1. Matter and Particle Model | 物质与粒子模型

Matter is made up of tiny particles that are constantly moving. The arrangement and movement of these particles determine the state: in solids, particles are held in fixed positions and only vibrate; in liquids, particles are close together but can move past one another; in gases, particles are far apart and move quickly in all directions.

When a substance changes state, energy is transferred rather than the particles changing. For example, during melting, particles gain energy and break free from their fixed positions. The reverse process, freezing, releases energy. The mass stays constant because the number of particles does not change.

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. It occurs in liquids and gases but not in solids because particles cannot move freely. 2. Atoms, Elements and Compounds | 原子、元素与化合物

An atom is the smallest part of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction. Atoms consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in shells. All atoms of a given element have the same number of protons, called the atomic number. The charge of the nucleus is positive, while electrons carry a negative charge, making the overall atom neutral.

An element contains only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. A compound contains two or more different types of atoms chemically joined in fixed proportions. The properties of a compound are entirely different from those of the elements it is made from.

A chemical formula shows the symbol of each element present and the ratio of atoms. For example, water is H₂O, meaning two hydrogen atoms for every one oxygen atom. A chemical equation uses formulas to represent a reaction. The law of conservation of mass states that no atoms are lost or made, so equations must be balanced:

3. The Periodic Table | 元素周期表

The periodic table arranges all known elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same vertical column, or group, have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell. Horizontal rows are called periods; as you move across a period, the elements become less metallic.

Group 1 elements, the alkali metals, are soft, shiny and highly reactive. They react vigorously with water to produce a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas. Group 7 elements, the halogens, are non-metals that form coloured vapours; reactivity decreases down the group as it becomes harder to gain an electron.

4. Chemical Reactions and Equations | 化学反应与方程式

In a physical change, no new substances are made; changes of state and dissolving are examples. In a chemical change, new substances are formed, and the change is usually difficult to reverse. Evidence of a chemical reaction includes colour change, temperature change, formation of a precipitate or gas being given off.

During a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged but no atoms are created or destroyed. This is the law of conservation of mass. Therefore, the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. A balanced symbol equation uses chemical formulas and numbers to reflect this conservation.
