📚 Year 8 Edexcel Economics: Core Knowledge Points Review | Year 8 Edexcel

Economics is the study of how people make choices to satisfy their wants and needs using limited resources. This article provides a structured revision of the key concepts covered in Year 8 Edexcel Economics, helping you build a solid foundation for future studies.

1. The Economic Problem: Scarcity |

Scarcity means that there are not enough resources to produce all the goods and services that people want. Because our wants are unlimited but the resources (such as land, labour, capital and enterprise) are limited, we face scarcity.

The consequence of scarcity is that we must make choices. Economics is often called the science of choice because it studies how individuals, businesses and governments allocate scarce resources.

2. Choice and Opportunity Cost |

Whenever a choice is made, something is given up. The opportunity cost of a choice is the next best alternative forgone. For example, if a student chooses to study economics instead of going out with friends, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment lost from not socialising.

Opportunity cost helps us understand trade-offs. All decision-makers, from consumers to governments, face trade-offs. A government spending more on healthcare may have less to spend on education. The opportunity cost is the education that could have been improved.

3. Factors of Production |

The four factors of production are the resources used to produce goods and services. They are: Land (natural resources), Labour (human effort), Capital (man-made tools and machinery), and Enterprise (the ability to combine the other factors and take risks).

Land Natural resources used in production | 生产使用的自然资源 Rent | 租金
Labour Human effort, skills and knowledge | 人类努力、技能和知识 Wages/Salaries | 工资
Capital Man-made aids to production (machinery, factories) | 人造生产辅助工具(机器、厂房) Interest | 利息
Enterprise The ability to organise the other factors and innovate | 组织其他要素并创新的能力 Profit | 利润

Each factor earns a different type of income. Rent is earned by land, wages by labour, interest by capital and profit by enterprise. Understanding factors of production helps us analyse how economies produce goods and services.

4. Demand | 需求

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given period, ceteris paribus (other things being equal). The law of demand states that as the price of a good increases, the quantity demanded decreases, and vice versa. This inverse relationship is caused by the income and substitution effects.

A change in the price of the good itself causes a movement along the demand curve. However, other factors such as changes in income, tastes, prices of related goods (substitutes and complements) and expectations cause the entire demand curve to shift.

5. Supply | 供给

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices over a given period. The law of supply states that, ceteris paribus, as the price increases, the quantity supplied increases. Producers are motivated by higher profits, so they are willing to produce more when the price is higher.

Factors that can shift the supply curve include changes in production costs (such as wages, raw material prices), technology improvements, taxes and subsidies, and the number of sellers in the market. A movement along the supply curve is caused only by a change in the good’s own price.

6. Market Equilibrium and the Price Mechanism |

In a free market, the interaction of supply and demand determines the equilibrium price and quantity. Equilibrium occurs where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. At this point, there is no shortage or surplus.

If the market price is above equilibrium, there is a surplus (excess supply), and the price tends to fall. If the price is below equilibrium, there is a shortage (excess demand), pushing the price up. The price mechanism is the system by which prices adjust to balance supply and demand, allocating resources efficiently without central planning.

7. Elasticity – A Simple Introduction |

Elasticity measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded or supplied to changes in price or other factors. Price elasticity of demand (PED) is calculated as: % change in quantity demanded divided by % change in price.

PED = % Δ Quantity Demanded ÷ % Δ Price

If PED > 1, demand is elastic (responsive); if PED < 1, demand is inelastic (less responsive).

Goods with many substitutes or luxury items tend to have elastic demand, while necessities and goods with few substitutes have inelastic demand. Producers and governments use elasticity to predict the effect of price changes on total revenue and tax policies.

8. Money and Banking |

Money serves three main functions: medium of exchange, unit of account, and store of value. Without money, economies would rely on barter, which is inefficient. Modern money includes cash and bank deposits.

Commercial banks play an important role in the economy by accepting deposits and making loans. They facilitate payments and help channel savings into investment. Central banks, such as the Bank of England, issue currency, regulate banks, and conduct monetary policy to control inflation.

9. Government Intervention in the Economy |

Governments intervene in the economy for various reasons: to correct market failures, provide public goods (such as street lighting and defence), redistribute income, and stabilise the economy. Market failure occurs when the free market does not allocate resources efficiently, such as with pollution (a negative externality).

Common policies include taxation, subsidies, price controls (maximum and minimum prices), and direct provision of services like education and healthcare. Indirect taxes can discourage harmful consumption, while subsidies encourage beneficial activities.

10. International Trade and Globalisation |

International trade allows countries to specialise in producing goods where they have a comparative advantage, leading to more efficient global resource use. Exports bring money into a country, while imports represent spending abroad. The balance of trade is the difference between the value of exports and imports.

Globalisation is the process of increasing interconnectedness of economies through trade, investment, technology and migration. It brings benefits such as lower prices and greater variety of goods, but also challenges like job losses in some industries and environmental concerns.
