Year 7 WJEC History: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | 七年级 WJEC 历史:答题技巧与评分标准

📚 Year 7 WJEC History: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | 七年级 WJEC 历史:答题技巧与评分标准

Performing well in the Year 7 WJEC History assessment is not just about remembering dates and names. It demands a clear understanding of how to structure answers, use evidence and target the specific skills that examiners are looking for. This guide breaks down the essential exam techniques and marking criteria that will help you turn sound knowledge into solid marks.

1. Understanding Command Words |

Command words are the verbs in a question that tell you what kind of thinking the examiner expects. In WJEC History, words like ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘analyse’ and ‘evaluate’ each require a different approach. Misreading a command word is one of the most common reasons students lose marks, even when they know the content well.

Command Word What It Asks For 指令词 要求
Describe Give a detailed account of features, events or changes. Do not explain causes.
Explain Show how or why something happened. Use ‘because’, ‘therefore’ and ‘as a result’.
Analyse Break a topic into parts, look at connections and prioritise factors.
Evaluate Make a judgement about importance, success or reliability, supported by criteria.

Before you write anything, circle the command word in the question and keep it in mind as you plan. A ‘describe’ answer that slips into explaining will not earn the extra marks you might hope for because it does not match the task.

2. Mastering Assessment Objectives |

WJEC marks your work against clear assessment objectives (AOs). For Year 7, these mirror the approach used at GCSE: AO1 tests your knowledge and understanding of the period; AO2 tests your ability to explain and analyse historical events and change; AO3 focuses on how you use sources. Each question on your paper will target one or more of these AOs, so recognising them helps you shape your answer.

For instance, a question that asks you to ‘describe the features of a medieval village’ mainly tests AO1 because it relies on recall of facts. A question that asks you to ‘explain why William won the Battle of Hastings’ brings in AO2 as you need to show causal connections. When you see a source-based question, AO3 is at work – you must comment on what the source tells you and how useful or reliable it is. Understanding these objectives lets you know where to spend your time: for AO1, you focus on accurate detail; for AO2, you build chains of reasoning; for AO3, you assess the nature of the evidence.

3. How to Answer Describe Questions |

Describe questions ask you to paint a clear picture. You should write in a logical order, selecting vivid and specific details that relate directly to the topic. For example, if asked to describe a motte-and-bailey castle, mention the steep mound (motte), the wooden keep on top, the surrounding courtyard (bailey) and the defensive ditch. Avoid drifting into why it was built – that belongs in an explain answer.

A strong ‘describe’ answer often uses adjectives and sensory language, but remains entirely factual. You can structure it spatially (from the centre outward), chronologically (from morning to night in a peasant’s day) or by category (political features, economic features). Always check that every sentence adds a new descriptive detail and does not explain causes. This keeps your answer tightly focused on the command word.

4. How to Answer Explain Questions |

Explain questions require you to show why or how something happened. This is where you demonstrate AO2 skills. Instead of simply stating a cause, you need to unfold the logic: what led to what, and why. Useful linking phrases include ‘this meant that…’, ‘as a consequence…’ and ‘because…’. WJEC examiners expect you to develop a connected explanation rather than a list of reasons.

For example, when explaining why the Black Death spread so quickly, you might start with the poor living conditions in towns, then link that to the large rat population, then show how fleas transmitted the disease, and finally connect to the movement of people along trade routes. Each step should flow naturally into the next. Aim for at least three fully explained points, each backed by specific factual evidence. A single, well-developed chain is often more effective than several short, unconnected sentences.

5. How to Answer Analyse Questions |

Analyse questions push you to break down a historical situation into its parts and examine relationships. Often you are asked to analyse the importance of a factor or the impact of an event. The key is to weigh elements against each other and to discuss links. Simply explaining each factor in isolation does not meet the demand for analysis.

You can approach analysis by using a topic sentence that identifies the factor, then showing how it connected to other factors, and finally commenting on its relative importance. For instance, analysing the reasons for the decline of feudalism might involve linking the Black Death’s impact on labour to the resulting shift in peasants’ bargaining power, while also considering the role of changing military technology. When you prioritise factors, use phrases like ‘the most significant reason is…’, ‘a secondary, yet linked, factor is…’. This shows the examiner you are thinking analytically, not just descriptively.

6. How to Answer Evaluate Questions |

Evaluate questions require you to make a supported judgement. In Year 7 contexts, this might mean evaluating the usefulness of a source or assessing how far a change was positive. Your answer must go beyond a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and provide balanced reasoning. WJEC expects you to establish clear criteria for your judgement.

When evaluating a source, consider its content, its author, the time it was created and its purpose. You might write, ‘The source is useful because it gives a first-hand view of castle life, but it is limited because the author, a monk, never went near a battle and might exaggerate to make a moral point.’ For evaluative questions on change, weigh evidence on both sides before reaching a conclusion. The judgement – often starting with ‘Overall…’ or ‘To a great extent…’ – must be clearly stated and directly address the question. Without that final judgement, even a detailed balanced account will not reach the highest levels.

7. Using the PEEL Paragraph Structure | 使用 PEEL 段落结构

PEEL stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. It is a reliable structure for building well-organised paragraphs, especially in explain and analyse questions. First, state your Point clearly. Second, provide specific Evidence – a date, name, event or statistic. Third, Explain how the evidence supports your point and connects to the question. Finally, Link back to the question or forward to the next paragraph.

PEEL 是 Point(论点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)和 Link(连接)的缩写。

For example, in a question about why castles were built, a PEEL paragraph might be: Point – ‘One key reason William built castles was to control the rebellious Saxon population.’ Evidence – ‘For instance, the motte-and-bailey castle at York was constructed immediately after the northern rebellion of 1069.’ Explanation – ‘This shows that William needed a swift, imposing presence in disloyal areas to discourage further uprisings and house his knights.’ Link – ‘Therefore, military control was a more urgent driver than simply providing a home for the lord.’ Practising PEEL will make your writing clearer and more examiner-friendly.

8. Working with Sources and Evidence |

Sources are the raw material of history, and the WJEC assessment will often present you with a short text or image. You must do more than just copy from the source; you need to extract information and then interrogate it. Begin by asking yourself what the source tells you directly, and then think about what it suggests indirectly.

When commenting on a source’s utility, use the NOP method: Nature (what type of source is it – a diary, a chronicle, a painting?), Origin (who made it and when?), and Purpose (why was it created – to inform, to persuade, to entertain?). For example, ‘This source is a twelfth-century chronicle written by a monk, which is useful because it provides a contemporary account of the king’s actions, but it may be less reliable because chroniclers often praised the king who funded their monastery.’ Never treat a source as simply ‘true’ or ‘biased’ without explaining your reasoning. Using quotation marks around short phrases from the source, and then adding your own comment, shows the examiner you are actively engaging with the material.

9. Sequencing and Cause-Effect Chains |

History is about change over time, and WJEC rewards answers that show a good sense of chronology. Even in a short answer, signalling the order of events with words like ‘firstly’, ‘subsequently’ and ‘eventually’ demonstrates that you understand how an event unfolded. You should also practise creating cause-effect chains that link events together.

For instance, when discussing the Norman Conquest, avoid jumping from the death of Edward the Confessor to the Battle of Hastings without explaining the claim of Harold Godwinson and the invasion of Harald Hardrada. An effective chain might be: ‘Edward the Confessor died without an heir, which led to Harold being crowned king. This provoked William of Normandy, who had been promised the throne. Meanwhile, Harald Hardrada also invaded, forcing Harold to march north. After defeating Hardrada, Harold had to race south, and his exhausted army was finally overcome by William at Hastings.’ Each link is clear, and the sequence makes the outcome understandable. Time-lines and flow diagrams can be very helpful revision tools for this skill.

10. Time Management and Planning |

One of the biggest challenges in a timed assessment is using every minute well. As soon as the test begins, scan all the questions and note how many marks each is worth. Allocate your time proportionally – a 4-mark question should not take as long as a 12-mark question. Many students spend too long on their first answer and then rush the higher-scoring later questions.

Spend the first two to three minutes planning your overall approach. For longer answers, jot down a quick bullet-point plan on scrap paper – three or four key points, each with a piece of evidence. This prevents you from going off-topic and makes sure you hit the assessment objectives. Also keep an eye on the clock and try to leave at least three minutes at the end to check your work. Look for command word mistakes, missing evidence or unclear expressions. Simple corrections can lift your grade.

11. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Even capable students can lose marks through avoidable errors. The two most common are narrative detachment and failing to answer the question set. Narrative detachment happens when a student writes everything they know about a topic as a long story rather than selecting only what is relevant. The examiner will not reward information that does not directly answer the command word.

Other frequent pitfalls include: using weak generalisations without evidence (e.g. ‘castles were strong’ instead of ‘castles had stone walls up to three metres thick’); mixing up command words, so that a ‘describe’ answer becomes an ‘explain’ one; ignoring the source in a source question; and forgetting to make a judgement in an evaluate question. Also, do not use bullet points unless the question specifically allows them – formal continuous prose is expected. Each time you write a sentence, ask yourself, ‘Does this directly respond to what the question asks?’ If the answer is no, cross it out or revise it.

12. Marking Criteria and Level Descriptors |

Understanding how WJEC examiners assign marks can take the mystery out of assessment. For longer written answers, marks are usually awarded using level descriptors. Your answer is placed into a level by matching its qualities to a description, and then a mark is given within that level.

A typical mark scheme for an explanatory question might look like this simplified version:

Level Descriptor
Level 1 Simple or generalised statements with limited supporting detail. The answer shows basic understanding but the explanation is not developed.
Level 2 A focused explanation with accurate supporting detail. Some links are made between causes or events, but the chain of reasoning may not be fully consistent.
Level 3 A well-developed, analytical explanation that is consistently linked to the question. Evidence is precisely selected and reasoning is logical throughout.

When you practise, try to move your answers from Level 1 into Level 3 by adding precise evidence, connecting sentences with reasoning words, and constantly checking that your explanation directly answers the question.
