1. States of Matter and Particle Theory | 物质状态与粒子理论

In Year 8 chemistry, you explore the three states of matter — solids, liquids and gases. The particle model explains their behaviour by treating matter as tiny particles in constant motion. This theory helps you understand properties such as shape, volume and compressibility.

在 Year 8 化学中,你将探索物质的三种状态——固体、液体和气体。粒子模型通过把物质看作不断运动的微小粒子来解释它们的行为。该理论帮助你理解形状、体积和可压缩性等性质。

In solids, particles are tightly packed in a regular arrangement and only vibrate in fixed positions. This gives solids a fixed shape and a fixed volume. They cannot be easily compressed because there is little space between the particles.

在固体中,粒子紧密排列成规则的图案,只能在固定位置上振动。这使得固体有固定的形状和固定的体积。由于粒子之间几乎没有空间,固体难以被压缩。

Liquids have particles that are close together but can slide past one another. They have a fixed volume but take the shape of the bottom of their container. The particles move more freely than in solids, which allows liquids to flow.

液体的粒子彼此靠近,但能相互滑过。它们有固定的体积,但会呈现容器底部的形状。粒子比在固体中运动得更自由,因此液体能够流动。

Gases have particles that are far apart and move rapidly in all directions. Gases have no fixed shape or volume and will spread out to fill any container. They can be compressed easily because of the large spaces between particles.

气体的粒子距离很远,向各个方向快速运动。气体没有固定的形状和体积,会扩散并充满整个容器。由于粒子间有很大的空间,气体很容易被压缩。

Changes of state, such as melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation and condensation, can be explained by the particle model. During these physical changes, the mass of the substance stays the same – mass is conserved.

状态变化,如熔化、凝固、沸腾、蒸发和冷凝,都可以用粒子模型来解释。在这些物理变化过程中,物质的质量保持不变——质量守恒。

2. Atoms and Elements: Building Blocks of Matter | 原子和元素:物质的构建块

Everything around you is made of atoms, the smallest particles of an element that still retain its chemical properties. An element is a substance that consists of only one type of atom. There are around 100 naturally occurring elements, each with its own unique properties.

你周围的一切都是由原子构成的,原子是保持元素化学性质的最小粒子。元素是只由一种原子组成的物质。自然界大约存在 100 种元素,每种都有其独特的性质。

Each element is represented by a chemical symbol, usually one or two letters. The first letter is always uppercase, and if there is a second letter, it is lowercase. For example, carbon is C, oxygen is O, iron is Fe (from Latin ‘ferrum’) and sodium is Na (from Latin ‘natrium’).

每种元素用一个化学符号表示,通常由一到两个字母组成。第一个字母始终大写,若有第二个字母则小写。例如,碳是 C,氧是 O,铁是 Fe(源自拉丁语 ‘ferrum’),钠是 Na(源自拉丁语 ‘natrium’)。

You should be familiar with the symbols of these common elements: H (hydrogen), He (helium), Li (lithium), C (carbon), N (nitrogen), O (oxygen), F (fluorine), Ne (neon), Na (sodium), Mg (magnesium), Al (aluminium), Si (silicon), P (phosphorus), S (sulfur), Cl (chlorine), K (potassium), Ca (calcium), Fe (iron), Cu (copper), Zn (zinc), Ag (silver) and Au (gold).

你应该熟悉下列常见元素的符号:氢 (H)、氦 (He)、锂 (Li)、碳 (C)、氮 (N)、氧 (O)、氟 (F)、氖 (Ne)、钠 (Na)、镁 (Mg)、铝 (Al)、硅 (Si)、磷 (P)、硫 (S)、氯 (Cl)、钾 (K)、钙 (Ca)、铁 (Fe)、铜 (Cu)、锌 (Zn)、银 (Ag) 和金 (Au)。

Atoms themselves are made of even smaller subatomic particles — protons, neutrons and electrons. In Year 8, the emphasis is on recognising atoms as the fundamental building blocks of matter, and you will learn more about subatomic structure in later years.

原子本身由更小的亚原子粒子组成——质子、中子和电子。在 Year 8,重点是认识原子是物质的基本构建块,亚原子结构的更多知识将在高年级学习。

3. The Periodic Table: Organising Elements | 周期表:元素的组织

The periodic table is a chart that arranges all known elements in order of increasing atomic number. It groups elements with similar chemical properties together, making it an incredibly useful tool for chemists. Mendeleev developed one of the earliest versions by leaving gaps for undiscovered elements.

周期表是一张按原子序数递增排列所有已知元素的图表。它将化学性质相似的元素归为一组,是化学家极为有用的工具。门捷列夫通过为未发现的元素留出空格,开发了最早的周期表版本之一。

Elements are arranged in horizontal rows called periods and vertical columns called groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell and therefore react in similar ways. Group 1 contains the alkali metals, which are very reactive, while Group 7 contains the halogens and Group 0 contains the unreactive noble gases.

元素排列在称为周期的横行和称为族的纵列中。同一族的元素最外层电子数相同,因此反应方式相似。第 1 族包含非常活泼的碱金属,第 7 族是卤素,第 0 族是反应性极低的稀有气体。

Metals are found on the left-hand side and in the centre of the periodic table, while non-metals occupy the right-hand side. A zigzag line often separated the two. You should be able to identify whether an element is a metal or a non-metal simply by looking at its position on the table.

金属位于周期表的左侧和中间,非金属则占据右侧。通常用一条锯齿线将两者分开。你应该能仅通过观察元素在周期表中的位置来判断它是金属还是非金属。

4. Compounds and Chemical Formulas | 化合物与化学式

When two or more different elements chemically combine, they form a compound. The atoms are joined by chemical bonds and the resulting substance has completely new properties. For example, sodium (a reactive metal) and chlorine (a toxic gas) join to form sodium chloride, which is safe table salt.

当两种或多种不同元素发生化学结合时,就形成了化合物。原子通过化学键结合在一起,生成的物质具有全新的性质。例如,钠(一种活泼金属)和氯(一种有毒气体)结合生成氯化钠,也就是安全的食盐。

Compounds are represented by chemical formulas that show the types and numbers of atoms present. The formula H₂O tells you that one molecule contains two hydrogen atoms (subscript 2) and one oxygen atom. Carbon dioxide is CO₂, and sulfuric acid is H₂SO₄.

化合物用化学式表示,化学式显示了所含原子的种类和数量。化学式 H₂O 表明一个分子含有两个氢原子(下标 2)和一个氧原子。二氧化碳是 CO₂,硫酸是 H₂SO₄。

When naming simple compounds, the metal element is usually written first, followed by the non-metal with its ending changed to ‘-ide’. For example, magnesium and oxygen form magnesium oxide, and sodium and chlorine form sodium chloride. If more than one compound exists between two elements, prefixes like mono-, di- and tri- can be used.

命名简单化合物时,通常先写金属元素,然后写非金属元素,并将非金属的词尾改为’-ide’。例如,镁和氧生成 magnesium oxide,钠和氯生成 sodium chloride。如果两种元素之间存在多种化合物,可以使用前缀 like mono-、di- 和 tri-。

Importantly, a compound is not a mixture. The elements in a compound are chemically bonded and can be separated only by breaking those bonds using a chemical reaction.
