1. Needs and Wants |

A need is something you cannot live without. Think of water, food, a safe place to sleep and basic clothing. These are essential for survival.

Memory hook: Imagine the word “Need” has a double ‘e’ for “extreme essential”. If you take it away, you wouldn’t survive for long.

A want is something you would like to have but is not necessary for survival. New trainers, video games and holidays are wants.

Mnemonic: “Want” starts with “W” like “wish”. A wish is nice, but you can live without it.

2. Goods and Services |

Goods are physical items you can see and touch, such as a pencil, a sandwich or a bicycle. They are tangible.

Mnemonic: “Goods” has “G” like “grip” – you can grip goods in your hand.

Services are activities that someone does for you. You cannot hold them, but you benefit from them. Haircuts, bus journeys and online tutoring are services. They are intangible.

Memory hook: Think of “Service” starting with “S” like “serve”. A waiter serves you – you experience the action, not a take-home item.

3. Entrepreneur | 企业家

An entrepreneur is someone who spots a business opportunity, takes a risk and sets up a new venture. They organize the other factors of production to make a profit.

Mnemonic: Break it down – “Entre-pre-neur” sounds like “enter-a-new-venture”. An entrepreneur enters a new venture with energy.

Think of famous young entrepreneurs like those who started lemonade stands or sold handmade bracelets. They saw a chance and acted on it.

4. Profit and Loss |

Profit is the money left over after all costs have been paid. If a business earns more revenue than its expenses, it makes a profit.

Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs

When costs are higher than revenue, the business makes a loss. A loss means the business spent more than it brought in.

Memory trick: Picture a seesaw. Profit is when the revenue side is heavier and lifts the costs side up. Loss is when the cost side weighs the seesaw down.

5. Market | 市场

A market is any place (physical or online) where buyers and sellers meet to exchange goods and services. It can be a local farmer’s market, a shopping centre or an app store.

Mnemonic: “Market” has “mark” and “et”. Think of traders marking prices on stalls. A market is where price ‘marks’ are set.

There are different types of markets: local markets, national markets and global markets. Even your school’s bake sale is a mini-market.

6. Factors of Production |

Businesses need resources to make goods and services. These resources are grouped into four factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise.

  • Land includes all natural resources like water, minerals and forests.

  • Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production.

  • Capital refers to man-made tools, machinery and buildings used to produce goods.

  • Enterprise is the skill of bringing the other three factors together to run a business, provided by entrepreneurs.

Mnemonic: Use the letters L-L-C-E. “Lazy Lions Catch Everything”. Land, Labour, Capital, Enterprise.

7. Consumer and Customer |

A customer is the person who buys a product or service. They pay the money at the checkout or online.

A consumer is the person who actually uses the product. Sometimes the customer and consumer are the same person, but not always.

Memory hook: Imagine a parent buying cereal (customer) and the child eating it (consumer). “CUSTOMer pays at the CUSTOM counter; CONSUMer CONSUMES the food.”

This distinction matters in business because advertising might target the consumer while the sale is aimed at the customer.

8. Marketing Mix (The 4 Ps) | 营销组合(4P)

The marketing mix is a set of four key decisions a business makes to sell its products successfully. They are Product, Price, Place and Promotion.

  • Product: What you are selling – its design, features and packaging.

  • Price: How much customers pay. It must cover costs and attract buyers.

  • Place: Where the product is sold and how it reaches the customer.

  • Promotion: How customers are told about the product, e.g. adverts, social media.

Mnemonic: “Please Pass the Pepperoni Pizza”. The first letters stand for Product, Price, Place, Promotion.

9. Sources of Finance |

Businesses need money to start up and grow. Sources of finance describe where this money comes from. They can be internal or external.

Internal sources include retained profit (profit kept in the business) and selling assets. External sources include bank loans, overdrafts and crowdfunding.

Memory trick: Internal = “inside the business pockets”. External = “entering from outside”. Think of external as EX-ternal, like an EX-it door – money coming in from outside.

A young entrepreneur might use personal savings (internal) or ask family for a loan (external). Choosing the right source depends on risk and cost.

10. Enterprise Skills |

Enterprise skills are the abilities and qualities that help an entrepreneur succeed. They include creativity, risk-taking, problem-solving, teamwork and communication.

Mnemonic: Create a superhero team “Captain Enterprise”. Each member has a skill: Creative Crusader, Risk Rocket, Problem-Solver Pro, Team Titan, Communicator Comet.

These skills are not just for business – you use them in group projects, sports and planning school events. Being enterprising means making ideas happen.

11. Supply and Demand |

Demand is the quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price. Generally, when price falls, demand rises.

Supply is the quantity of a product that producers are willing and able to sell at a given price. When price rises, supply often increases.

Memory hook: Imagine a tug-of-war. Demand pulls from the consumer side, supply pulls from the producer side. The market price is where the rope balances.

A simple mnemonic: “D for Demand, D for Downward slope” – as price drops, quantity demanded goes up; “S for Supply, S for Soaring upwards”.

12. Business Objectives |

Business objectives are the goals a business sets to achieve over a period of time. They give direction and a way to measure success. Common objectives include survival, profit maximization, growth and providing a service.

Memory framework: “S.P.G.S.” – Survival, Profit, Growth, Service. Think of a sprout growing: first it survives, then it pushes for nutrients (profit), grows bigger, and provides a beautiful flower (service).

New businesses often focus on survival. Once established, they aim for profit and later for growth. Social enterprises may prioritize service over profit.
