📚 Year 7 OCR Sociology: Formula and Theorem Quick-Reference Handbook | 七年级OCR社会学:公式定理速查手册
In sociology, we often look for patterns – repeated ways in which society works. You can think of these patterns as ‘formulas’ or ‘theorems’ that help explain human behaviour, social structures and cultural norms. This handbook gathers the most important ‘formulas’ for Year 7 OCR Sociology, turning big ideas into memorable shortcuts. Use it to revise key concepts about socialisation, culture, identity, family, education and inequality, always remembering that real people are behind every sociological ‘equation’.
1. Sociology = Social Structure + Social Process |
Sociology is the study of human social life, groups and societies. A useful ‘formula’ to understand the subject is: Sociology = Social Structure + Social Process. Social structure refers to the organised patterns of relationships and institutions (like family, education, government) that make up society. Social process refers to the ongoing actions and interactions (like socialisation, cooperation, conflict) through which people constantly shape and reshape that structure. Together they explain how order and change happen.
When you analyse a social issue, always ask: What is the structure surrounding it, and what processes are at work?
2. Socialisation = Primary Socialisation + Secondary Socialisation |
Socialisation is the lifelong process through which we learn the norms, values and behaviours expected in our society. Its basic formula is: Socialisation = Primary Socialisation + Secondary Socialisation. Primary socialisation happens in early childhood, mainly within the family. Here we learn language, basic manners, gender roles and our first sense of self. Secondary socialisation continues throughout life via schools, peer groups, media, religion and workplaces, teaching us how to act in wider society.
The agents of socialisation – family, education, peers, media – all work together like ingredients in this socialisation ‘recipe’.
3. Culture = Norms + Values + Beliefs |
Culture is the whole way of life of a group of people. We can understand culture with the formula: Culture = Norms + Values + Beliefs. Norms are the unwritten rules of behaviour (like queuing, saying ‘please’). Values are shared ideas about what is good, right and desirable (like honesty, respect). Beliefs are the convictions people hold to be true, often linked to religion, science or tradition. All three elements knit together to form a distinct culture, whether national, ethnic or school-based.
When cultures clash, it is often because norms or values are different. Sociologists use cultural relativism to avoid judging one culture by the standards of another.
4. Identity = Ascribed Status + Achieved Status + Roles |
Our social identity – who we are in society – can be expressed by the formula: Identity = Ascribed Status + Achieved Status + Roles. Ascribed status is the position we are born into or given without choice, such as age, sex, ethnicity or an inherited title. Achieved status is a position we gain through our own efforts, like becoming a student, athlete or team captain. Roles are the expected behaviours attached to a status: a teacher is expected to instruct, a student to learn. The combination of these statuses and roles forms our unique social self.
We play multiple roles daily – son, friend, pupil, gamer – and sometimes experience role conflict when expectations clash.
5. Social Control = Formal Control + Informal Control |
Society needs order, and that order is maintained through social control. Its formula is: Social Control = Formal Control + Informal Control. Formal control comes from official institutions with written rules, such as the police, courts, schools and governments. It uses laws, punishments and rewards that are clearly recorded. Informal control comes from everyday interactions with family, friends and communities. It uses unwritten norms, ridicule, praise or social exclusion to encourage conformity. Both types apply positive sanctions (rewards) and negative sanctions (punishments).
In primary school, a gold star is a positive informal sanction; detention is a negative formal sanction. Both work to shape behaviour.
6. Family Functions (Functionalist View) = Reproductive + Sexual + Socialisation + Economic |
Functionalists see the family as performing essential tasks for society. According to Murdock’s ‘formula’, the four universal functions of the family are: (1) Stable satisfaction of the sex drive with the same partner, (2) Reproduction of the next generation, (3) Primary socialisation of children into shared norms and values, and (4) Economic provision of food, shelter and care. These can be written as: Family Functions = Reproductive + Sexual + Socialisation + Economic. Without these, society would struggle to survive.
Critics say this view ignores diversity – many families do not fit this exact model, yet still function well.
Sociologists view education through different lenses. A simple formula captures the debate: Education = Meritocracy (Functionalist) vs. Reproduction of Inequality (Marxist). Functionalists say education sorts people by talent and effort, acting as a ladder where anyone can succeed if they work hard – a meritocracy. Marxists argue that education mainly reproduces class inequality by giving advantages to the already wealthy and teaching working-class pupils to accept their position. Both perspectives examine the same ‘education’ but arrive at opposite conclusions.
In your own school, ask: do you see examples of meritocracy or of inequality being passed on?
8. Social Stratification (Weber) = Class + Status + Power |
Social stratification means the way society is divided into layers (strata) based on inequality. Max Weber’s three‑part formula is: Stratification = Class + Status + Power. Class refers to a person’s economic position – income, wealth, occupation. Status refers to social honour or prestige, which might not match class (e.g., a teacher may have high status but modest income). Power is the ability to get your own way despite resistance, often linked to political influence. Weber argued that all three dimensions shape a person’s life chances.
Modern sociologists also add gender, ethnicity and age as additional layers of stratification.
9. Research Methods = Quantitative Data + Qualitative Data |
Sociologists gather evidence using research methods. A helpful formula is: Research = Quantitative Data + Qualitative Data. Quantitative data is numerical – statistics, percentages, graphs. It is often collected through surveys, questionnaires and official records. Qualitative data is descriptive – words, images, feelings. It comes from interviews, observations and diaries. Many studies combine both to get a fuller picture (triangulation). Just as in a science experiment, choosing the right method depends on the question you want to answer.
Ethical considerations – consent, confidentiality, safety – are like the safety rules in a lab; they must always be followed.
10. Sociological Perspectives = Functionalism + Marxism + Feminism + Interactionism |
Different sociological perspectives act like different ‘formulas’ for explaining society. The main ones for Year 7 are: Functionalism sees society as a system of interconnected parts working together harmoniously, like a body with organs. Marxism focuses on conflict between social classes (bourgeoisie vs. proletariat) and economic inequality. Feminism highlights gender inequality and patriarchy. Interactionism zooms in on small-scale, everyday interactions and how people use symbols and meanings to build their social world. Using more than one perspective gives a richer analysis.
Think of each perspective as a different pair of glasses; swap them to see the same issue in a new light.
11. Social Change = Internal Factors + External Factors |
Societies do not stand still. A basic formula for social change is: Social Change = Internal Factors + External Factors. Internal factors are changes generated inside society, such as technological inventions, protests, shifting values or demographic changes. External factors come from outside, like war, international trade, migration or climate events. Often both types interact: an external economic crisis may spark internal political movements. Recognising the difference helps sociologists trace why and how societies transform over time.
The Industrial Revolution, for example, was driven by internal innovation (steam engines) and external demand for British goods.
