1. Why Study Early Modern Britain? |

The early modern period (c.1485–1750) was a time of dramatic transformation. It saw England break from Roman Catholicism, the rise of Parliament, the execution of a king and the creation of a constitutional monarchy. Understanding this era helps us see how key British institutions and ideas of freedom developed.

Moreover, the struggles of the Tudors and Stuarts reveal common themes: the tension between divine right and representative government, the power of religion in everyday life and the impact of propaganda. These themes remain relevant in today’s world.

Year 8 History also asks you to think like a historian – to weigh evidence, question sources and explain why events turned out the way they did. By starting your summer preparation now, you will sharpen these thinking skills early.

2. Tudor Power and Propaganda |

The Tudor dynasty was founded by Henry VII after his victory at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. His claim to the throne was weak, so he worked tirelessly to strengthen his position. He married Elizabeth of York to unite the warring houses of Lancaster and York and used royal portraits to project a calm, kingly image.

His son, Henry VIII, took royal power to new heights. He centralised authority, reduced the influence of nobles and used magnificent palaces like Hampton Court to display his wealth. Portraits of Henry VIII were filled with symbols of power – broad shoulders, richly jewelled clothing and a dominant stance – all carefully designed to impress.

Propaganda was not just for the elite. Coins, seals and church decorations all spread royal messages. People who could not read still understood the visual language of loyalty and fear.

3. The Reformation and Dissolution of the Monasteries |

Henry VIII’s need for a male heir triggered one of the most dramatic breaks in English history. When the Pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Henry took matters into his own hands. In 1534, the Act of Supremacy declared the king ‘Supreme Head of the Church of England’, severing ties with Rome.

With his new authority, Henry dissolved the monasteries – around 800 religious houses across England and Wales. The Crown seized their land, treasures and income. This not only filled Henry’s treasury but also rewarded loyal nobles with formerly monastic estates.

For ordinary people, the dissolution meant the loss of a vital safety net: schools, hospitals and charity for the poor operated by monasteries disappeared almost overnight. The religious landscape was permanently altered, and many former monastic buildings fell into ruin.

4. Elizabeth I: Golden Age and Threats |

Elizabeth I inherited a divided nation in 1558 and managed to rule for 45 years. She skilfully navigated religious conflict by establishing the ‘Elizabethan Settlement’, a compromise that hoped to unite Catholics and Protestants under a moderate Church of England. Public allegiance to the Crown mattered more than private belief.

The Elizabethan era is often called a ‘Golden Age’. It saw the flourishing of English literature with figures like William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. English sailors, including Francis Drake, challenged Spanish superiority at sea, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 became a defining national triumph.

Yet the queen’s life was never safe. Catholic plots aimed at replacing her with Mary, Queen of Scots, a claimant with a strong Catholic following. Elizabeth’s eventual decision to execute Mary in 1587 showed how dangerous succession crises could be.

5. James I and the Divine Right of Kings |

When Elizabeth died childless in 1603, her cousin James VI of Scotland became James I of England. He arrived with a firm belief in the ‘Divine Right of Kings’ – the idea that monarchs were chosen by God and answerable only to God, not to any earthly authority such as Parliament.

James’s relationship with Parliament soon soured. He needed taxes to fund his court and foreign ambitions, but MPs wanted to debate royal policies before granting funds. Religious tensions also flared. The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a plan by Catholic conspirators to blow up the king and Parliament, shocked the nation and led to harsher anti-Catholic laws.

Although James avoided outright war with Parliament, his repeated clashes over money and privilege sowed seeds of conflict that would grow under his son.

6. Charles I and the Road to Civil War |

Charles I shared his father’s belief in absolute royal power and took it further. He married a French Catholic princess, Henrietta Maria, alarming many Protestant subjects. When Parliament refused to grant him the money he wanted, he dissolved it in 1629 and ruled for 11 years without calling any Parliament – a period known as ‘Personal Rule’.

Charles raised money by exploiting ancient taxes such as ‘ship money’, originally a coastal levy, and extended it to inland areas. This caused widespread resentment. The turning point came when he attempted to impose his religious reforms on Scotland, provoking a rebellion. Desperate for funds to fight the Scots, he was forced to recall Parliament in 1640.

Relations now broke down completely. In 1642, Charles raised his royal standard in Nottingham, declaring war on his own Parliament. The English Civil War had begun, pitting Royalists (‘Cavaliers’) against Parliamentarians (‘Roundheads’).

7. Republic and Protectorate: Cromwell’s Rule |

The Parliamentarian forces, strengthened by the New Model Army under Oliver Cromwell, eventually defeated the king. In 1649, Charles I was put on trial, convicted of treason and executed outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall. This act was unprecedented and sent shockwaves across Europe.

England was declared a republic – the Commonwealth. However, real power lay with Cromwell, who became ‘Lord Protector’ in 1653. His Puritan rule brought strict moral codes: Christmas celebrations were banned, theatres closed and dancing discouraged. Many ordinary people found this repressive.

Cromwell’s death in 1658 left a power vacuum, and the republic quickly faltered. By 1660, the monarchy was restored – it became clear that the nation could not agree on a lasting alternative.

8. Restoration and Glorious Revolution |

Charles II returned to England in 1660 amid celebrations. The ‘Merry Monarch’ reopened theatres, revived sports and brought flamboyance back to court. Yet the Restoration was not a return to unchecked royal power; Parliament kept control over finances and some religious policies.
