1. Scarcity and Choice |

Scarcity means that there are limited resources but unlimited wants. Because we cannot have everything, we must make choices. This is the basic economic problem every society faces: deciding what to produce, how to produce it, and who gets the goods and services produced.

Memory tip: Think of a pizza that eight friends have to share. The pizza is scarce because there is only one, but everyone wants a slice. You must choose how to divide it. The word ‘scarce’ sounds like ‘scare’ — the limited amount can scare you into making a decision!

2. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice. It is not just the money you spend, but what you lose by not choosing the second-best option. Every decision has an opportunity cost.

Example: If you have £10 and you choose to buy a book instead of a cinema ticket, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment you would have gained from the film. Remember: Opportunity Cost = the missed ‘op’ (opportunity) that costs you something.

3. Needs and Wants |

Needs are the basic items required for survival: food, water, shelter, clothing and healthcare. Wants are things that make life more enjoyable but are not essential, such as video games, holidays, or designer clothes. The difference helps us understand why scarcity exists — we always want more than we need.

Memory hook: ‘Need’ has four letters, like ‘life’. ‘Want’ has four letters, too — but think of ‘w’ as the extra ‘want’ that extends beyond basic needs. In Chinese, 需 has a ‘rain’ radical, hinting that water is a basic need.

4. Goods and Services |

Goods are physical items you can see and touch, such as apples, books, and shoes. Services are actions provided by others that you cannot hold, like haircuts, teaching, and bus rides. Together they make up all the things we buy in an economy.

Tip: If you can drop it on your foot, it’s a good. If you cannot, it’s probably a service. That quick test works almost every time.

5. Factors of Production |

The factors of production are the resources used to produce goods and services. They are often remembered by the acronym CELL: Capital (machinery, tools, buildings), Enterprise (the skill of combining other factors to start a business), Land (natural resources), and Labour (human effort).

  • Capital: Not just money, but productive equipment. Think of a tractor, a sewing machine, or a factory building.
  • Enterprise: The risk-taking ability of an entrepreneur who organises production.
  • Land: All natural resources — soil, water, minerals, forests, and even fish in the sea.
  • Labour: Physical and mental effort put into work. The workforce of a country.

6. Supply and Demand |

Demand is the quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices during a given time. Supply is the quantity that producers are willing and able to sell at different prices. Prices often rise when demand exceeds supply and fall when supply exceeds demand — the invisible hand of the market.

Memory image: Picture a seesaw. On one side sits Demand, on the other Supply. The price is the middle fulcrum. When demand goes up and supply stays the same, the demand side gets heavier and the price tilts upward. When supply increases, the supply side gets heavier and the price tilts down.

7. Market and Price |

A market is any place or system where buyers and sellers come together to exchange goods and services. This does not have to be a physical space — an online platform is also a market. The price is the amount of money that a buyer pays to obtain a good or service. Prices act as signals: high prices tell producers to make more, while low prices tell consumers to buy more.

Key phrase: ‘Price is a signal wrapped in an incentive.’ A high price gives an incentive to producers to increase supply; a low price gives an incentive to consumers to increase demand.

8. Money | 货币

Money is any asset that is widely accepted as a medium of exchange for goods and services. It also serves as a store of value and a unit of account. Without money, people would have to barter — swapping one good for another directly, which is inefficient because it requires a double coincidence of wants.

Think of the three jobs of money with the rhyme: ‘A medium to spend, a measure to compare, a store for later — money is everywhere.’

9. Budgeting | 预算

A budget is a plan of future income and spending over a period of time. Individuals, families, businesses and governments all use budgets to manage their finances. A budget helps you avoid overspending by showing you exactly how much money you expect to receive and how much you plan to spend. If your spending is greater than your income, you have a deficit; if your income is greater, you have a surplus.

Memory phrase: ‘Budget is a money map — plan before you tap.’ Always know where your money is going.

10. Saving and Investing |

Saving means putting aside part of your income to use later, often by keeping it in a bank account where it earns interest. Investing is using your saved money to buy assets like shares, bonds, or property, hoping they will grow in value over time. Saving is generally safer, while investing involves more risk but the potential for higher returns.

Simple rule: ‘Save for a rainy day, invest for a sunny future.’ Keep your emergency fund in savings, and think about investing for long-term goals.

11. Taxes | 税收

Taxes are compulsory payments to the government, charged on income, profits, property and spending. They are the main source of government revenue and are used to pay for public services such as roads, schools, hospitals and defence. Common types include income tax, value-added tax (VAT) and corporation tax.

Visual aid: Picture a large community cake. Everyone contributes a slice (tax), and that cake is shared back through public services for all to benefit. No tax — no cake!

12. Trade | 贸易

Trade is the voluntary exchange of goods and services between individuals, businesses, or countries. It allows people to specialise in what they do best and then trade for other things they need. Exports are goods sent out of a country; imports are goods brought into a country. Trade works because of comparative advantage — countries benefit by producing goods they make most efficiently.

Rhyming reminder: ‘Export — send out of port. Import — bring into port.’ The direction is in the prefix: ‘ex-‘ means out, ‘im-‘ means in.
