📚 Year 8 AQA Politics: Summer Preparation & Bridging Course | Year 8 AQA

Politics shapes every part of our lives, from the rules in school to decisions made in Parliament. This summer bridging course introduces you to the key ideas, institutions and skills you will encounter in AQA Citizenship and Politics, helping you build a strong foundation before Year 9. By exploring democracy, power, rights and active citizenship, you will develop the knowledge and critical thinking needed to engage with the world around you.

1. Why Study Politics? |

Politics is about how people make decisions in groups – whether in a classroom, a council or a country. It affects the laws we follow, the taxes we pay and the services we use, such as the NHS and schools. Understanding politics helps you make sense of current events and prepares you to contribute to your community.

Studying politics also develops transferable skills: critical thinking, debating, evaluating evidence and understanding different perspectives. These skills are valuable across all subjects and in everyday life, empowering you to become an informed and active citizen.

2. The Meaning of Democracy |

Democracy comes from the Greek words ‘demos’ (people) and ‘kratos’ (rule). In a direct democracy, citizens vote on every decision themselves; in a representative democracy – the system used in the UK – we elect representatives to make decisions on our behalf. Regular, free and fair elections are essential to make sure those representatives truly speak for the people.

Key democratic values include the rule of law (everyone must follow the law, including those in power), protection of human rights, freedom of speech and a free press. Without these, a country cannot be truly democratic, even if it holds elections.

3. The UK Political System: Monarch and Parliament |

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. This means the Monarch (currently King Charles III) is the Head of State, but his powers are limited by law and convention. He opens Parliament each year, gives Royal Assent to bills and meets the Prime Minister regularly, but he does not run the government.

Parliament is the supreme law-making body and has three parts: the Monarch, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The House of Commons is made up of 650 Members of Parliament (MPs), each elected by a constituency. It is the most powerful chamber, controlling taxation and scrutinising the government.

The House of Lords is unelected and consists of life peers, bishops and hereditary peers. Its role is to revise and delay legislation, offering expert advice. It cannot block bills permanently, but it improves the quality of laws through detailed scrutiny.

4. Government and the Prime Minister |

The government is formed by the political party with a majority in the House of Commons. Its job is to run the country by proposing new laws, managing public services such as healthcare, education and defence, and setting the annual budget. Ministers head government departments and are accountable to Parliament.

The Prime Minister is the leader of the largest party and the head of the government. They chair the Cabinet (a group of senior ministers), represent the UK internationally and make key appointments. Although the Prime Minister holds significant power, they must maintain the confidence of the Commons to stay in office.

5. Elections and Voting Systems |

General elections in the UK are held at least every five years. On polling day, eligible voters aged 18 and over cast a ballot for the candidate they want to be their local MP. The candidate who receives the most votes in each constituency wins; this is known as the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system.

FPTP often produces a strong, single-party government and a clear link between MPs and their constituencies. However, it can result in a party winning many seats without a majority of the national vote, and smaller parties may struggle to gain representation. Understanding this system is crucial for evaluating how fair and representative UK elections really are.

6. Political Parties and Their Values |

Political parties bring together people with similar beliefs to contest elections and shape public policy. The Conservative Party traditionally supports free markets, individual enterprise and maintaining established institutions. It is often described as centre-right.

The Labour Party was founded to represent the interests of working people and tends to prioritise social justice, public ownership of key services and stronger workers’ rights. It is generally seen as centre-left. The Liberal Democrats advocate for civil liberties, environmental responsibility and electoral reform, occupying the centre ground.

Before elections, parties publish manifestos outlining their promises. Comparing these documents helps voters decide. Learning about party values now will give you a head start when analysing political debates in your GCSE studies.

7. How Laws Are Made | 法律如何制定

A proposal for a new law is called a bill. Most bills begin in the House of Commons, where they go through a series of stages. After a First Reading (formal introduction), the Second Reading provides a debate and vote on the bill’s main principles. Then a Public Bill Committee examines the bill line by line, suggesting amendments.

The bill returns to the full Commons for the Report Stage and Third Reading before being sent to the House of Lords. The Lords can propose further changes, but if they reject a bill, the Commons can pass it again after a year without their consent – a power limited by the Parliament Acts. Once both Houses agree, the Monarch gives Royal Assent, and the bill becomes an Act of Parliament, a law that everyone must follow.

8. Rights, Freedoms and the Law |

Rights are fundamental protections that belong to every individual. In the UK, many rights are safeguarded by the Human Rights Act 1998, which incorporated the European Convention on Human Rights into domestic law. These include the right to life, freedom from torture, the right to a fair trial, and respect for private and family life.

Alongside rights come responsibilities. Every citizen is expected to obey the law, pay taxes honestly, serve on a jury if summoned, and respect the rights of others. This balance between individual freedom and social duty is a cornerstone of a stable democratic society.

9. The Media and Public Opinion |

The media – including television news, newspapers, radio and social media – provides information about politics and holds those in power to account. A free press is essential in a democracy because it allows citizens to question decisions, expose wrongdoing and debate alternative ideas.

However, not all information is trustworthy. Media bias, sensationalism and misinformation can distort public understanding. Developing media literacy – checking multiple sources, distinguishing fact from opinion, and spotting bias – is a vital skill for any politics student. As you follow the news this summer, try to compare how different outlets report the same event.

10. Active Citizenship and Your Role |

Active citizenship means being involved in your community to make a positive difference. It goes beyond voting and includes actions such as volunteering for a charity, signing e-petitions, writing to your MP about an issue you care about, or starting a campaign in school. Even small actions can influence decision-makers.

This summer bridging course encourages you to put your learning into practice. Choose a local or national issue that matters to you – for example, recycling, mental health support or youth facilities – and research it from different angles. Then draft a short proposal outlining the problem, why it matters and what change you would like to see. This mini-project will sharpen your research, analysis and communication skills, preparing you perfectly for the active citizenship investigation required in AQA GCSE Citizenship Studies.
