Media is all around us, shaping how we see the world. By understanding media, you become a more critical thinker, creator, and consumer. Let’s dive in!

1. What is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is the subject where you learn to ‘read’ and ‘create’ media products like films, TV shows, advertisements, video games, music videos, and social media content. It is not just about watching or using them, but analyzing how they are made, why they were made, and what effects they have on people.

In Year 7, you will start with the basics: understanding that every media text is constructed with a purpose. You will learn to ask questions like: Who created this? What techniques are used to attract my attention? What message is being sent? These skills are useful for all your other subjects and for navigating daily life.

Media Studies is also a practical subject where you will have the chance to make your own media products, like a poster, a short film trailer, or a magazine cover. You will learn to use creative tools and apply the same techniques that professionals use.

2. The Key Concepts of Media |

To analyze any media text, we use a set of tools called the ‘key concepts’. For OCR, the main concepts are: Media Language, Representation, Audience, and Institution. You will also explore Genre and Narrative. Think of these as lenses through which you can examine every media product.

Let’s briefly define them:

Media Language: The codes and conventions used to create meaning, such as camera angles, lighting, colours, sounds, and editing.

Representation: How media portrays people, places, events, and ideas. It’s about the choices made in showing a version of reality, not reality itself.

Audience: The people who consume a media product. Producers target specific groups, and we study how different audiences respond.

Institution: The organizations that create and distribute media, such as the BBC, Disney, or YouTube. They have specific goals, values and ways of working.

3. Media Texts Everywhere |

In Media Studies, a ‘text’ is not just a book or an article. It is any media product that we can analyze. That includes a TikTok video, a film poster, a radio podcast, a game level, or even a single image on Instagram. Every text is a carefully constructed message.

When you start looking, you’ll notice that media texts use similar patterns. For example, a news broadcast often has a desk, a formal presenter, headlines with dramatic music, and cutaways to reporters on location. These are conventions. You will learn to spot them.

Activity: Over the summer, try listing all the media texts you encounter in one day. You’ll be surprised how many there are!

4. Audience: Who is it for?

No media product is made for everyone. Producers think carefully about their target audience. A cartoon might target children aged 6-10, while a luxury car advert targets wealthy adults. Demographics like age, gender, income level, and interests help define audiences.

We also consider how audiences use media. The Uses and Gratifications theory suggests that people use media for entertainment, information, personal identity, and social interaction. For instance, you might watch a comedy to relax (entertainment) or follow news to stay informed (information).

In Year 7, you’ll learn to profile an audience for a given text, predicting what they would enjoy and why. You’ll also discuss how different people might interpret the same text differently based on their backgrounds.

5. Genre: Patterns and Expectations |

Genre is a French word meaning ‘type’ or ‘kind’. Media products are often grouped into genres because they share similar conventions. In film, genres include horror, sci-fi, comedy, and romance. Each genre has its own set of expected ingredients: horror films often feature dark lighting, jump scares, and creepy music.

Why do we need genres? They help audiences decide what to watch and help producers market their products. However, genres are not fixed; they evolve over time and often mix together, creating hybrids like ‘rom-com’ (romantic comedy) or ‘sci-fi horror’.

Your summer challenge: pick two different trailers for films in the same genre and list the similarities you notice. Then try to spot those conventions in a print poster for the film.

6. Narrative: How Stories are Told |

Narrative refers to the structure of a story. Most narratives follow a pattern: beginning, middle, and end. Theorist Todorov proposed a simple model: equilibrium (a normal situation), disruption (something goes wrong), recognition of disruption, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium.

Think of a superhero film: the city is peaceful (equilibrium), a villain attacks (disruption), the hero realizes the threat, fights the villain, and restores peace (new equilibrium). This model can be applied to news stories, video games, and even advertisements.

Other narrative devices include: enigma codes (mysteries that keep us watching), action codes (actions that suggest what happens next), and binary oppositions (e.g., good vs evil). You’ll explore these to understand how stories grip audiences.

7. Representation: Portraying the World | 表征:描绘世界

Media does not show reality; it represents it. A news report selects certain images and words to construct a version of events. A film character is a constructed representation, not a real person. We study representation to uncover the choices behind these constructions.
