Year 7 SQA Media Studies: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | Year 7 SQA

📚 Year 7 SQA Media Studies: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | Year 7 SQA

Welcome to your summer bridging course for Year 7 Media Studies, designed to introduce you to the exciting world of media analysis and creation. This guide will help you build a solid foundation before you start the SQA curriculum, covering key concepts such as media language, audience, representation and narrative. By working through these sections, you will develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation of the media messages that surround us every day.

1. What is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is the exploration of how media products such as films, television programmes, advertisements, news articles and social media posts are created, and how they shape our understanding of the world. It involves looking closely at the language, techniques and choices made by producers to influence audiences. In Year 7, you will start by learning to ‘read’ media texts with a critical eye, just as you would analyse a novel in English class.

Unlike simply consuming media for entertainment, this subject asks you to question what you see. Why was this image chosen? Who is the target audience? What message is being sent beneath the surface? These questions lie at the heart of the SQA approach to Media, which focuses on both analysis and practical production.

2. The Media Triangle: Text, Audience, Production |

In SQA Media Studies, every media product can be examined using three connected points: the text itself, its intended audience and the production process behind it. This is often called the ‘media triangle’ and it will be a central framework throughout your learning. Understanding how these three elements interact is the key to becoming a confident media analyst.

Text The media product itself, including its genre, narrative, visual codes and sound. For example, a movie poster or a TikTok video.
Audience The people who consume the media, how they interpret it and what they do with the message. Audiences can be passive or active, and producers target specific groups.
Production Everything behind the scenes, including the institution that made it, the technology used, the budget, legal constraints and the creative choices of the team.

When you analyse a clip from your favourite show, try asking: what is on screen (text)? Who is it made for (audience)? How was it put together and who funded it (production)? This three-step check will soon become second nature.

3. Media Language: Codes and Conventions |

Media language refers to the tools and rules that producers use to create meaning. These are divided into codes (the building blocks of meaning) and conventions (the expected ways of doing things in a particular genre). In your first year, you will learn to spot technical codes such as camera angles, lighting and editing, as well as symbolic codes like colour and body language.

  • Camera shots: A close-up can show emotion; a long shot establishes setting and power relationships.
  • Lighting: High-key lighting creates a cheerful mood, while low-key lighting with shadows suggests mystery or danger.
  • Editing: Fast cuts can build excitement; a slow fade might indicate the end of a scene or a peaceful mood.

Conventions are just as important. For instance, a news broadcast will typically feature a desk, a serious presenter and a headline scroll. A horror film convention includes isolated locations, sudden noises and a ‘final girl’. Recognising these patterns helps you predict and interpret media content.

4. Genre: Recognising Patterns |

Genre is a way of grouping media texts that share similar codes and conventions. When you pick a film or a game, you often choose based on genre – comedy, action, fantasy, horror, sci-fi. Studying genre helps you understand audience expectations and how producers can either follow the rules or cleverly subvert them for effect.

The SQA curriculum encourages you to identify generic signifiers. For example, a Western might include cowboy hats, desert landscapes, saloons and a showdown. A teen drama might feature school corridors, friendship groups, pop music on the soundtrack and problems relating to identity. By listing these features, you will be able to write detailed genre analyses.

Hybrid genres mix two or more established genres, such as a romantic comedy (rom-com) or a science-fiction horror. These hybrids often attract wider audiences and keep genres fresh. As you watch summer blockbusters, try to spot the hybrid elements.

5. Narrative Structure in Media |

Narrative is simply the way a story is organised and told. In Media Studies, we look beyond the plot to examine how the sequence of events, character roles and conflicts create meaning. A classic structure is Todorov’s equilibrium theory: a state of balance is disrupted, the disruption is recognised, an attempt is made to repair the damage, and a new equilibrium is reached.

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equilibrium

Another useful concept is binary opposition, which means two opposing forces drive the story forward. Examples include good vs evil, young vs old, nature vs technology. Spotting these opposites helps you uncover the deeper values of a media text.

Pay attention to character types such as the hero, the villain, the helper and the donor. These roles, inspired by Propp’s character theory, appear again and again in films, games and even advertisements. Over the summer, try mapping the characters from a favourite film onto these roles.

6. Representation: How Media Portrays the World | 再现:媒体如何描绘世界

Representation refers to the way media presents people, places, events and ideas. It is not a mirror of reality but a constructed version. Producers select and combine images, words and sounds to create a particular portrayal. In your SQA course, you will be asked to discuss how different groups – based on gender, age, ethnicity, social class or disability – are represented in a text.

Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated representations of a group. While they can help audiences quickly understand a character, they can also be harmful and limit our view of real people. A countertype is a positive or more realistic representation that challenges a traditional stereotype. For example, a female action hero who is strong and independent can be seen as a countertype to the damsel in distress.

When you consume media this summer, keep asking: who is included and who is left out? Whose perspective is being shown? Is the representation fair and diverse? These questions are at the heart of critical media analysis.

7. Audience: Who is Watching? |

Audiences are not a single mass but a collection of individuals with different needs and tastes. Media producers categorise audiences by demographics such as age, gender, income and location, or by psychographics such as lifestyle, values and interests. An important SQA skill is identifying a target audience and explaining why a text appeals to that group.

Two key theories help explain the audience-text relationship. The hypodermic needle model suggests that media injects ideas directly into a passive audience, who accept the message without question. In contrast, the uses and gratifications model argues that audiences are active: they use media to satisfy needs such as entertainment, information, personal identity and social interaction.

Think about your own media habits. Why do you watch certain YouTube channels? Probably for a mix of reasons: to learn new skills, to feel part of a community or simply to relax. Recognising these motivations will sharpen your analysis.

8. Media Institutions and Production |

Every media text comes from an institution – a company or organisation that funds and distributes it. This could be a global conglomerate like Disney or the BBC, a small independent studio, or even a single individual posting on social media. The institution’s values, business model and target market all influence the final product.

Public service broadcasters, such as the BBC in the UK, have a remit to inform, educate and entertain. They are funded by the licence fee and must cater to a wide range of audiences. Commercial broadcasters, on the other hand, rely on advertising revenue, so they need to attract large audiences to sell to advertisers. Understanding this difference explains many of the choices you see on screen.

Convergence and synergy are modern production strategies. Convergence means media content is available across multiple platforms (e.g., a film released in cinemas, on streaming, and promoted via a video game). Synergy is when different parts of the same parent company promote each other. For instance, a superhero film may have its soundtrack released by the same conglomerate’s music label. These strategies are worth looking out for in blockbuster marketing.

9. Analysing a Print Advertisement |

Print adverts are perfect texts for practising close analysis because they are static and packed with codes. Start by describing what you see: the main image, the layout, the typography, the brand name and the slogan. Then apply the media triangle: what techniques does the text use, who is the target audience, and what institution produced it?

The use of colour is highly symbolic. Red can mean passion, danger or excitement; blue often suggests trust and calm; green is associated with nature and health. The gaze of a model can create a direct connection with the viewer or suggest a narrative. Never ignore the small print – it often contains legal details and reveals the true purpose of the ad.

For summer practice, find a magazine advert or a billboard image online and write a short analysis: identify the product, state who you think the audience is, and pick three codes that support your view. This type of exercise will directly prepare you for SQA assessment tasks.

10. Introduction to Moving Image: Film and TV |

Moving image texts combine visual codes, audio and editing to create a seamless flow of meaning. When you watch a film clip for the first time, resist the urge to just follow the story. Instead, watch once for general understanding, then a second time pausing to note the technical elements: camera movement, transitions, sound effects and music.

Diegetic sound is any sound that exists within the world of the film, such as characters talking, doors slamming or a radio playing. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience alone, such as voice-over narration or a dramatic music score. The interplay between these two layers creates atmosphere and guides emotional responses.

Keep an eye on camera angles. A low-angle shot makes a character look powerful; a high-angle shot can make them seem vulnerable. A point-of-view shot invites you to see through a character’s eyes. Over the summer, try turning off the sound of a short scene and describing how the visuals alone tell the story.

11. Digital Media and Social Media |

Digital media is increasingly central to the SQA curriculum, reflecting the platforms you use every day. Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube are not just tools for communication; they are powerful media institutions that shape culture, politics and identity. Analysing a TikTok trend or an Instagram story uses the same skills as analysing a traditional film poster.

User-generated content blurs the line between producer and audience. Now anyone can be a ‘produser’. However, algorithms curate what you see based on your data, creating filter bubbles and echo chambers. Being aware of these processes is a key part of media literacy and will be discussed in your SQA lessons.

A useful summer activity is to pick a social media post from a brand or influencer and perform a full analysis. Consider the platform’s conventions, the use of hashtags, the visual composition, the target audience and the brand’s intentions. You might be surprised by how much strategy goes into a single post.

12. Getting Ready for Year 7: Study Tips and Resources | 为 Year 7 做好准备:学习技巧与资源

To begin Year 7 Media Studies with confidence, cultivate a habit of active watching. Keep a media diary where you jot down interesting adverts, film scenes or social media campaigns you encounter over the summer. For each entry, note the medium, the intended audience, a few key codes and your personal response.

Create a simple glossary of terms. Start with the keywords from this guide: genre, representation, narrative, code, convention, audience, institution, convergence. Write a clear definition in your own words and add an example from a media text you know well. This glossary will grow throughout the year and become a powerful revision tool.

Explore the SQA website to look at specimen papers and course specifications for Media Studies. This will demystify what is expected of you. Also, check out educational YouTube channels and BBC Bitesize for clear, curriculum-linked explanations. Little and often is the best approach to summer learning.

Finally, talk about the media you love with friends and family. Explain why a certain advert works, or debate the representation in a video game. Media Studies is everywhere, and the more you discuss it, the more naturally the analytical vocabulary will come to you in class.
