1. What Is Business? |

A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to satisfy people’s needs and wants. Businesses range from small local shops to huge multinational companies. The main goal of most businesses is to make a profit, but some also aim to help society, such as charities and social enterprises.

Goods are physical items you can touch, like food, clothes and smartphones. Services are activities performed for you, such as hairdressing, banking or transport.

Businesses exist because people cannot produce everything they need themselves. They specialise in making certain products or providing particular services and then trade with others. This is the foundation of our economy.

2. Needs, Wants and Scarcity |

In business, it is important to distinguish between needs and wants. Needs are essential for survival, such as water, food, shelter and clothing. Wants are things people would like to have but are not necessary for living, like video games, designer clothes or holidays.

Scarcity is the basic economic problem: resources are limited, but human wants are unlimited. Because of scarcity, individuals, businesses and governments must make choices about how to use resources. Choosing one thing often means giving up another – this is known as opportunity cost.

3. Factors of Production |

To produce goods and services, businesses use four main resources, known as the factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise.

  • Land includes all natural resources such as oil, water, forests and minerals.
  • Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production.
  • Capital refers to man-made goods that help make other goods, for example machinery, tools, factories and computers.
  • Enterprise is the skill of bringing the other three factors together to start and run a business, taken by entrepreneurs.

Each factor earns a reward: land earns rent, labour earns wages, capital earns interest, and enterprise earns profit.

4. Types of Businesses |

Businesses can be classified by ownership structure. The most common types in the private sector are sole traders, partnerships, and private limited companies.

A sole trader is a business owned and run by one person. It is easy to set up and the owner keeps all profits, but they have unlimited liability – meaning personal assets may be used to pay business debts.

A partnership involves 2 to 20 people who share ownership. Partners can pool skills and capital, but they also share unlimited liability unless they form a limited liability partnership (LLP).

A private limited company (Ltd) is a separate legal entity from its owners. Shareholders have limited liability; they can only lose the money they invested. However, shares cannot be sold to the public.

Other types include public limited companies (Plc) whose shares are traded on the stock exchange, franchises, cooperatives and social enterprises.

5. Business Objectives |

Businesses set objectives to give direction and measure success. Common objectives include making a profit, increasing market share, providing a service, surviving, growing, and being socially responsible.

Profit is often the key objective for private sector businesses. It is calculated as total revenue minus total costs.

Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs

Social enterprises and charities focus on social or environmental aims – any surplus money is reinvested into their mission rather than taken as profit by owners.

6. Introduction to Marketing |

Marketing involves identifying customer needs and satisfying them profitably. It is not just about selling and advertising; it includes market research, product design, pricing, promotion and distribution.

The marketing mix is often summarised as the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. Businesses must carefully combine these elements to attract customers and compete effectively.

  • Product: What you sell – its features, design and quality.
  • Price: How much customers pay. Price must cover costs and be attractive.
  • Place: How the product reaches customers, e.g. online, in stores, through wholesalers.
  • Promotion: How customers learn about the product, such as adverts, social media, special offers.

Market research can be primary (gathering new data directly, such as surveys and interviews) or secondary (using existing information like reports and internet data).

7. Understanding Costs, Revenue and Profit |

To succeed, a business must manage its finances carefully. Costs are the expenses a business pays to produce goods and services. They can be split into fixed costs and variable costs.

Fixed costs do not change with the level of output, such as rent and insurance. Variable costs change directly with output, for example raw materials and packaging. Total costs are the sum of fixed and variable costs.

Total Costs = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs

Revenue is the money a business earns from selling its products. It is calculated by multiplying the selling price per unit by the quantity sold.

Revenue = Selling Price × Quantity Sold

Profit is the reward for taking risks. If revenue is greater than total costs, the business makes a profit. If costs are greater than revenue, it makes a loss.

8. The Role of Entrepreneurship |

An entrepreneur is someone who spots a business opportunity, takes the risk of setting up a new venture, and organises the factors of production. Famous entrepreneurs include those who started tech companies, retail chains and innovative services.

Entrepreneurs bring important benefits to the economy: they create jobs, develop new products and ideas, increase competition, and can improve communities. However, they face many risks, such as financial loss, stress, and long working hours.

Key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs include creativity, resilience, decision-making ability, leadership and a willingness to take calculated risks.

9. Business Ethics and Sustainability |

In today’s world, businesses are expected to behave ethically and sustainably. Ethics means acting in a way that is morally right – not just following the law, but treating workers, customers and the environment fairly.

Sustainability involves using resources in a way that meets present needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This includes reducing waste, using renewable energy, and designing products that can be recycled.

Businesses that act ethically can build a good reputation, attract loyal customers and avoid legal problems. Unethical behaviour – such as polluting or paying unfair wages – can harm a company’s image and lead to fines.

10. The Business Plan |

A business plan is a detailed document that sets out what a business aims to do and how it will achieve its goals. It is especially important when starting a new business or when seeking finance from banks or investors.

A typical business plan includes: an executive summary, description of the product or service, market research, marketing strategy, operations plan, financial forecasts, and information about the management team.

Having a clear business plan helps the entrepreneur to stay focused, anticipate problems, and measure progress. It can also show lenders that the business idea is viable and reduces their risk.
