1. What is Business? |

A business is any organisation that produces goods or provides services to satisfy people’s needs and wants. Goods are physical items you can touch, such as books, trainers or pizzas. Services are intangible activities done for you, such as haircuts, online tutoring or bus journeys. The main purpose of a business is to create value for customers while earning revenue for its owners.

Needs are things we must have to survive, such as food, water and shelter. Wants are additional desires that make life more comfortable or enjoyable, like a new smartphone or a holiday. Businesses identify gaps in the market where needs or wants are not fully met and try to fill them.

2. Enterprise and Entrepreneurs |

An entrepreneur is a person who spots a business opportunity, takes the financial risk and organises the resources needed to start and run a business. Famous entrepreneurs include people like Steve Jobs and Madam C.J. Walker. Enterprise is the skill of turning ideas into successful businesses – it involves creativity, determination and the willingness to take calculated risks.

Key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs include: initiative (starting things independently), innovation (developing new products or ways of working), resilience (bouncing back after failure) and leadership (motivating others to work towards a common goal). Not all entrepreneurs are driven only by profit; some create social enterprises to tackle problems like poverty or pollution.

3. Types of Business Organisations |

Businesses can take several legal forms, each with different implications for ownership, control, liability and how profits are taxed. The most common types studied at Year 8 level are sole traders, partnerships, private limited companies and franchises.

Full control, keeps all profits
Shared skills and capital
Separate legal identity, cannot sell shares to public
Franchise 特许经营 Franchisee runs the outlet Varies 视约定 Uses an established brand and system

Unlimited liability means the owner is personally responsible for all the business’s debts, possibly risking personal assets like a house. Limited liability means the owners (shareholders) only lose the money they invested in the business; their personal belongings are protected. This is a crucial concept when choosing a business structure.

4. Stakeholders |

Stakeholders are individuals, groups or organisations that have an interest in or are affected by the activities of a business. They can be internal (inside the business) or external (outside the business). Understanding stakeholders helps a business make balanced decisions.

Internal stakeholders include owners/shareholders (who want profits and growth), managers (who want good salaries and promotion prospects) and employees (who want job security, fair pay and safe working conditions). External stakeholders include customers (who want quality products at reasonable prices), suppliers (who want reliable orders and prompt payment), the local community (who want jobs and a clean environment) and the government (which collects taxes and expects businesses to follow laws).

Stakeholder conflict often arises because different groups have different objectives. For example, paying higher wages to employees may reduce the profit available to shareholders. A business must consider these trade-offs when making strategic choices.

5. Market Research |

Market research is the process of gathering, analysing and interpreting information about a market, customers and competitors. It helps businesses reduce the risk of failure by understanding what consumers really want before launching a product.

There are two main types of market research: primary (field) research and secondary (desk) research. Primary research involves collecting new, first-hand data through methods like questionnaires, interviews, focus groups or observing customer behaviour. It is specific to the business’s needs but can be time-consuming and expensive. Secondary research uses existing data, such as government statistics, internet reports, trade journals and internal sales records. It is usually cheaper and quicker, but may not be perfectly tailored to the business’s exact question.

Data can be quantitative (numerical, such as ‘65% of teenagers prefer fizzy drinks’) or qualitative (descriptive, such as ‘customers said the packaging felt luxurious’). A good market research project often uses both to get a full picture.

6. The Marketing Mix |

The marketing mix is a set of controllable tools that a business uses to influence customers into buying its products. It is often remembered as the ‘4 Ps’: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Each element must work together to meet the needs of the target market.

The good or service offered to satisfy a need Design, features, quality, branding, packaging
Price 价格 How much customers pay High-end pricing, discount pricing, competition-based pricing
Place 渠道 How and where the product reaches the customer Retail shops, online store, wholesalers, distribution channels
Promotion 促销 Communication to inform and persuade customers Advertising, social media, sales promotions, public relations

Product decisions involve creating the right mix of features, quality and branding. Price must reflect the value customers place on the product, cover costs and remain competitive. Place is about making the product available in convenient locations or via efficient online platforms. Promotion covers all the ways a business communicates its message, from social media ads to in-store displays. For a new skateboard brand, for example, the 4Ps must all appeal to teenagers: cool design (product), affordable but not cheap price, sold both online and in skate shops (place), and promoted through Instagram and sponsored skaters (promotion).

7. Business Costs, Revenue and Profit |

Understanding costs, revenue and profit is essential for any business. Costs are the expenses a business pays in order to produce and sell its goods or services. Revenue is the income earned from selling those products. Profit is what remains after all costs have been deducted from revenue.

Costs are usually divided into fixed costs and variable costs. Fixed costs do not change with the level of output – examples include rent, insurance and manager salaries. Variable costs change directly with output – for a pizza restaurant, these would be flour, cheese and topping ingredients.

Total Costs = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs

Revenue is calculated by multiplying the selling price per unit by the number of units sold. A simple stall selling lemonade for £1 per cup that sells 200 cups earns revenue of £1 × 200 = £200.

Revenue = Selling Price × Quantity Sold

Profit shows whether the business is financially successful. If total costs are higher than revenue, the business makes a loss. A business can increase profit by raising prices, cutting costs or selling more products – but each choice has consequences for customers and competitiveness.

Profit = Revenue − Total Costs

8. Business Plans |

A business plan is a written document that describes a business idea, its objectives, how it will operate, and its financial forecasts. It serves as a roadmap for the entrepreneur and is often required by banks when applying for a loan or by investors considering putting money into the business.

Typical sections of a business plan include: an executive summary (a brief overview), a description of the business and its products, market research findings (who the customers are and who the competitors are), a marketing plan (how the 4Ps will be used), an operations plan (location, equipment, suppliers), the management team, and financial projections (start-up costs, forecasted revenue and profit, cash flow forecast).

Writing a business plan forces the entrepreneur to think carefully about all aspects of the business, to spot potential problems early and to set measurable targets. It also helps to persuade others that the idea is viable.

9. Business Objectives |

Business objectives are the specific goals a business sets out to achieve. They give direction, help motivate employees and provide a way to measure success. Without clear objectives, a business can lose focus and waste resources.

Common financial objectives include: survival (especially for new businesses), profit maximisation, sales growth and increasing market share. Market share is the proportion of total market sales that a business captures. For example, if the whole market for trainers in a town is £500,000 and a shop sells £100,000 worth, its market share is 20%.

Many businesses now also set social objectives, such as reducing environmental impact, supporting local charities or treating suppliers fairly. Social enterprises may have a primary objective of creating social or environmental good, rather than simply maximising profit. Objectives can change over time: a start-up may first aim to survive and later shift to growth once it is established.

10. Introduction to Cash Flow |

Cash flow is the movement of money into and out of a business over a period of time. Cash inflows are money coming in, such as sales revenue, money from loans or investment by owners. Cash outflows are money going out, such as paying wages, buying raw materials, paying rent and utility bills.

A business must manage its cash flow carefully because even a profitable business can fail if it runs out of cash to pay its immediate bills – a situation known as insolvency. A cash flow forecast predicts future inflows and outflows, helping the business see months where a cash shortfall might occur. This allows managers to arrange an overdraft, delay payments or speed up collections from customers.

The key difference between profit and cash flow is timing: profit records sales when they are made, even if the customer has not yet paid, while cash flow tracks the actual movement of cash. A business can show a profit on paper but still have negative cash flow if customers are slow to pay. This is why both profit and cash flow must be monitored.
