1. Atoms and Elements |

An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can exist. It consists of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons. All matter is made of atoms.

An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. Each element has a unique chemical symbol, such as H for hydrogen and O for oxygen. There are about 100 different elements found naturally.

Mnemonic for atomic structure: ‘Proton Positives, Neutral Neutrons, Electron Negatives.’ Remember that protons are positively charged, neutrons have no charge, and electrons are negatively charged. The number of protons determines the element.

To recall the first nine elements in order, use: ‘Happy Henry Likes Beer But Could Not Obtain Food’ (H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F). This connects hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine.

Happy Henry Likes Beer But Could Not Obtain Food’(H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F),分别对应氢、氦、锂、铍、硼、碳、氮、氧、氟。

2. Compounds and Molecules |

A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together. Compounds have a fixed composition and can be represented by a chemical formula, such as H₂O for water and CO₂ for carbon dioxide.

A molecule is a group of atoms bonded together. It can be an element (like O₂) or a compound (like H₂O). All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds.

To quickly identify a compound, look for two or more capital letters in the formula, indicating different elements. For example, NaCl contains sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl).

Names of compounds often end in ‘-ide’ when they contain two elements (e.g. sodium chloride, magnesium oxide). When three or more elements with oxygen are present, names often end in ‘-ate’ (e.g. copper sulfate, calcium carbonate).

3. Mixtures and Pure Substances |

A pure substance consists of only one type of element or compound. It has a fixed melting point and boiling point. Impurities lower the melting point and widen the melting range.

A mixture contains two or more different substances that are not chemically joined. The parts of a mixture can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, distillation or chromatography.

Air is a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂). Seawater is a mixture of water, dissolved salts and gases. These everyday examples help you remember that mixtures can have variable compositions.

Solubility is a key property for separating mixtures. Soluble solids dissolve in a solvent to form a solution. Insoluble solids do not dissolve. Remember: ‘Salt vanishes in water, sand sits at the bottom.’

4. Physical and Chemical Changes |

A physical change alters the state or appearance of a substance but does not produce a new chemical. Examples include melting ice, boiling water and dissolving sugar. Physical changes are usually reversible.

A chemical change, or chemical reaction, results in the formation of one or more new substances. Signs of a chemical change include colour change, temperature change, formation of a precipitate, or gas produced without heating.

Burning magnesium ribbon to form white magnesium oxide is a permanent chemical change. Rusting iron and cooking an egg are also chemical reactions that cannot be easily reversed.

Use the mnemonic ‘Can Tim Play Guitar?’ to recall signs of a chemical reaction: Colour change, Temperature change, Precipitation, Gas given off.

使用口诀’Can Tim Play Guitar?’记住化学反应的迹象:Colour change(颜色变化),Temperature change(温度变化),Precipitation(沉淀),Gas given off(气体释放)。

5. The Periodic Table |

The periodic table lists all known elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements are arranged in periods (horizontal rows) and groups (vertical columns). Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties.

Group 1 contains the alkali metals, which are soft, reactive and must be stored under oil. Group 7 contains the halogens, reactive non-metals. Group 0 (or 8) contains the noble gases, which are unreactive.

To remember the first 20 elements, use this story: ‘Happy Harry He Likes Beer But Can Not Obtain Food; Naughty Maggie Always Sings Pop Songs. Clearly Arguing, King Calvin.’ It gives H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca.

Happy Harry He Likes Beer But Can Not Obtain Food; Naughty Maggie Always Sings Pop Songs. Clearly Arguing, King Calvin.’

Metals are on the left and centre of the table, non-metals on the right. A stepped line separates them. Silicon is a metalloid that sits near the boundary.

6. Acids, Alkalis and Bases |

An acid is a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃).

A base is a substance that can neutralise an acid to form a salt and water. An alkali is a soluble base that releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a common alkali.

Litmus paper turns red in acid and blue in alkali. Use the phrase ‘Red for acid, Blue for base’ to link the colours. Always add acid to water when diluting, never the reverse.

Vinegar (ethanoic acid), lemon juice (citric acid) and fizzy drinks (carbonic acid) are everyday acids. Toothpaste and baking soda are mild alkalis. Linking vocabulary to household items makes revision stick.

7. The pH Scale | pH值量表

The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. It ranges from 0 to 14. A pH less than 7 is acidic, a pH of 7 is neutral, and a pH greater than 7 is alkaline.

Universal indicator is a mixture of dyes that shows a range of colours depending on pH. Red/orange indicates strong acid, green is neutral, and dark purple indicates strong alkali.

Remember the pattern: ‘0-6 acidic, 7 is neutral heaven, 8-14 alkaline.’ The stronger the acid, the lower the pH. The stronger the alkali, the higher the pH.

Pure water has a pH of 7. Rainwater can be slightly acidic (pH ≈ 5.6) due to dissolved carbon dioxide forming carbonic acid. This natural example reinforces why temperature and dissolved gases affect pH.

8. Neutralisation and Salts |

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and an alkali (or base) to produce a salt and water. The word equation is: acid + alkali → salt + water. The ionic equation is: H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O.

The name of a salt comes from the acid and the metal in the base. Hydrochloric acid produces chlorides, sulfuric acid produces sulfates, and nitric acid produces nitrates.

For example, hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide → sodium chloride + water. The salt sodium chloride is table salt. The reaction is exothermic, meaning it releases heat.

To memorise common salts: ‘Chlorides from HCl, sulfates from H₂SO₄, nitrates from HNO₃.’ Picture ‘Charlie the Hydro-Chloride’ and ‘Sally the Sulfate’ as characters to lock the patterns in your memory.

9. Separating Mixtures |

Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid. It uses filter paper with tiny pores that allow the liquid (filtrate) to pass through while trapping the solid residue.

Evaporation recovers a soluble solid from a solution. The solution is heated so the solvent evaporates, leaving the solid behind. This works for salt from seawater or copper sulfate crystals.

Distillation separates a liquid from a solution or a mixture of liquids with different boiling points. The vapour is cooled and condensed back into liquid. Simple distillation is used to obtain pure water from ink or salt solution.

Chromatography separates small amounts of dissolved substances, such as ink dyes. Substances move up the paper at different speeds. Use the phrase ‘spotted, dipped, left to climb’ to remember the method.

10. Key Reaction Terminology |

In a chemical reaction, the starting substances are called reactants, and the new substances formed are called products. The arrow (→) points from reactants to products.

Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings, usually causing a temperature rise. Combustion and neutralisation are exothermic. Endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings, often causing a temperature drop. Thermal decomposition and photosynthesis are endothermic.

Think of ‘exo- means exit’ (energy exits) and ‘endo- means enter’ (energy enters). This simple word link helps you never confuse the two terms.

A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up. Biological catalysts in living organisms are called enzymes. Catalysts lower the activation energy needed.

The Law of Conservation of Mass states that the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. Atoms are rearranged, not created or destroyed. Represent this with the balanced concept: ‘Mass in = Mass out.’
