1. What is Media? |

Media refers to the various channels and technologies used to communicate information, ideas and entertainment to a large number of people. The word ‘media’ is the plural of ‘medium’, meaning a means of conveying something. In everyday life, media is all around us — from the moment we check our phones in the morning to when we watch a film before bed. It includes everything from traditional newspapers to the latest viral TikTok video.

There are three broad categories of media platforms: print, broadcast and digital. Print media includes physical items like magazines, posters, comic books and leaflets. Broadcast media transmits audio and video signals to audiences, such as television channels and radio stations. Digital media covers content distributed through the internet and electronic devices, including websites, social media apps, online games, podcasts and streaming services. Each platform has its own strengths and ways of reaching people.

2. Media Language: Visual Codes |

Every media product uses a set of codes to communicate meaning. Visual codes are the elements we can see in an image or a moving sequence. One of the most important visual codes is the camera shot. An extreme long shot (ELS) shows a large area, often establishing the setting, while a long shot (LS) shows the full figure of a person in their environment. A medium shot (MS) frames a person from the waist up, and a close-up (CU) focuses on the face or an important detail. An extreme close-up (ECU) hones in on a single feature like an eye or a button.

Camera angles also influence how we perceive a subject. A low-angle shot looks up at a character, making them appear powerful or threatening. A high-angle shot looks down, making a character seem small or vulnerable. An eye-level shot creates a sense of equality and normality. Additionally, lighting creates mood: bright, high-key lighting suggests happiness or clarity, while low-key lighting with lots of shadows creates mystery or tension. Colours are chosen deliberately — warm colours like red and yellow evoke energy or danger, while cool colours like blue suggest calm or sadness.

3. Media Language: Audio and Text Codes |

Sound is a powerful code in moving image media and radio. Diegetic sound is any sound that exists within the world of the story — for example, characters talking, a door slamming, or music playing from a car radio. Non-diegetic sound is added in post-production, such as background music, a voice-over narration or sound effects the characters cannot hear. A soundtrack can manipulate the audience’s emotions, building tension in a horror scene or suggesting romance in a love story.

Text-based codes are equally important, especially in print and digital media. The font style, size and colour all carry meaning. A serif font (with little feet on the letters) can look traditional and serious, while a sans-serif font looks modern and clean. Bold text grabs attention, italics can suggest a quote or emphasis, and all-caps can feel like shouting. The layout of text and images on a page — known as composition — guides the reader’s eye. A masthead on a magazine cover identifies the brand, while cover lines hint at the stories inside. Everything is placed intentionally to create meaning.

4. Genre and Media Forms |

Genre is a way of categorising media products based on shared conventions. For example, in film, the horror genre often features dark lighting, isolated settings, jump scares and a final girl character. The superhero genre typically includes a hero with special powers, a villain, a dramatic costume and a city under threat. Recognising genre conventions helps audiences quickly understand what to expect, and it helps media producers market their work to the right people. However, genres can also mix — a ‘rom-com’ blends romance and comedy conventions, creating something fresh.

Media forms refer to the different types of media products. Common forms include newspapers, television news bulletins, advertising posters, film trailers, music videos, video games, radio dramas and social media stories. Each form has its own set of production practices and audience expectations. A film poster, for instance, uses a dominant central image, a tagline, star names and a release date to attract viewers, whereas a radio news bulletin relies on a presenter’s voice, short sound clips and a strict time structure.

5. Target Audience and Audience Classification |

All media products are made with a specific audience in mind. The target audience is the group of people a media text is aimed at. Producers consider demographic factors such as age, gender, occupation and income level. They also look at psychographics — the attitudes, interests and lifestyle of the audience. For example, a magazine about extreme sports targets a young, adventurous, predominantly male audience with an interest in adrenaline-fuelled activities. A children’s animated series targets a much younger audience, with bright colours, simple language and moral lessons.

In the UK, audience classification systems such as the NRS (National Readership Survey) social grades are often used. The grades range from A (higher managerial, professional) to E (casual workers, pensioners). This helps advertisers decide where to place their adverts. A luxury car brand would advertise in upmarket magazines read by A and B social grades, while a fast-food chain might target broader audiences through television spots and social media. Media texts are also classified by age ratings, such as U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18 for films, ensuring content is appropriate for the intended age group.

等级范围从A(高级管理、专业人士)到E(临时工、退休者)。

6. Representation and Stereotypes |

Representation refers to how media texts portray people, places, events and ideas. It is never simply a reflection of reality; it is a construction. Someone has chosen what to include and what to leave out, how to frame a shot, what words to use. For instance, a news report about teenagers may represent them as either troublemakers or high achievers, shaping public perception. Young people are often represented in the media as either dangerous, lazy or, in advertising, aspirational and fun-loving.

A stereotype is a simplified, often exaggerated representation of a group, based on a few easily recognisable characteristics. Common stereotypes include the ‘geeky’ scientist wearing glasses, the ‘damsel in distress’ needing rescue, or the ‘grumpy’ old person. While stereotypes can offer a quick shortcut for storytelling, they can be harmful because they ignore the diversity and individuality of real people. Media producers sometimes challenge stereotypes by creating countertypes — representations that go against the expected norm, such as a nurturing male nurse or a female action hero who is the leader. Analysing representation means asking: who is being represented, how, and what effect this has on the audience.

7. Narrative Structure and Storytelling |

Narrative is simply the way a story is told. Most stories follow a recognisable structure that helps the audience make sense of events. One classic model is the three-act structure. The first act introduces the characters, the setting and a problem or disruption. The second act shows the protagonist facing a series of obstacles, with tension rising. The third act provides a climax — the moment of highest suspense — followed by a resolution where loose ends are tied up. Many films, television dramas and even advertisements follow this pattern in a compressed form.

Characters play key roles in driving the narrative. A protagonist is the main character the audience is meant to root for. An antagonist opposes the protagonist, creating conflict. There are also archetypes such as the mentor who guides the hero, the sidekick who provides support and humour, and the shapeshifter whose loyalty is uncertain. In media studies, we also consider narrative devices like flashbacks, which reveal past events, and parallel editing, which cuts between two different scenes happening at the same time to build suspense. Understanding narrative helps us see how media texts keep us engaged.

8. The Media Industry: Production, Distribution and Exhibition |

Every media product goes through three main stages: production, distribution and exhibition. Production involves all the work of creating the content — from writing the script and casting actors to filming, editing and adding special effects. Distribution is the process of getting the product to the audience. This could mean delivering films to cinemas, putting magazines on shop shelves, or making a video available on streaming platforms. Exhibition is where the audience finally consumes the product — in a cinema, on a television set, through a mobile app or by reading a printed copy.

Money plays a huge role in the media industry. Most media products are financed through advertising revenue, subscriptions, pay-per-view or public funding (like the BBC licence fee). Commercial television channels rely on selling advertising slots during popular programmes. Magazines combine cover price with advertising income. A big-budget Hollywood blockbuster can cost over £100 million to produce and market, and it needs to earn back that money through ticket sales, product placement and home media sales. Ownership also matters: large media conglomerates like Disney, News Corp and the BBC own many different companies across various media platforms, which allows them to cross-promote their products.

9. Advertising and Persuasive Techniques |

Advertising is everywhere, and its purpose is to persuade. Adverts use a range of persuasive techniques to make us feel a need or desire for a product. One common technique is the use of emotional appeal, which targets our fears, hopes or desires. A charity advert might use images of suffering to evoke guilt and compassion, while a perfume advert appeals to dreams of romance and luxury. Celebrity endorsement uses famous people to promote a product, implying that we can be like them if we buy it.

Other techniques include repetition, where a slogan, jingle or logo is shown repeatedly so it sticks in our minds. Bandwagon suggests that ‘everyone is using this product, so you should too’. Exaggeration (hyperbole) overstates a product’s benefits — ‘This washing powder makes whites whiter than white!’. Adverts also use rhetorical questions (‘Tired of dull skin?’), statistics (‘8 out of 10 cats prefer it’) and expert opinion (a dentist recommending toothpaste). The use of direct address, such as saying ‘you’, makes the viewer feel personally spoken to. Deconstructing an advert means identifying these techniques and thinking about how they work on different audiences.

10. Digital Media, Social Media and Media Literacy |

Digital media has transformed the way we create, share and access content. Unlike traditional media, digital media is interactive: we are not just consumers but also producers. Anyone with a smartphone can film, edit and upload a video to YouTube, Instagram or TikTok. Social media platforms encourage user-generated content, from tweets and status updates to live streams. This democratisation of media production is exciting, but it also raises questions about reliability, privacy and the impact on our wellbeing.

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyse, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. It means being able to spot fake news, check sources, and understand that algorithms determine what we see in our feeds. For Year 8 students, staying safe online is crucial: protect personal information, be respectful in comments, and use privacy settings. By developing critical thinking skills, you learn to ask questions like ‘Who made this?’, ‘What techniques are being used to attract my attention?’, and ‘What is missing from this message?’. These skills will help you navigate the media landscape wisely and responsibly.
