1. Semiotics: Signs and Meaning | 符号学:符号与意义

Semiotics is the study of signs and how they create meaning. In media texts, signs are everywhere – images, words, sounds and more. A sign is made up of two inseparable parts: the signifier (the physical form we perceive) and the signified (the mental concept it triggers).

符号学研究符号及其如何产生意义。在媒体文本中,符号无处不在——图像、文字、声音等。一个符号由不可分割的两部分组成:能指(我们感知的物理形式)和所指(它触发的心理概念)。

Sign = Signifier + Signified

符号 = 能指 + 所指

For example, the written word ‘dog’ is a signifier, and the mental image of a four-legged barking animal is the signified. Together they form the sign ‘dog’. Understanding this formula helps you deconstruct any media message.

例如,写出的单词“dog”是能指,脑中浮现的四条腿吠叫的动物形象是所指。二者结合构成符号“dog”。理解这一公式有助于你解构任何媒体信息。

2. Icon, Index, Symbol | 图标、索引、象征

According to Charles Peirce, signs can be divided into three types based on the relationship between signifier and signified. These categories help us analyse how meaning is created in film, advertising and news.

根据皮尔斯的理论,符号可以根据能指与所指之间的关系分为三种类型。这些分类帮助我们在电影、广告和新闻中分析意义的创造。

An icon is a sign that physically resembles what it represents. Example: a portrait photograph is an icon because it looks like the person.

图标是与其所代表对象外形相似的符号。例如:一张肖像照是图标,因为它看起来像那个人。

An index is a sign that has a direct physical connection or causal link to its object. Example: dark clouds are an index of rain, and smoke is an index of fire.

索引是与其对象有直接物理联系或因果关系的符号。例如:乌云是下雨的索引,烟是火的索引。

A symbol is a sign with no logical connection; its meaning relies entirely on cultural convention. Example: the word ‘cat’ or a red heart shape symbolises love – there is no resemblance, we simply learn the association.

象征是与对象没有逻辑关系、完全依赖文化约定的符号。例如:单词“cat”或红色爱心代表爱——没有相似性,只是我们习得了这种关联。

3. Denotation and Connotation | 外延与内涵

Roland Barthes introduced two levels of meaning in signs. Denotation is the literal, surface-level meaning – what you physically see. Connotation is the deeper, cultural or emotional meaning that society attaches to the sign.

罗兰·巴特提出了符号的两层含义。外延是字面的、表层的含义——你实际看到的东西。内涵则是社会赋予该符号的更深层的文化或情感意义。

Meaning = Denotation + Connotation

意义 = 外延 + 内涵

For example, an image of a rose denotes a red flower. However, its connotation may be romance, passion or even political symbolism. In media analysis, you must spot both layers.

例如,一张玫瑰的图像外延是红色的花朵。然而,其内涵可能是浪漫、激情甚至政治象征。在媒体分析中,你必须同时识别这两个层面。

4. Narrative Theory: Todorov’s Equilibrium | 叙事理论:托多罗夫的平衡公式

Tzvetan Todorov suggested that most narratives follow a five-stage pattern. This formula helps you map the structure of films, TV dramas and even advertisements.

茨维坦·托多罗夫提出,大多数叙事遵循一个五阶段模式。这个公式帮助你勾画出电影、电视剧甚至广告的结构。

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

平衡 → 干扰 → 识别 → 尝试修复 → 新平衡

First, a calm, stable world exists (equilibrium). Then an event disrupts it. The characters recognise the disruption and attempt to solve it. Finally, a new equilibrium is established – often changed from the beginning.

首先,存在一个平静稳定的世界(平衡)。然后某事件将其打破。角色意识到干扰并尝试解决它。最后,建立一个新的平衡——通常与最初不同。

5. Propp’s Character Types | 普罗普的角色类型

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folktales and found seven recurring character roles. Think of these as the ‘elements’ that make up many stories, from fairy tales to Hollywood blockbusters.

弗拉基米尔·普罗普分析了俄罗斯民间故事,发现了七种反复出现的角色类型。可以把它们视为构成许多故事的“元素”,从童话到好莱坞大片。

The Hero is the central figure who goes on a quest, defeats the villain and restores order.

英雄是踏上征程、击败反派并恢复秩序的核心角色。

The Villain opposes the hero and creates conflict. They must be overcome for balance to return.

反派与英雄作对,制造冲突。为了恢复平衡,必须将其击败。

The Princess (or Prize) is what the hero seeks – not necessarily a person; it can be an object or goal.

公主(或奖赏)是英雄所寻求的目标——不一定是人,可以是物品或目标。

The Donor provides the hero with a magical tool or advice to help on the quest.

赠予者为英雄提供魔法工具或建议,以助其完成任务。

The Helper often appears as a sidekick, offering support and friendship throughout the journey.

帮手通常以伙伴身份出现,在整个旅程中提供支持和友谊。

The Dispatcher sends the hero on the mission and sets the narrative in motion.

派发者派遣英雄执行任务,推动叙事开始。

The False Hero initially seems good but later reveals their deception, trying to take credit or mislead.

假英雄起初看似善良,但后来暴露出欺骗,试图抢功或误导。

6. Representation Formula | 表征公式

Representation is how media re-presents the world. It is never simply a ‘mirror’ of reality; it involves choices. Producers select what to show, construct an image, and mediate it through technical codes.

表征是指媒体如何重新呈现世界。它从来不是单纯的现实“镜子”;它涉及各种选择。生产者选择展示什么、构建一个形象,并通过技术符码进行中介。

Representation = Selection + Construction + Mediation

表征 = 选择 + 建构 + 中介

Selection means deciding which people, events or details to include – and which to exclude. Construction is how those elements are arranged using camera, editing, lighting and makeup. Mediation refers to the way the final text is shaped by the institution, audience expectations and technology. Stereotypes often arise when selection oversimplifies a group.

选择是指决定包含哪些人物、事件或细节——以及排除哪些。建构是指如何运用摄影、剪辑、灯光和化妆来安排这些元素。中介指的是最终文本如何受到机构、受众期待和技术的影响。当选择过度简化某个群体时,刻板印象往往就出现了。

7. Camera Shots, Angles & Mise-en-Scene | 镜头、角度与场面调度

Media language includes technical terms for camera work and the visual composition of a scene. The following table gives a quick reference to essential shot types and camera angles used in OCR analysis.

媒体语言包括摄影工作和场景视觉构成的技术术语。下表提供了OCR分析中必备镜头类型与角度的快速参考。

Camera Shot / Angle (EN) 中文名称与功能
Extreme Long Shot (ELS) – Shows a very wide view; often establishes the setting. 极远景 – 展现极广阔视野;常用于建立场景。
Long Shot (LS) – Frames the whole subject from a distance; shows body language and environment. 远景 – 从远处取景全身;展示肢体语言和环境。
Mid Shot (MS) – Typically from the waist up; common for dialogue and character interaction. 中景 – 通常腰部以上;常见于对话和角色互动。
Close-Up (CU) – Frames the face or a specific detail; reveals emotions or highlights objects. 特写 – 取景面部或特定细节;揭示情感或突出重点对象。
Extreme Close-Up (ECU) – Shows only a portion of the face or object; creates intensity or curiosity. 极特写 – 仅展示脸或物体的一小部分;制造紧张感或好奇心。
High Angle – Camera looks down on the subject; makes them appear small or vulnerable. 高角度镜头 – 摄影机俯视拍摄;使对象显得渺小或脆弱。
Low Angle – Camera looks up at the subject; suggests power or dominance. 低角度镜头 – 摄影机仰视拍摄;暗示力量或支配地位。

Mise-en-scene is a French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’. It covers setting, props, costumes, lighting, colour and figure expression. Everything in the frame is there for a reason.

场面调度(Mise-en-scene)是一个法语词,意为“置于场景之中”。它涵盖场景、道具、服装、灯光、色彩和人物表情。画面中的一切都有其存在的理由。

8. Audience Theories: Uses and Gratifications | 受众理论:使用与满足

Instead of asking ‘what media do to people’, the Uses and Gratifications model asks ‘what people do with media’. Audiences are active, choosing media to fulfil needs. The formula below helps you remember the four main categories.

“使用与满足”模型不问“媒体对人们做了什么”,而问“人们用媒体做什么”。受众是主动的,选择媒体来满足需求。下面的公式帮助你记住四个主要类别。

Audience Use = Information + Personal Identity + Social Interaction + Entertainment

受众使用 = 信息 + 个人认同 + 社交互动 + 娱乐

Information: we use media to learn, find news or satisfy curiosity. Personal Identity: media reinforce our values, sense of self and belonging. Social Interaction: we talk about media with friends, use it to connect, or feel part of a community. Entertainment: escapism, relaxation and enjoyment.

信息:我们用媒体学习、获取新闻或满足好奇心。个人认同:媒体强化我们的价值观、自我意识和归属感。社交互动:我们与朋友讨论媒体、用它来联系或感受社群归属。娱乐:逃避现实、放松和享受。

9. Encoding/Decoding Model | 编码/解码模型

Stuart Hall argued that meaning is not simply sent from producer to audience. Instead, producers encode messages, and audiences decode them. The same text can produce different readings based on the audience’s background.

斯图尔特·霍尔认为,意义并非简单地从生产者传递到受众。相反,生产者对信息进行编码,受众则进行解码。同一文本可能根据受众背景产生不同的解读。
