1. What is Accounting? |

Accounting is often called the ‘language of business’. It is a system for recording, summarising and reporting financial information. Every time a business buys supplies, sells a product, pays wages or borrows money, accounting captures that event. The main purpose of accounting is to help owners, managers and other users make decisions. For example, financial records show whether a business is making a profit or a loss, how much cash is available, and what the business owns and owes. Without accounting, businesses would be flying blind.

2. The Accounting Equation |

The fundamental idea in accounting is the accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities + Equity. Assets are resources the business controls, such as cash, equipment and inventory. Liabilities are amounts the business owes to others, like bank loans or money owed to suppliers. Equity represents the owner’s stake in the business. This equation must always balance. If a business buys a computer for £500 using cash, one asset (cash) decreases by £500 while another asset (equipment) increases by £500 – the equation remains in balance.

3. Assets, Liabilities and Equity in Detail |

Assets are typically divided into current assets (used or turned into cash within one year, like inventory and bank balances) and non-current assets (kept for longer than a year, like buildings and vehicles). Liabilities also come in current (payable within one year, such as trade payables) and non-current (long-term loans). Equity includes the initial money the owner put in, plus any profits kept in the business. Understanding these categories is essential because they form the structure of the statement of financial position.

4. Income and Expenses |

Income is the money a business earns from its normal activities, usually from selling goods or services. Expenses are the costs incurred to earn that income, such as rent, electricity, wages and the cost of goods sold. When total income is greater than total expenses, the business makes a profit. If expenses exceed income, the result is a loss. The simple relationship is: Profit = Income – Expenses. Monitoring income and expenses helps a business understand its performance over a period.

5. The Double Entry System |

One of the most important concepts you will learn is double entry bookkeeping. Every transaction affects at least two accounts – one account is debited, and another is credited. The total value of debit entries must equal the total value of credit entries. This system keeps the accounting equation in balance and reduces errors. For example, if a business makes a cash sale of £200, the cash account is debited (increase in asset) and the sales account is credited (increase in income).

6. Ledger Accounts and T-Accounts | 分类账与 T 形账户

Ledger accounts are individual records for every asset, liability, equity, income and expense item. A simple way to visualise a ledger account is the T-account. It has a left side (debit) and a right side (credit). Transactions are entered on the appropriate side according to the rules of double entry. For instance, the cash account increases on the debit side and decreases on the credit side. Practising T-accounts helps you see how each transaction affects the financial position of the business.

7. Recording Transactions: Source Documents |

Before any entry is made in the accounts, there must be a source document. These are the original records that provide evidence of a transaction. Common source documents include invoices (when a sale or purchase is made on credit), receipts (proof of cash received), cheque counterfoils and bank statements. In CCEA Accounting, you will learn to identify different source documents and understand the information they contain. They are essential for accuracy and help auditors verify the accounts.

8. The Trial Balance |

A trial balance is a list of all ledger account balances at a particular date. It is prepared to check the accuracy of the double entry bookkeeping. The total of all debit balances should equal the total of all credit balances. If they do not match, there is an error that needs to be found and corrected. While a balanced trial balance is a good sign, it does not prove that there are no mistakes at all – some errors, like recording a transaction in the wrong account, may not be revealed.

9. Financial Statements: An Introduction |

Financial statements are the final output of the accounting process. The two main statements you will meet in Year 8 are the income statement (sometimes called the profit and loss account) and the statement of financial position (often called the balance sheet). The income statement shows the profit or loss over a period, matching income with the expenses incurred. The statement of financial position shows the assets, liabilities and equity at one point in time, following the accounting equation. Together, they give a picture of business performance and financial health.

10. Cash vs Profit: A Key Distinction |

Many beginners confuse cash with profit. Cash is the actual money the business has in its bank account or as physical currency. Profit is the difference between income and expenses over a period. A business can be profitable but short of cash if customers have not yet paid or if it has spent heavily on equipment. Equally, a business could have plenty of cash because it borrowed money, without being profitable. Understanding this difference helps you interpret financial information more wisely.

11. Ethics and Accuracy in Accounting |

Accountants are expected to act with integrity, objectivity and care. The CCEA curriculum touches on the importance of ethical behaviour in business. Figures must be recorded accurately, supported by evidence, and free from bias. Deliberately misstating accounts can mislead investors, lenders and the tax authorities. Even at Year 8, you will begin to appreciate why honesty and precision matter. Good accounting practices build trust and support fair economic activity.

12. Getting Ready for Year 8: Practical Tips |

To make the most of your summer bridging work, try keeping a simple record of your own pocket money or a pretend business for four weeks. Create a small cash book, noting all money in and out. Practise drawing T-accounts for each type of transaction. You can also look at everyday examples: a receipt from a shop, a bank statement, or a small business’s price list. Ask yourself: what would be recorded in the accounts? Do not worry about getting everything perfect – the aim is to start thinking like an accountant.
