📚 Summer Bridging Course: Year 8 SQA French | 暑期预习与衔接课程:Year 8 SQA 法语

Moving from Primary 7 into Year 8 (S2 in Scotland) is an exciting step, and your French journey is about to become more structured and rewarding. This summer bridging guide covers the essential vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills you will need to feel confident from the very first lesson. Whether you are reviewing what you learned last year or starting to build new knowledge, working through the topics here little by little over the holidays will help you arrive in class ready to speak, listen, read and write in French with greater ease. The SQA Modern Languages framework at this level expects learners to express simple opinions, describe people and routines, and understand short texts on familiar themes—all of which are woven into the sections below.

1. Getting Started: Greetings and Introductions | 入门:问候与自我介绍

Every French conversation begins with a greeting, so it is worth practising these until they feel automatic. Start with ‘Bonjour’ (hello / good day) during the daytime and ‘Bonsoir’ (good evening) after about 6 p.m. For friends, you can use ‘Salut’ (hi). When you meet someone for the first time, you can say ‘Je m’appelle…’ (My name is…) and ask ‘Comment tu t’appelles ?’ (What’s your name?). It is also useful to know how to say ‘Ça va ?’ (How’s it going?) and respond with ‘Ça va bien, merci’ (I’m fine, thanks) or ‘Pas mal’ (Not bad). Remember that French people often shake hands or do ‘la bise’ (cheek kisses), but in a classroom a simple wave and ‘Bonjour’ is perfect.

Key phrases to practise aloud:
– Bonjour, je m’appelle Marie. Et toi ?
– Salut ! Ça va ? — Oui, ça va bien, merci. Et toi ?
– Comment tu t’appelles ? — Je m’appelle Alex.
– Au revoir ! À bientôt !

需要大声练习的关键句子:
– 你好,我叫玛丽。你呢?
– 嗨!你好吗?——我很好,谢谢。你呢?
– 你叫什么名字?——我叫亚历克斯。
– 再见!回头见!

2. Numbers and Dates | 数字与日期

Being confident with numbers from 1 to 31 will allow you to tell the date, give your age, and understand prices. Start by learning the numbers in small groups: 1–10 (un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix), then 11–20 (onze, douze, treize, quatorze, quinze, seize, dix-sept, dix-huit, dix-neuf, vingt), and finally 21–31 (vingt et un, vingt-deux, …, trente et un). Notice the pattern: ‘vingt et un’ uses ‘et’, but ‘vingt-deux’ does not. Once you know the numbers, you can say your birthday: ‘Mon anniversaire est le 3 mars’ (My birthday is on 3rd March) or ‘J’ai douze ans’ (I am twelve years old). Days of the week (lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche) and months (janvier, février, mars, etc.) are equally important.

Quick practice table:

Number French Number French
1 un 16 seize
2 deux 17 dix-sept
3 trois 18 dix-huit
4 quatre 19 dix-neuf
5 cinq 20 vingt
6 six 21 vingt et un
7 sept 22 vingt-deux
8 huit 23 vingt-trois
9 neuf 24 vingt-quatre
10 dix 30 trente
11 onze 31 trente et un

3. Colours and Descriptions | 颜色与描述

Describing things around you is a core skill in early French. Start with the basic colours: rouge (red), bleu (blue), vert (green), jaune (yellow), noir (black), blanc (white), orange (orange), rose (pink), violet (purple), gris (grey) and marron (brown). Remember that colours are adjectives and in French most adjectives change their spelling to match the noun they describe. For example, a red pen is ‘un stylo rouge’ (masculine singular), but a red flower is ‘une fleur rouge’ (feminine singular) – here ‘rouge’ does not change. However, for colours like ‘vert’, you will see ‘verte’ in the feminine: ‘un livre vert’ but ‘une pomme verte’. Build simple sentences such as ‘J’ai un sac bleu’ (I have a blue bag) or ‘Ma chambre est rose’ (My bedroom is pink). You can also use adjectives like grand(e) (big), petit(e) (small), beau/belle (beautiful), moche (ugly) and joli(e) (pretty) to describe objects and people.

描述身边的事物是早期法语学习的核心技能。先从基本颜色开始:rouge(红色)、bleu(蓝色)、vert(绿色)、jaune(黄色)、noir(黑色)、blanc(白色)、orange(橙色)、rose(粉色)、violet(紫色)、gris(灰色)和 marron(棕色)。 还可以用 grand(e)(大的)、petit(e)(小的)、beau/belle(漂亮的)、moche(丑的)和 joli(e)(好看的)等形容词来描述物品和人物。

4. Family and Pets | 家庭与宠物

Talking about your family is one of the most natural topics in any language. Key words include: ma mère (my mum), mon père (my dad), mon frère (my brother), ma sœur (my sister), ma grand-mère (my grandmother), mon grand-père (my grandfather), mon oncle (my uncle), ma tante (my aunt), mon cousin / ma cousine (my cousin). Notice the use of ‘mon’ with masculine nouns and ‘ma’ with feminine ones – but before a vowel, ‘ma’ becomes ‘mon’, so we say ‘mon amie’ for a female friend. The verb ‘avoir’ (to have) is essential here: ‘J’ai un frère’ (I have a brother) or ‘Je n’ai pas de sœur’ (I don’t have a sister). For pets, learn un chien (dog), un chat (cat), un poisson (fish), un hamster (hamster), un oiseau (bird) and un lapin (rabbit). Combine with adjectives to describe them: ‘Mon chien est grand et noir.’ (My dog is big and black.)

谈论家庭在任何语言中都是最自然的话题之一。关键词汇包括:ma mère(我的妈妈)、mon père(我的爸爸)、mon frère(我的兄弟)、ma sœur(我的姐妹)、ma grand-mère(我的祖母)、mon grand-père(我的祖父)、mon oncle(我的叔叔/舅舅)、ma tante(我的姨妈/姑妈)、mon cousin / ma cousine(我的堂/表兄弟/姐妹)。注意在阳性名词前用“mon”,在阴性名词前用“ma”——但当名词以元音开头时,“ma”要变成“mon”,比如“mon amie”(我的一位女性朋友)。动词“avoir”(有)在这里非常重要:“J’ai un frère”(我有一个兄弟),或者“Je n’ai pas de sœur”(我没有姐妹)。关于宠物,要学习 un chien(狗)、un chat(猫)、un poisson(鱼)、un hamster(仓鼠)、un oiseau(鸟)和 un lapin(兔子)。可以结合形容词来描述它们:“Mon chien est grand et noir.”(我的狗又大又黑。)

5. School Life | 学校生活

Year 8 French lessons will often revolve around school, so it helps to know the vocabulary for subjects, opinions and your timetable. Subjects: le français (French), l’anglais (English), les maths (Maths), l’histoire (History), la géographie (Geography), les sciences (Science), l’EPS (PE), la musique (Music), l’art (Art), l’informatique (ICT). To give an opinion, use ‘J’aime’ (I like), ‘J’adore’ (I love), ‘Je n’aime pas’ (I don’t like), ‘Je déteste’ (I hate). For example: ‘J’adore les sciences parce que c’est intéressant.’ (I love Science because it is interesting.) Learn the days of the week and how to say the time so you can describe your timetable: ‘Le lundi, j’ai maths à neuf heures.’ (On Mondays, I have Maths at 9 o’clock.) Useful classroom phrases include: ‘Je ne comprends pas’ (I don’t understand), ‘Répétez, s’il vous plaît’ (Repeat, please) and ‘Est-ce que je peux aller aux toilettes ?’ (May I go to the toilet?).

八年级的法语课经常会围绕学校展开,所以提前熟悉科目、观点表达和课程表的词汇很有帮助。科目方面:le français(法语)、l’anglais(英语)、les maths(数学)、l’histoire(历史)、la géographie(地理)、les sciences(科学)、l’EPS(体育)、la musique(音乐)、l’art(艺术)、l’informatique(信息与通信技术)。

6. Hobbies and Free Time | 爱好与闲暇时光

Being able to say what you like doing in your free time opens the door to real conversations. Start with ‘J’aime’ + infinitive verb: J’aime jouer au foot (I like playing football), J’aime écouter de la musique (I like listening to music), J’aime regarder la télé (I like watching TV), J’aime lire (I like reading), J’aime danser (I like dancing), J’aime nager (I like swimming). You can also use ‘Je fais’ (I do) for activities: Je fais du vélo (I go cycling), Je fais du sport (I do sport), Je fais de la natation (I go swimming). Express how often you do these activities with: tous les jours (every day), souvent (often), quelquefois (sometimes), rarement (rarely), ne … jamais (never). For instance: ‘Je joue souvent aux jeux vidéo’ (I often play video games) or ‘Je ne fais jamais de skate’ (I never skateboard). If you’re learning a musical instrument, you can say ‘Je joue du piano’ (I play the piano) or ‘Je joue de la guitare’ (I play the guitar).

可以用以下词语表达做这些活动的频率:tous les jours(每天),souvent(经常),quelquefois(有时),rarement(很少),ne … jamais(从不)。例如:“Je joue souvent aux jeux vidéo”(我经常打电子游戏),或者“Je ne fais jamais de skate”(我从不玩滑板)。如果你在学乐器,可以說“Je joue du piano”(我弹钢琴)或者“Je joue de la guitare”(我弹吉他)。

7. Food and Drink | 食物与饮料

Food is fun to talk about and very useful when you imagine ordering in a French café. Key nouns: le pain (bread), le fromage (cheese), le jambon (ham), les frites (chips), la glace (ice cream), les fruits (fruit), les légumes (vegetables), le gâteau (cake), le chocolat (chocolate), la pizza (pizza). For drinks: l’eau (water), le jus d’orange (orange juice), le coca (cola), le lait (milk), le thé (tea), le café (coffee). To say what you eat and drink, use ‘Je mange’ (I eat) and ‘Je bois’ (I drink). You can share preferences: ‘J’aime les pâtes’ (I like pasta), ‘Je n’aime pas les champignons’ (I don’t like mushrooms), ‘Ma boisson préférée est le jus de pomme’ (My favourite drink is apple juice). The expression ‘Je voudrais’ (I would like) is essential for polite requests: ‘Je voudrais un croissant, s’il vous plaît’ (I would like a croissant, please). Practise ordering a simple breakfast or snack out loud.

谈论食物很有趣,而且当你想象在法国咖啡馆点餐时也非常实用。关键名词:le pain(面包),le fromage(奶酪),le jambon(火腿),les frites(炸薯条),la glace(冰淇淋),les fruits(水果),les légumes(蔬菜),le gâteau(蛋糕),le chocolat(巧克力),la pizza(披萨)。饮料方面:l’eau(水),le jus d’orange(橙汁),le coca(可乐),le lait(牛奶),le thé(茶),le café(咖啡)。

8. Grammar Foundation: Present Tense of -er Verbs | 语法基础:-er 动词现在时

Most French verbs end in -er, and getting the present tense pattern right early will make a huge difference. The basic rule: take the infinitive, remove -er, and add the endings: je -e, tu -es, il/elle -e, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ent. Take ‘parler’ (to speak) as a model: je parle, tu parles, il/elle parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils/elles parlent. Notice that the ‘je’ and ‘il/elle’ forms sound the same, but the spelling is important for writing. Other useful -er verbs to practise: aimer (to love/like), détester (to hate), habiter (to live), écouter (to listen), regarder (to watch), jouer (to play), manger (to eat – note ‘nous mangeons’ for the extra ‘e’ to keep the soft ‘g’ sound), and travailler (to work). A key SQA skill is being able to change the subject: ‘Je joue au tennis’ → ‘Mon frère joue au tennis’, then ‘Mes sœurs jouent au tennis’. Always link the verb ending to the subject.

其他值得练习的常用 -er 动词还有:aimer(喜欢)、détester(讨厌)、habiter(居住)、écouter(听)、regarder(看)、jouer(玩/演奏)、manger(吃——注意“nous mangeons”多了一个“e”以保持软音“g”的发音)和 travailler(工作)。SQA 的一个关键技能是能够变换主语:“Je joue au tennis” → “Mon frère joue au tennis”,再到“Mes sœurs jouent au tennis”。始终要把动词词尾与主语对应起来。

9. Key Irregular Verbs: Avoir and Être | 重要不规则动词:avoir 与 être

Two verbs you simply cannot do without are avoir (to have) and être (to be). They are irregular, so you need to memorise them as they are used constantly. Avoir: j’ai, tu as, il/elle/on a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont. Être: je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont. Avoir is used for age (J’ai douze ans), for expressing possessions (Il a un stylo bleu), and in many expressions like ‘avoir faim’ (to be hungry), ‘avoir soif’ (to be thirsty), ‘avoir chaud’ (to be hot) and ‘avoir froid’ (to be cold). Être is used for identity (Je suis élève – I am a pupil), nationality (Il est écossais – He is Scottish), and descriptions (Elle est grande et gentille – She is tall and kind). Both verbs also serve as helping verbs in the past tense later, so building a solid foundation now will pay off. Create flashcards and test yourself until the forms come to you without hesitation.

有两个动词你绝对离不开,那就是 avoir(有)和 être(是)。

10. Building Sentences: Negation and Questions | 造句:否定与疑问

Once you can make simple affirmative sentences, the next step is to say what you don’t do and to ask questions. To make a sentence negative in French, wrap ‘ne’ and ‘pas’ around the verb. In spoken French, the ‘ne’ is often omitted, but for writing and exams you should keep it. Example: ‘Je ne regarde pas la télé’ (I don’t watch TV). If the verb begins with a vowel, ‘ne’ becomes ‘n”: ‘Il n’aime pas le café’ (He doesn’t like coffee). With the expression ‘ne … jamais’, you can say you never do something: ‘Je ne fume jamais’ (I never smoke). To ask questions, you have three common methods: 1) Simple intonation – raise your voice at the end: ‘Tu aimes le foot ?’ (You like football?). 2) Using ‘Est-ce que’ at the start: ‘Est-ce que tu aimes le foot ?’ 3) Inversion (more formal): ‘Aimes-tu le foot ?’ At Year 8 level, the intonation and ‘Est-ce que’ forms are most useful. Practise turning statements into questions and negatives until they feel natural.

Final Tips for Summer Practice | 暑期练习小贴士

The most effective bridging work is done in short, regular sessions. Try 15–20 minutes a day rather than a long block once a week. Use free apps, watch French cartoons with English subtitles, label items around your house with their French names, and teach a family member a few phrases. Keep a simple French journal where you write one sentence a day, like ‘Aujourd’hui, il fait beau’ (Today the weather is nice) or ‘Je mange une pomme’ (I eat an apple). Record yourself speaking and listen back to improve your pronunciation. All the topics above will be revisited and extended in Year 8, so your goal is not to be perfect but to walk into class with the confidence that you recognise key words and can form basic sentences.
