These misconceptions often persist because they feel intuitive or because everyday language differs from scientific language. This article tackles the most common misunderstandings head-on, explaining exactly where the confusion lies and how to correct it with clear, accurate science.

Misconception: Breathing and respiration are exactly the same thing.

Correction: Breathing is the physical process of moving air in and out of the lungs – inhaling and exhaling. Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens inside every living cell, releasing energy from glucose. You can breathe without respiration happening in your body’s cells, but all cells must respire to stay alive.

Misconception: Plants only photosynthesise during the day and only respire at night.

Correction: Plants respire constantly – day and night – because their cells need a continuous supply of energy. 3. Digestion and Absorption | 消化与吸收

Correction: The stomach mainly churns food and mixes it with acid and enzymes to begin protein digestion. Very little absorption happens here. The small intestine is the primary site for absorption, thanks to its enormous surface area created by millions of tiny finger-like villi.

Misconception: The arrow points from the predator to the prey, or shows ‘who eats whom’ in reverse.

Correction: In a food chain, the arrow always points in the direction of energy flow – from the organism being eaten to the organism that eats it. For example, ‘grass → rabbit → fox’ means energy flows from grass to rabbit and then to fox.

Misconception: Every plant cell contains chloroplasts.

Correction: Chloroplasts are only found in parts of the plant that photosynthesise, such as leaves and green stems. Root cells, for example, live underground and do not require chloroplasts. Some specialised cells, like root hair cells, lack chloroplasts entirely.

The body uses only a fraction of the oxygen we inhale with each breath, so the air we breathe out is still rich in oxygen – that is why mouth-to-mouth resuscitation works.

8. Arteries and Veins | 动脉与静脉

Misconception: Arteries always carry oxygenated blood, and veins always carry deoxygenated blood.

Correction: Most arteries do carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, and most veins return deoxygenated blood. The names refer to the direction of blood flow relative to the heart, not oxygen content.

Misconception: The heart is located on the left side of the chest.

Correction: The heart sits in the centre of the chest, behind the breastbone (sternum), between the lungs. Its apex (bottom tip) tilts to the left, which is why we feel the heartbeat more strongly there. The heart is not completely on the left.

10. Menstrual Cycle Regularity | 月经周期的规律性

Misconception: Every girl or woman has a 28-day menstrual cycle, exactly the same every month.

Correction: The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary widely – anywhere from 21 to 35 days is considered normal for teenagers. Stress, diet, exercise and illness can all change cycle length from month to month.

纠正:月经周期的平均长度约为28天,但实际差异很大——青少年的周期在21到35天之间都属正常。压力、饮食、锻炼和疾病都可能导致每个月的周期长度发生变化。

Ovulation, not menstruation, is the central event of the cycle. The body prepares the uterus lining for a possible pregnancy, and if fertilisation does not occur, the lining is shed.

排卵而非月经,才是整个周期的核心事件。身体为可能的怀孕准备好子宫内膜,如果卵子没有受精,这层内膜就会脱落引起月经。
