1. Prehistoric Scotland: Stone Circles and First Farmers |

Scotland’s first people arrived after the last Ice Age, around 12,000 years ago. They were hunter-gatherers, but around 4000 BC, farming was introduced. This led to the construction of remarkable stone structures. The most famous Neolithic village is Skara Brae in Orkney, discovered after a storm in 1850. It shows stone furniture, drains and homes linked by passageways, proving that prehistoric Scots lived in settled communities.

Stone circles like Callanish on Lewis and the Ring of Brodgar in Orkney were built around 3000-2000 BC. Scholars believe they were used for ceremonies, tracking the seasons or as gathering places. The effort required to move and erect huge stones tells us that these early societies had strong leadership and shared beliefs.

2. The Roman Invasion and Hadrian’s Wall |

In AD 79, the Roman general Agricola invaded what is now Scotland, then called Caledonia. The Romans built forts, roads and even a wall – the Antonine Wall – between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. However, the native tribes, whom the Romans called ‘Picts’, fiercely resisted. By the early 3rd century, the Romans had retreated to Hadrian’s Wall, built earlier in AD 122 across northern England.

Hadrian’s Wall became the northern frontier of the Roman Empire for nearly 300 years. It was more than just a barrier: it had milecastles, turrets and forts where soldiers from across the empire lived and traded with local people. The wall symbolised Roman power and left a lasting mark on the landscape.

3. The Picts and the Kingdom of Dál Riata |

After the Romans left, northern Britain was divided among various peoples. The Picts lived in the north and east, while the Scots (originally from Ireland) established the kingdom of Dál Riata on the west coast and islands around the 5th-6th centuries. The Picts are famous for their mysterious symbol stones carved with animals and intricate designs.

According to tradition, the missionary St. Columba arrived from Ireland in 563 AD and founded a monastery on the island of Iona. This became a centre of learning and helped spread Christianity among both the Scots and the Picts, gradually bringing the two
