📚 Year 7 OCR Sociology: Key Formulas and Theorems Quick Reference | 七年级OCR社会学:公式定理速查手册

Welcome to your Year 7 OCR Sociology quick reference guide. This handbook compiles the essential ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’ of sociology, which are actually key concepts, theories, and models that help you understand society. Think of them as the building blocks for analysing how people interact, how societies are structured, and how social life operates. Mastering these ideas will sharpen your sociological imagination.

1. Sociological Imagination |

The sociological imagination, coined by C. Wright Mills, is the ability to connect personal troubles with public issues. It means seeing how an individual’s private life (e.g. losing a job) is shaped by broader historical and structural forces (e.g. an economic recession).

To apply this ‘formula’, always ask: how do social context, time period, and cultural norms influence this person’s experience? This perspective encourages you to step outside your own viewpoint and recognise the social patterns behind individual stories.

2. The Process of Socialisation |

Socialisation is the lifelong process by which individuals learn their culture’s norms, values, and roles. It is often divided into two stages: primary socialisation (early childhood, usually within the family) and secondary socialisation (later years, through school, peer groups, media, and work).

Key ‘theorem’: The looking-glass self (Charles Cooley) states that our self-image is formed by imagining how we appear to others, how they judge that appearance, and how we feel about those judgements. Thus, our identity is socially constructed through interaction.

3. Culture Defined |

Culture refers to the shared way of life of a group of people. It includes both material culture (physical objects like clothing, technology, buildings) and non-material culture (beliefs, values, norms, language, symbols). Think of culture as the ‘software’ that runs a society.

The cultural universal formula: Some elements, such as language, family structures, and rituals around birth and death, appear in every human society. However, the specific forms these universals take vary enormously, showing both human similarity and cultural diversity.

4. Social Roles and Statuses |

In every social situation, people occupy a status (a social position) and perform a role (the expected behaviour attached to that status). Ascribed status is given at birth (e.g. prince), while achieved status is earned through effort (e.g. doctor).

Role conflict occurs when the demands of two or more statuses clash — for example, being a student and an employee at the same time. The formula for harmony is role management: setting priorities and negotiating expectations.

5. Norms and Values |

Values are a society’s broad ideas about what is good, right, and desirable (e.g. honesty, freedom). Norms are the specific rules and expectations that guide behaviour based on those values (e.g. queueing politely reflects the value of order).

Norms can be formal (written laws) or informal (unwritten customs). The ‘normative formula’ states: Values → Norms → Sanctions (positive for conformity, negative for deviance). Sanctions are the rewards or punishments that reinforce norms.

6. Social Control |

Social control refers to the mechanisms society uses to ensure people conform to norms and values. Informal social control is exercised through family, friends, and community (ridicule, gossip, praise). Formal social control is carried out by authorised agents like the police, courts, and government.

The ‘control theory’ formula: People are more likely to conform when they have strong social bonds — attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief (Hirschi). Weak bonds increase deviance. Thus, building community ties is a key strategy for order.

7. Functionalist Perspective |

Functionalism compares society to a living organism. Each institution (family, education, religion, economy) serves a function that contributes to the stability and survival of the whole. This perspective emphasises value consensus and social order.

Key theorem: Durkheim’s study of suicide showed that even a deeply personal act is influenced by social integration and moral regulation. Too little integration leads to egoistic suicide; too much regulation leads to fatalistic suicide — a ‘social facts’ equation.

8. Marxist Perspective |

Marxism views society as structured by economic conflict between the bourgeoisie (owners of capital) and the proletariat (workers). The ‘base’ (economy) shapes the ‘superstructure’ (politics, education, media), which serves ruling-class interests.

Formula for social change: Class consciousness + revolution → new economic system. Ideology (a set of beliefs that justifies inequality) maintains the status quo by spreading false consciousness — a key concept to spot in media analysis.

9. Feminist Perspective |

Feminism focuses on gender inequality and the ways patriarchy (male dominance) shapes society. It argues that many social institutions, from the family to the workplace, are structured to privilege men and marginalise women.

Key theorem: The personal is political. This means that private experiences (e.g. housework distribution, childcare) reflect wider power structures. Feminist research often uses qualitative methods to amplify women’s voices and highlight lived experiences.

10. Research Methods: Quantitative vs Qualitative |

Quantitative methods gather numerical data that can be measured and analysed statistically. Common tools include surveys with closed questions, official statistics, and structured observations. They aim for breadth, generalisability, and objectivity.

Qualitative methods collect in-depth, non-numerical data to understand meanings and experiences. Tools include unstructured interviews, participant observation, and open-ended questionnaires. They prioritise depth, detail, and empathy.

The mixed-methods formula: Combine both approaches to triangulate findings — using quantitative data to spot patterns and qualitative data to explain the ‘why’ behind them.

11. Sampling Methods |

Sampling is the process of selecting a smaller group (sample) from a larger population to participate in research. The goal is to produce a representative sample that accurately reflects the target population’s characteristics.

Probability sampling formula: Random sampling gives every member an equal chance of selection, reducing bias. Stratified random sampling divides the population into subgroups (e.g. by age) and samples proportionally — a powerful tool for representativeness.

Non-probability sampling (e.g. convenience, snowball) is quicker and cheaper but less representative. Sociologists must weigh practical constraints against the need for generalisable results.

12. Ethical Considerations in Research |

Sociological research must follow ethical principles to protect participants. The core ‘formula’ is informed consent: participants must know the purpose, procedures, and any risks before agreeing to take part. Deception should be avoided unless strictly necessary.

Confidentiality and anonymity are non-negotiable — personal data must be protected. Researchers also have a duty to prevent harm (physical, psychological, or social) and must respect the right to withdraw at any time without penalty.

Ethical review boards often require a research proposal to demonstrate these safeguards. The golden rule: treat your participants as you would wish to be treated in the same situation.
