Knowing stage directions helps you understand a script and follow a director’s instructions. All directions are from the actor’s point of view when facing the audience.

Upstage (US): The area furthest from the audience. Moving upstage can make a character appear distant or secretive.

When you open a playscript, certain formatting features always appear. Recognising them makes you a confident reader and a better writer of your own scenes.

Dialogue: The spoken lines between characters. Each line is written after the character’s name.
