Year 7 SQA Business: Common Misconceptions and How to Correct Them | Year 7 SQA

📚 Year 7 SQA Business: Common Misconceptions and How to Correct Them | Year 7 SQA

In Year 7 SQA Business, you begin to explore the world of enterprise, trade and the economy. Yet at this early stage, many students pick up ideas that are not quite right. These misconceptions can make later topics confusing. This article highlights the most common mistakes and shows simple, accurate ways to think about business instead.

1. ‘Businesses only exist to make profit’ | ‘

Many Year 7 learners think the only reason a business exists is to earn as much money as possible. Profit is certainly important, but it is not the whole story.

Businesses also have to meet customer needs, provide jobs, support communities and behave responsibly. If a business ignores these, it may lose customer trust and long-term success.

Even social enterprises aim to make a positive difference, not just a profit. So thinking about ‘only profit’ limits your understanding of real-world business.

2. ‘Revenue is the same as profit’ | ‘

A very common mix-up is to treat the money coming in from sales as profit. In reality, revenue (or sales income) is the total amount a business earns before anything is taken away.

Profit is what remains after all costs are paid. The simple equation to remember is:

Profit = Revenue − Costs

What is left after costs / 扣除成本后剩余的部分

A business can have high revenue but still make a loss if costs exceed that revenue. Always check both sides.

3. ‘Customer needs and wants are the same’ | ‘顾客需要与想要是一样的’

In Business, needs and wants are different ideas. A need is something a person must have to survive, such as food, water, shelter and basic clothing.

A want is something a person would like to have but can live without, like a new video game, trainers in a specific colour or a luxury holiday. Understanding this difference helps businesses decide what to produce.

Sometimes students wrongly assume all goods are needs, or that businesses only sell wants. Successful businesses often address both, but they must avoid confusing them when planning.

4. ‘A good product sells itself’ | ‘

Many young people believe that if a product is excellent, customers will automatically find it and buy it. In reality, without marketing, even the best ideas can fail.

Businesses need to tell people about the product, explain its benefits, choose the right price and make it easy to buy. This is the marketing mix (often shown as the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place, Promotion).

Think of a new chocolate bar sitting in a factory. No one knows it exists. Unless it is promoted and placed in shops where people can see it, sales will not happen.

5. ‘All businesses are large corporations’ | ‘

When beginners picture a business, they often imagine a big company like a supermarket chain or a global technology firm. In fact, most businesses in the UK are small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Sole traders (one person), partnerships (two or more people) and small private limited companies all play a huge role in the economy. They might be a local hairdresser, a corner shop or a family-run restaurant.

Understanding this variety is vital for SQA case studies. Not every business has thousands of employees – most have fewer than ten.

6. ‘Capital just means money’ | ‘

In everyday language, capital often refers to cash. In Business, the term is wider. Capital includes money, but also the tools, machinery, buildings and technology used to produce goods and services.

An oven in a bakery, a delivery van and a laptop for design work are all examples of physical capital. Without them, a business cannot produce effectively.

When you see the phrase ‘capital goods’, think of these physical items, not just banknotes. This distinction helps in topics like factors of production.

7. ‘Market research is just asking people questions’ | ‘

Many students reduce market research to a questionnaire. While surveys (primary research) are useful, there is much more to it.

Businesses can also use secondary research – existing data from reports, the internet, government statistics or sales records. Observing customer behaviour, running focus groups or testing a product sample are all research methods.

Relying on just one method may lead to incomplete or biased findings. Good market research combines different tools to understand the customer deeply.

8. ‘Competition is always harmful’ | ‘

At first glance, rivals seem like a threat: they might take your customers. However, competition often pushes businesses to improve quality, lower costs and innovate.

Without competition, a monopoly business might become lazy, charge high prices and ignore customer complaints. Healthy competition encourages continuous improvement and benefits consumers.

Collaboration with competitors can also happen – for example, industry groups working on safety standards. So competition should be seen as a force that can be positive when managed well.

9. ‘Sole traders have limited liability’ | ‘

A dangerous misconception is that a sole trader is protected from business debts. In law, a sole trader and the business are the same legal entity. This means the owner has unlimited liability.

If the business fails, creditors can claim the owner’s personal assets – such as a house, car or savings. This is a major risk that distinguishes sole traders from limited companies.

Only incorporated businesses like private limited companies (Ltd) provide limited liability, protecting personal wealth. Always check the legal structure before assuming safety.

10. ‘Raising prices always increases profit’ | ‘

It is tempting to think that a higher price tag automatically means more money for the business. However, if the price rises, some customers may stop buying or switch to a cheaper alternative.

Total revenue depends on price and quantity sold. If the quantity sold drops a lot, overall revenue – and profit – might fall, not rise. This is especially true for products with many substitutes.

Businesses use pricing strategies to find the right balance, considering demand elasticity and competitor prices. Simply upping the price is rarely a guaranteed way to boost profit.
