

1. Setting Goals and Organising Your Revision |

Before diving into any topic, it is essential to set clear, achievable goals for your winter break history revision. Begin by listing the main units you have covered so far in Year 7, such as ‘Medieval Realms 1066–1500’ and ‘The Making of the United Kingdom, 1500–1750’. Then, use a simple calendar to block out 30–45 minute revision slots each day, mixing high-focus tasks like timeline building with lighter activities like watching a short documentary.

Write down three personal targets for the holiday, such as ‘I will memorise the key dates of the Norman Conquest’ or ‘I can explain two causes of the Peasants’ Revolt’. Keep these targets visible on your desk. This simple act of goal-setting makes your revision purposeful and helps you track progress, reducing the feeling that history is just a pile of disconnected facts.

For the OCR course, you will also need to practise source analysis and extended writing. Therefore, each week of the holiday could have a theme: Week 1 – chronology and key events; Week 2 – explanation and causation; Week 3 – source work and essay planning. A clear structure prevents last-minute panic and turns revision into a manageable daily habit.

2. Mapping the Story of Medieval Britain: Chronology First | 勾勒中世纪英国历史脉络:时间线先行

A strong sense of chronology is the backbone of historical understanding. Start your revision by creating a large, colourful timeline that stretches from the Battle of Hastings in 1066 to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. Mark on it all the major events you have studied: the Norman Conquest, the signing of Magna Carta (1215), the arrival of the Black Death (1348), the Peasants’ Revolt (1381), the Battle of Bosworth (1485) and Henry VIII’s break with Rome (1534).

As you add each event to the timeline, write one sentence on a sticky note explaining why it was significant. For example, next to ‘Battle of Hastings’ write: ‘William the Conqueror defeated Harold Godwinson, beginning Norman rule in England and transforming land ownership.’ This active method fixes dates in your memory far better than passive reading.

OCR questions often ask you to describe, explain or analyse change and continuity over time. A personal timeline lets you visualise patterns: how power shifted from kings to barons, how the Church’s influence grew and then collapsed, how the population recovered after the Black Death. Hang the timeline on your wall and refer to it at the start of every revision session – it will ground you in the big story before you zoom into the details.

3. Deep Dive: The Norman Conquest and Its Impact |

The Norman Conquest is a cornerstone of the Year 7 OCR course. Begin by revisiting the three claimants to the English throne in 1066: Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy and Harald Hardrada. Make a simple table listing each claimant’s strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Harold had the advantage of being on the spot and the support of the Witan, but his troops were exhausted after the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

Next, reconstruct the events of 1066 in a flow diagram: the death of Edward the Confessor, the Battle of Fulford, the Battle of Stamford Bridge, William’s landing at Pevensey, and finally the Battle of Hastings. For each stage, ask yourself ‘Why did this happen?’ and ‘What was the result?’ Remember that OCR mark schemes reward clear explanation of cause and consequence, not just storytelling.

William’s victory led to profound changes. You should be able to explain the introduction of the feudal system, the building of motte-and-bailey castles, and the Domesday Book. Create a revision card for each concept. For ‘Feudal System’, draw the hierarchy from king to barons, knights and peasants, and label each layer with the obligations involved, such as knight service or work on the lord’s demesne. For ‘Domesday Book’, practise summing it up in a single sentence: ‘A massive survey of land and wealth in England completed in 1086, which helped William raise taxes and control his new kingdom.’

4. The Feudal System and the Power of the Medieval Church |

Once Norman rule was established, medieval society was shaped by two powerful structures: the feudal system and the Church. To revise feudalism, practise explaining the chain of landholding: the king owned all the land, which he granted to tenants-in-chief in return for loyalty and military service; they in turn sub-let to knights, and peasants worked the land in exchange for protection. Use the key terms ‘homage’, ‘fief’ and ‘knight service’ confidently in your writing.

The Church, however, was not just a place of worship; it was a landowner, a lawmaker and the gatekeeper of salvation. Revise the role of the parish church in everyday life: baptisms, marriages, funerals, holy days and the collection of tithes. Then move to the wider power of the Pope and the monastic system. Draw a mind map linking the Church to education, healing, pilgrimage and political influence. This will help you answer questions such as ‘Explain why the Church was so powerful in medieval England.’

A classic OCR-style enquiry might present a source showing monks copying manuscripts or a doom painting above a church arch. Be ready to infer from such sources what medieval people believed about heaven and hell, and how the Church used art to teach a largely illiterate population. Pair your content knowledge with source inference skills: ‘From this source I learn that…’ and ‘This source suggests to a historian that…’

5. Medieval Life: Village, Town and the Black Death |

To understand the impact of the Black Death, you first need a clear picture of daily life in a medieval village. Revise the layout of a typical village: the manor house, the church, the peasants’ crofts, the three open fields and the common pasture. Create a diagram showing the annual cycle of farming – ploughing, sowing, harvesting and the fallow field. Then explain why most peasants rarely travelled more than a few miles from their birthplace.

Towns were growing, though, and with them came trade, guilds and the terrible sanitary conditions that allowed plague to spread. Build a comparison table with columns for ‘Village Life’ and ‘Town Life’ under headings such as Work, Diet, Housing, Health and Religion. This will help you see continuity and change in a structured way. For OCR, you are often asked to ‘describe the typical features’ of something, so this table becomes a ready-made revision tool.

Now turn to the Black Death of 1348–49. Revise the two forms of the disease – bubonic and pneumonic – but focus more on the consequences than the symptoms. Use a spider diagram to map out the short-term and long-term effects: mass mortality, labour shortages, the Statute of Labourers, the weakening of the feudal system, and a growing sense of questioning authority. Be ready to explain how the Black Death contributed to the Peasants’ Revolt a generation later.

6. The Peasants’ Revolt of 1381: Protest and Power | 1381

The Peasants’ Revolt is a dramatic episode that OCR often uses to test your ability to analyse causation and consequences. Start by learning the four main triggers: the Poll Tax, the impact of the Black Death, failed military campaigns abroad and the inflammatory preaching of John Ball. For each cause, write a short paragraph explaining exactly how it made peasants feel angry and ready to march on London.

Create a storyboard of the revolt’s key events, from the first attacks on tax collectors in Essex to Wat Tyler’s meeting with the young King Richard II at Smithfield. Note the demands the rebels presented and, crucially, why the revolt failed despite its early successes. You could write two contrasting paragraphs: one from the perspective of a hopeful peasant, the other from that of a councillor advising the king on how to crush the rebellion.

Although the revolt was crushed, its legacy is important. The Poll Tax was withdrawn, and lords became more cautious about demanding extra labour services. Some historians argue the revolt showed that peasants were no longer willing to accept serfdom passively. For OCR, you should be able to discuss the significance of the revolt both in the short term and as a turning point. Practise this by writing a paragraph starting: ‘The Peasants’ Revolt was significant because…’

7. The Tudors: Henry VIII and the Break with Rome |

Moving into the Tudor period, a central OCR topic is the English Reformation under Henry VIII. Start with the king’s ‘Great Matter’: his desperation for a male heir and his attempt to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Explain the role of Anne Boleyn, Cardinal Wolsey’s failure, and Thomas Cromwell’s clever solution – break with Rome and make the monarch the Supreme Head of the Church of England.

You must understand not only the personal motives but also the wider religious and political context. Create a cause-and-effect chain: from the rise of Protestant ideas in Europe to the Act of Supremacy (1534) and the Dissolution of the Monasteries (1536–40). Use a flowchart to show how each step led to the next. This technique is excellent for answering OCR explain questions that carry high marks.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries had huge social and economic effects. Monasteries had provided education, healthcare and charity; their closure left gaps that took decades to fill. Revise this topic by designing a ‘before and after’ poster for a typical monastery, showing what it did for the local community and what happened to its buildings and land afterwards. This visual revision helps embed the idea of change and continuity.

8. Religious Rollercoaster: Edward VI and Mary I | 宗教过山车:爱德华六世与玛丽一世

After Henry’s death, England’s official religion swung between extreme Protestantism under Edward VI and a return to Catholicism under Mary I. To revise this period efficiently, build a simple table with three columns: ‘Edward VI (1547–53)’, ‘Mary I (1553–58)’ and ‘Changes for ordinary people’. List key policies such as the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer, the removal of statues, the burning of Protestant martyrs under Mary, and the return of the Pope’s authority.

For OCR, you also need to assess how these rapid changes affected ordinary men and women. Write a diary entry from the viewpoint of a farmer who has to change his church’s furnishings and prayer books twice in a decade. How does he feel? Confused? Fearful? Secretly loyal to the old ways? This empathy exercise not only makes revision more engaging but also prepares you for questions about how people reacted to religious change.

Remember that Mary I’s reign is often judged a failure because she died childless and her Spanish marriage was deeply unpopular. However, some historians argue she laid the administrative groundwork for Elizabeth’s later settlement. Practise writing a balanced paragraph that acknowledges both sides: ‘Mary’s reign was a disaster in the short term because… However, it could be argued that…’

9. Elizabeth I: Settlement, Threats and the Golden Age |

Elizabeth I’s reign is a favourite OCR topic because it combines religion, politics and culture. Begin by unpacking the Elizabethan Religious Settlement of 1559: the Act of Supremacy and the Act of Uniformity. Summarise these in a diagram showing how Elizabeth tried to find a ‘middle way’ between Catholicism and Puritanism. Note how the Settlement allowed the queen to present herself as a moderate ruler while still maintaining firm royal control.

Threats to Elizabeth’s rule, both internal and external, must be revised carefully. Create a risk matrix that rates the severity of each threat: the Northern Rebellion, the Ridolfi Plot, the Throckmorton Plot, the Babington Plot, and above all the Spanish Armada of 1588. For each, note the cause, the key individuals involved and the outcome. Use this to answer questions about why Elizabeth survived so many challenges.

Finally, explore the cultural achievements of the ‘Golden Age’ – Shakespeare, exploration, the flourishing of the theatre and the growth of trade. OCR may ask you to explain why Elizabeth’s reign is called a Golden Age. Prepare a mind map that balances the ‘golden’ elements with the darker realities: poverty, religious persecution and the harsh punishments of the age. This shows a mature historical judgement.

10. Mastering Source Analysis for OCR | 掌握OCR资料分析技巧

OCR exams consistently test your ability to handle historical sources – written, visual or physical. Spend time practising the skill of inference: looking beyond the surface of a source to ask what it suggests about a society’s attitudes or a person’s motives. Use the sentence starters ‘I can infer that…’, ‘This source suggests…’ and ‘The purpose of this source might have been…’ every time you study a piece of evidence.

Another vital skill is evaluating a source’s usefulness and reliability. Remember the acronym ‘NOP’ – Nature, Origin, Purpose. The nature of a source (is it a letter, a chronicle, a cartoon?) shapes what it can tell you. Its origin (who made it and when?) helps you assess bias. Its purpose (to persuade, to inform, to entertain?) affects reliability. Create a revision grid where you apply NOP to several sources from your course, such as an extract from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle or a portrait of Elizabeth I.

Finally, practise comparing two sources about the same event, such as two accounts of the Peasants’ Revolt. Ask: do they agree or contradict each other? Which is more trustworthy and why? Write a short comparative paragraph following the OCR structure: ‘Source A says… while Source B says… The main difference is… I find Source A more reliable because…’

11. Extended Writing: Structuring Strong Historical Essays |

Even in Year 7, OCR expects you to write structured, analytical essays. Begin with the PEEL paragraph model: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. For a question such as ‘Explain why William won the Battle of Hastings’, your Point might be ‘William’s army was better prepared.’ Your Evidence could be ‘The Normans used cavalry and archers effectively, as shown in the Bayeux Tapestry.’ Your Explanation should then unpack why this mattered, and your Link might connect to the next point about luck or leadership.

Build a collection of generic ‘explain’ and ‘analyse’ sentence starters on one revision card: ‘One reason…’, ‘This led to…’, ‘Consequently…’, ‘In the long term…’, ‘This was significant because…’ Having these ready reduces exam panic and ensures your writing flows logically. Practise by choosing one essay question per day and writing just the introduction and first PEEL paragraph.

For longer OCR questions, you also need to include a conclusion that reaches a judgement. Teach yourself to use the phrase ‘Overall, the most important factor was… because…’ This demonstrates that you can weigh up different causes or consequences, a hallmark of higher-level answers. Use a revision session to take a past question, plan a full essay in bullet points, and then check it against a mark scheme.

12. Self-Testing and Final Review: Lock In Your Knowledge |

Passive re-reading gives you a false sense of security. Instead, use active recall techniques to test what you really know. Create a stack of question flashcards – on one side, a question like ‘What was the Domesday Book?’, on the other, a model answer. Shuffle them daily and only put a card back in the pile if you cannot answer it perfectly. This is one of the most powerful revision methods shown by cognitive science.

In the final days of the holiday, conduct a ‘blank page’ test. Choose a major topic, such as ‘The Norman Conquest’, and write down absolutely everything you can remember on a blank sheet of paper without looking at your notes. Then check your notes for gaps and fill them in with a different colour pen. This brutally honest exercise reveals exactly where your weaknesses lie and targets your final revision.

Finally, revisit your initial goals from the beginning of the holiday. Have you achieved them? Ticking them off gives a huge sense of accomplishment. If any target remains unmet, dedicate one final, focused session to it. Enter the new term knowing that you have built a solid framework of historical knowledge and thinking skills – you are truly ready for whatever OCR history throws at you.
