1. Map Symbols and Grid References |

Ordnance Survey (OS) maps use a standard set of symbols to represent human and physical features. Blue shows water bodies, green indicates woodland, and black lines mark roads and footpaths. Specific symbols, such as a crossed sword for a battle site or a tent for a campsite, help users interpret the landscape without needing written labels.

Grid references allow precise location finding. A four‑figure grid reference (e.g. 1845) identifies the southwestern corner of a 1 km × 1 km square. To give it, go ‘along the corridor’ (eastings) first, then ‘up the stairs’ (northings). For greater accuracy, a six‑figure grid reference (e.g. 183456) divides the square into tenths, pinpointing a location to 100 m.

2. Scale, Distance and Direction |

Scale expresses the ratio between a distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. On a 1:25 000 map, 1 cm represents 25 000 cm (250 m) in reality. A 1:50 000 map means 1 cm equals 500 m. Knowing the scale lets you measure straight‑line distances using a ruler and then convert using the scale factor.

Ground distance = Map distance × Scale factor

Direction is indicated using compass points. The four cardinal points are north (N), south (S), east (E) and west (W). More precise work uses the 16‑point compass, where directions like north‑north‑east (NNE) and south‑south‑west (SSW) appear. Always state the direction from one place to another accurately.

3. Relief and Contour Lines |

Relief describes the shape and height of the land. On OS maps, relief is shown primarily by brown contour lines. Each contour joins points of equal height above sea level. The vertical interval (difference in height between contour lines) is usually 5 m or 10 m on a 1:25 000 map. Closely spaced contours indicate a steep slope; widely spaced contours show a gentle slope or flat land.

Cross‑sections can be drawn to visualise the land profile along a chosen line. By plotting contour values against distance on graph paper, you can see whether a route goes over a hill or through a valley. Additional clues come from spot heights (e.g. •Δ 345) and layer colours: orange/brown for high ground, green for lowland.

4. Settlement Types and Hierarchy |

A settlement is a place where people live. Settlements range from an isolated dwelling or hamlet to a village, town or city. Their size, services and sphere of influence form a hierarchy. A hamlet might have only a few houses, whereas a city offers hospitals, universities and large shopping centres, serving a wide region.

Settlement patterns can be nucleated (buildings clustered around a central point), linear (strung along a road or river) or dispersed (scattered individually). Site factors describe the actual ground a settlement is built on (flat land, dry point, crossing point), while situation refers to its relationship with the surrounding area, such as proximity to resources or transport routes.

5. River Processes and Landforms |

Rivers shape the landscape through erosion, transportation and deposition. The four erosion processes are hydraulic action (force of water), abrasion (rocks scraping the bed), attrition (rocks colliding and smoothing) and solution (dissolving minerals). Transported material, or load, moves by traction, saltation, suspension and solution.

In the upper course, the river has high energy due to steep gradients, carving V‑shaped valleys, interlocking spurs, rapids and waterfalls. A waterfall forms where a band of hard rock lies over soft rock; the soft rock is eroded more quickly, creating a plunge pool beneath. As the river meanders across flatter land in the middle and lower courses, it creates meanders, oxbow lakes, flood plains and levees.

6. Coastal Processes and Features |

Coasts are constantly reshaped by constructive and destructive waves. Constructive waves have a strong swash and weak backwash, building up beaches. Destructive waves have a stronger backwash, pulling sediment out to sea and causing erosion. Coastal erosion includes the same four processes as rivers, plus wave pounding and corrosion.

Erosion creates landforms such as headlands and bays (formed where alternating hard and soft rock outcrop), cliffs, wave‑cut platforms, caves, arches and stacks. Depositional features include beaches, spits and bars. Longshore drift moves sediment along the coast in a zig‑zag pattern, driven by waves approaching at an angle. The Welsh coastline, from the Glamorgan Heritage Coast to the Gower Peninsula, displays excellent examples of these features.

7. Weather and Climate Factors |

Weather is the day‑to‑day condition of the atmosphere (temperature, precipitation, wind, cloud cover), while climate is the average weather over at least 30 years. Key factors affecting the UK’s climate include latitude, altitude, distance from the sea (continentality), prevailing wind and ocean currents. The North Atlantic Drift, a warm ocean current, keeps western coastal areas of Wales milder in winter.

Rainfall types in the UK include relief (orographic) rainfall, frontal rainfall and convectional rainfall. Relief rainfall occurs when moist air is forced to rise over high ground, cooling and condensing. The windward side of mountains, such as the Cambrian Mountains, receives heavy rain, while the leeward side experiences a rain shadow, leading to drier conditions.

8. Population Distribution and Migration |

Population distribution describes where people live. Places are densely populated if many people live there, or sparsely populated if few people do. Reasons for dense populations include flat, fertile land, a mild climate, good water supply and economic opportunities (jobs). Sparsely populated areas are often too hot, too cold, too dry, mountainous or have poor soil.

Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. Push factors drive people away (e.g. conflict, natural disasters, unemployment). Pull factors attract people to a new area (e.g. better jobs, safety, education). Rural‑to‑urban migration in many countries is fuelled by the perception of better lives in cities, though it can lead to overcrowding in mega‑cities.

9. Ecosystems and Environmental Issues |

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their non‑living environment. Key components include producers (plants), consumers (animals) and decomposers (bacteria, fungi). Nutrients are recycled within the system. Large‑scale ecosystems or biomes include tropical rainforests, deserts, tundra and temperate deciduous woodlands, such as those found across Wales.

Tropical rainforests, located near the equator, are hot and wet all year, supporting immense biodiversity. Human activities such as deforestation, mining and agriculture are destroying these environments, contributing to climate change and loss of species. Polluting our atmosphere and rivers is a local to global concern, reminding us that all environments are interconnected.

10. Fieldwork Skills and Case Studies |

Geographical fieldwork involves enquiry, data collection, presentation, analysis and evaluation. In Year 7, you may investigate river channel changes, traffic counts or environmental quality surveys in your local area. Primary data is collected first‑hand (measurements, questionnaires), while secondary data uses existing sources (maps, census statistics).

Presenting data clearly is essential. Bar charts, line graphs, pie charts and annotated field sketches help reveal patterns. For example, plotting river depth against distance downstream might show an increase due to tributaries joining. Case studies, such as the impact of a flood event on the River Severn near Shrewsbury, help you apply theory to real‑world situations and are a key skill in WJEC assessments.
