1. What is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is the subject that examines how meaning is created, shared and understood in various forms of communication. At its heart, it explores the relationship between media producers, media texts and audiences. In Year 7, you begin by looking at everyday media – posters, adverts, film trailers, music videos and online content – and asking critical questions: Who made this? Why? How is it trying to influence me?

2. Media Language: Visual Codes |

Media language refers to the ‘grammar’ of media – the tools and rules used to construct meaning. Visual codes include all the things you can see: colour, lighting, setting, costume, props, facial expressions and body language. For example, high-key lighting often suggests happiness or clarity, while low-key lighting creates mystery or fear. Colours like red can signal danger, passion or urgency. By learning to identify these codes, you can explain how a media text creates mood and communicates ideas without words.

3. Media Language: Audio Codes |

Audio codes are the sounds that accompany moving images, such as dialogue, sound effects and music. Diegetic sound comes from within the world of the text (e.g. a character speaking or a door slamming), while non-diegetic sound is added later for the audience (e.g. a dramatic soundtrack or voice-over). The tempo, volume and instrumentation of music can entirely change the emotional impact of a scene. Sound bridges and jingles are also important audio codes used in advertising and broadcasting.

4. Camera Shots and Angles |

Understanding camera work is central to media analysis. A close-up tightly frames a person or object, revealing detail and emotion; a long shot shows the full human figure and its surroundings, establishing context. Camera angles also communicate power and perspective: a low-angle shot looks up at a subject, making it appear powerful or threatening, while a high-angle shot looks down, making the subject seem small or vulnerable. Other key shot types include medium shot, extreme close-up and point-of-view (POV) shot, which places the viewer in a character’s eyes.

5. Editing and Montage |

Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots to create a sequence. The pace of editing influences tension: quick cuts can build excitement in an action scene, while long takes allow slow, reflective moments. Continuity editing aims to make the cuts invisible so the story flows smoothly, often using the 180-degree rule and shot-reverse-shot for conversations. Montage, by contrast, is a noticeable technique where a series of shots are edited together to condense time or create symbolic meaning; it was famously developed by Soviet filmmakers like Sergei Eisenstein.

6. Representation and Stereotypes |

Representation is the way media portray events, people and ideas. All media texts are constructions, not transparent windows on reality. Producers make choices about what to include and exclude, which shapes our perception. Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated, generalisations about groups of people based on characteristics like age, gender, ethnicity or nationality. While stereotypes can be harmless shorthand, they often reinforce prejudice and limit our understanding. Analysing representation involves asking: who is being represented, how, and whether the portrayal is fair, positive or negative.

7. Audience and Target Market |

Every media text is designed with a specific audience in mind. A target audience is defined by demographics – age, gender, income, education – and psychographics – interests, values, lifestyle. The uses and gratifications theory suggests audiences actively seek media to fulfil needs such as information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment. Understanding audience helps creators tailor their content and distribution strategies, and it also allows us to examine how different people might interpret the same text differently based on their background.

8. Media Institutions and Production |

Media institutions are the organisations that create, produce and distribute media texts. This includes global corporations like the BBC, Disney or Netflix, as well as independent companies and public service broadcasters. Institutions have their own values, brand identities and commercial goals that influence the content they produce. For instance, the BBC has a mission to inform, educate and entertain, funded by a licence fee, while commercial broadcasters rely on advertising revenue. Understanding how production contexts shape media texts is a key skill in your course.

9. Media Forms: Print, Broadcast and Online |

Media texts come in different forms, each with distinct conventions. Print media includes newspapers, magazines, posters and comics; they rely on layout, typography, images and headlines to grab attention. Broadcast media like television and radio are transmitted to large audiences simultaneously and follow schedules. Online and digital media – websites, apps, social media platforms, video games – are interactive, often allowing users to create and share their own content. Comparing these forms helps you see how technology shapes the way stories are told.

10. Genre and Narrative |

Genre is a way of grouping media texts according to shared features, such as character types, settings, themes and iconography. Familiar genres include horror, comedy, science fiction and news bulletin. Genres offer audiences a predictable framework but constantly evolve. Narrative refers to the structure and telling of a story. Most narratives follow a linear sequence – equilibrium, disruption, quest, resolution, new equilibrium – but some are non-linear, using flashbacks or multiple storylines. Analysing genre and narrative helps you recognise patterns and understand why certain choices are made.

11. Advertising and Persuasive Techniques |

Advertising is one of the most immediate forms of media you encounter daily. Adverts use a range of persuasive techniques: celebrity endorsement, emotional appeal, repetition, rhetorical questions, slogans and calls to action. Media producers also rely on soft sell (lifestyle association) and hard sell (direct benefits) approaches. Analysing adverts involves identifying the target audience, the overt message and the deeper, often aspirational, message being communicated. Understanding these techniques equips you to recognise manipulation and become a more critical consumer.

12. Regulation and Ethics |

Because media can strongly influence public opinion and behaviour, there are official regulators like Ofcom (UK) that set standards for content, accuracy and taste. Age ratings for films and games protect younger audiences from unsuitable material. Ethical considerations in media include truthfulness, privacy, stereotyping and the responsible portrayal of sensitive issues. In your studies, you might debate whether media texts have gone ‘too far’ or whether they balance freedom of speech with social responsibility. Reflecting on this helps you develop your own moral compass as a media consumer and potential future producer.
