1. Stage Geography |

Upstage: The area of the stage furthest from the audience, traditionally raised higher. Moving upstage can make a character seem distant or less important in a scene.

Downstage: The part of the stage closest to the audience. Actors move downstage to create intimacy or to grab the audience’s attention.

Stage Left: The actor’s left side when facing the audience. Useful for blocking and for creating balanced stage pictures.

Stage Right: The actor’s right side when facing the audience.

Centre Stage: The middle area of the performance space. Standing centre stage often signals that a character is powerful or the focus of the scene.

Onstage / Offstage: ‘Onstage’ means any area visible to the audience, while ‘offstage’ refers to the wings and backstage areas hidden from view.

2. Types of Stage |

Proscenium Arch: A traditional stage with a frame (‘arch’) separating the performers from the audience, often featuring a curtain.

Thrust Stage: A stage that extends into the audience on three sides. The actors are surrounded by spectators, creating an immersive feel.

Traverse Stage: A stage with the audience seated on two opposite sides, like a catwalk. Perfect for confrontational scenes.

In the Round: The acting area is completely surrounded by the audience. There is no ‘front’, so blocking must consider all angles.

Black Box Theatre: A simple, flexible performance space, usually painted black, where the seating and stage can be rearranged.

Apron: The part of the stage that projects forward past the proscenium arch. Actors use the apron to speak directly to the audience.

3. Body and Movement |

Gesture: A movement of the hand, arm or head that communicates meaning, like pointing or waving.
