1. What is Statistics? |

Statistics is the study of collecting, organising, presenting, analysing, and interpreting data. Data simply means information, often in the form of numbers or categories. Every time you check the weather, look at sports scores, or read survey results, you are using statistics.

In Year 7, statistics helps you answer questions like: ‘What is the most popular fruit in our class?’ or ‘How much time do students spend on homework?’ You will learn to turn raw data into clear stories.

2. Types of Data |

Before working with data, you need to know the two main types. Qualitative data describes qualities or categories – for example, eye colour (blue, brown, green) or favourite subject (Maths, Science, Art). Quantitative data describes quantities or numbers – for example, height in centimetres or test scores.

Quantitative data can be further split into discrete data (counted, like the number of pets) and continuous data (measured, like the mass of a bag). Understanding these types helps you choose the right graph and analysis.

Data Type Example
Qualitative Favourite colour, type of car
Quantitative – Discrete Number of books in a bag, shoe size
Quantitative – Continuous Length of a leaf, volume of milk

3. Collecting Data |

Good statistics start with careful data collection. You can collect data through surveys, observations, or experiments. For example, you might ask each classmate: ‘What is your favourite snack?’ and record their answers. This is a survey.

It is important to have a clear question and a fair way to gather responses. Using tally marks is a simple method to record data as you go. Tally marks are vertical strokes grouped in fives: ꞏꞏꞏꞏ for 4, and ŧ for 5. This makes counting easy later.

  • Decide on your question (e.g. ‘How do you travel to school?’)

  • List possible answers (walk, bike, bus, car)

  • Use a tally chart to collect responses

4. Frequency Tables | 频率表

A frequency table organises data by showing each category and how often it appears (the frequency). It helps you see patterns at a glance. Below is a frequency table for the favourite fruits of 20 students:

Fruit Tally Frequency
Apple ŧ Ŧ 6
Banana ŧ 5
Orange ŧ ꞏꞏ 7
Grapes ꞏꞏ 2

From this table, we can immediately see that orange is the most popular fruit and grapes the least. Frequency tables are the foundation for many graphs you will draw in Year 7.

5. Bar Charts and Pictograms |

Once you have a frequency table, you can draw a bar chart. Each bar represents a category, and the height of the bar shows the frequency. Bars must be equally spaced and should not touch (unless the data is continuous, but here we focus on separate categories).

Always label the axes: the horizontal axis (x-axis) for categories, and the vertical axis (y-axis) for frequency. Give the chart a clear title, such as ‘Favourite Fruits of Year 7 Students’.

A pictogram uses pictures to represent data. Each picture stands for a certain number of items. For example, one apple symbol could represent 2 students. Pictograms are visual and fun, but you must include a key to show what each symbol means.

6. Averages: Mean, Median, Mode |

Averages summarise a data set with one typical value. In Year 7 you will meet three measures: mode (the most frequent value), median (the middle value when data is ordered), and mean (the ‘fair share’ value).

The mode is easy to find: just look for the highest frequency. For the fruit data, the mode is Orange with frequency 7.

To find the median, put the numbers in order. For an odd list like 3, 5, 7, the median is 5. For an even list like 2, 4, 6, 8, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers: (4+6)÷2 = 5.

The mean is calculated by adding all values and dividing by how many there are:

Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Number of values)

Example: the mean of 4, 7, 9, 6 is (4+7+9+6) ÷ 4 = 26 ÷ 4 = 6.5.

7. Range and Comparing Data |

The range tells you how spread out the data is. It is the difference between the largest and the smallest value. For the numbers 4, 7, 9, 6, the largest is 9, the smallest is 4, so range = 9 − 4 = 5.

When comparing two sets of data, look at both an average and the range. For example, if Class A has a mean test score of 72 with a range of 10, and Class B has a mean of 72 with a range of 30, then Class A’s scores are more consistent, even though the averages are the same.

Always try to use the mean or median together with the range to give a full picture. The mode can also help show the most typical category.

8. Interpreting Charts and Data |

Drawing a chart is only half the job. In statistics you must also interpret what the chart shows. Ask questions like: Which category is the least popular? Are there any surprises? What could the data be used for?

For instance, a bar chart of how students travel to school might reveal that most students walk. The school could use this information to improve walking routes or run a road safety campaign.

Always read the title, the axis labels, and the key (if there is one). Do not jump to conclusions – the data might have limitations, such as a small sample size or biased questions.

9. Summer Practice Ideas |

To stay sharp over the summer, try these simple statistical activities:

  • Keep a weather log for two weeks: record the daily temperature and weather type, then make a bar chart of sunny, cloudy, and rainy days.

  • Survey your family or friends about their favourite hobbies and display the results in a frequency table and pictogram.

  • Collect data on the number of pages in books on a shelf. Find the mean, median, mode, and range. Which average best describes the typical book length?

  • Watch a sport and record scores or times. Compare the performances of two players using averages.

All these tasks build your skills in collecting, organising, and interpreting data – and they are fun!

10. Bridging to Year 8 Statistics | 衔接Year 8统计

Next year, you will build on what you learn now. In Year 8, you might draw pie charts, line graphs, and scatter graphs. You will also start to think about probability – using numbers to describe how likely events are.

You will also deepen your understanding of averages, perhaps learning about grouped frequency tables and estimating the mean from grouped data. The range will lead you to more advanced measures of spread, like the interquartile range.

By doing a little practice this summer, you will walk into Year 7 statistics class feeling prepared and curious. Remember: statistics is not just about numbers – it is about asking good questions and finding evidence to answer them.
