1. The Stage Directions Formula |

Every actor needs a shared language to navigate the performance space. The stage directions formula provides a universal map. Standing on stage facing the audience, the directions are: Upstage Right (UR), Upstage Centre (UC), Upstage Left (UL), Centre Right (CR), Centre Stage (CS), Centre Left (CL), Downstage Right (DR), Downstage Centre (DC), Downstage Left (DL). Remember the simple rule: ‘Upstage’ is away from the audience, ‘Downstage’ is closest to the audience.

  • To move upstage from centre, walk away from the audience.
  • The formula for crossing diagonally: from DR to UL means you travel upstage-left.
  • When blocking a scene, always describe movement using these nine positions to avoid confusion.

2. The Given Circumstances Theorem |

The ‘given circumstances’ theorem comes from Konstantin Stanislavski. It states that every character exists within a specific set of conditions: who, when, where, what happened before. The imaginative truth of a performance is built by answering: Who am I? Where am I? What time is it? What do I want? What just happened? This theorem is the foundation of naturalistic acting.

  • Before entering a scene, use the formula: Character + Time + Place + Prior Event = Authentic Reaction.
  • The theorem demands that every action on stage must be justified by the circumstances, never performed ‘in general’.

3. The Character Objective Equation |

In drama, a character’s driving force is expressed through an active objective. The objective equation is: I want to + [active verb] + [target person] so that + [desired outcome]. For example: “I want to convince my sister so that she will share her secret.” Avoid static verbs like ‘to be’ and use dynamic verbs such as to persuade, to threaten, to beg, to charm.

  • Break down the equation: Subject (I) + Want + Transitive Verb + Receiver + Intended Effect.
  • A strong objective changes the way you deliver every line and gesture.

4. The GOTE Acting Framework | GOTE

GOTE is a simple but powerful formula for building a character’s action plan, commonly taught at Key Stage 3. It stands for Goal, Obstacle, Tactics, Expectation. Your Goal is what the character wants right now. The Obstacle is what stands in the way. Tactics are the strategies the character uses to overcome the obstacle, and Expectation is what the character anticipates will happen next.

  • Use the GOTE cycle: Goal → Obstacle → New Tactic → Expectation shifts → Revised Goal.
  • This formula keeps a scene alive because when one tactic fails, the character instantly tries another.

5. The Blocking and Movement Rule |

Blocking refers to the precise movement and positioning of actors on stage. The fundamental rule is Motivation → Movement → Meaning. Never move without a reason. A movement is motivated by a thought, a change in objective, or a response to another character. The equation of stage picture: Balance + Focus + Levels = Effective Composition.

  • Directors use the 180-degree rule to maintain clear sightlines: keep the open side of your body towards the audience unless hiding emotion deliberately.
  • Levels theorem: varying standing, sitting, and floor positions creates visual interest and power dynamics.

6. The Voice Projection Theorem |

The voice theorem states that effective projection is never about shouting; it is about Breath + Resonance + Articulation. The diaphragm is the engine. The resonance chambers (chest, throat, mouth, nasal) amplify the sound. Crisp consonants carry meaning across the space. The formula for filling a large room: Deep inhalation → Supported exhalation → Open throat → Clear diction.

  • Pitch theorem: lower pitch often conveys authority; higher pitch can suggest urgency or youth.
  • Pace theorem: rapid pace signals excitement or panic; slow pace suggests calm, threat or deep thought.

7. The Emotional Memory Technique |

Emotional memory (or affective memory) is a Stanislavskian technique where the actor recalls a personal experience to generate genuine emotion on stage. The formula is: Sense Memory → Trigger → Parallel Emotion → Controlled Expression. You do not relive the memory fully but borrow the sensory details (smell, temperature, texture) to fuel the character’s emotion.

  • Safety theorem: always use memories that are processed and safe; the goal is artistic truth, not personal distress.
  • The ‘as if’ variation: instead of real memory, ask “What would it be like if…” to imagine the sensation.

8. The Epic Theatre Formula (Brecht) |

Bertolt Brecht’s epic theatre aims to make the audience think critically rather than become emotionally absorbed. The core formula is Verfremdungseffekt (Alienation Effect): the actor deliberately breaks the illusion to remind the audience they are watching a constructed story. Techniques include direct address, placards, narration, visible lighting changes and multi-roling.

  • Gestus theorem: a clear physical gesture or pose that sums up a social relationship or attitude in one snapshot.
  • Brecht’s formula: Narrate → Show → Comment → Alienate, creating a ‘dialectical’ theatre that provokes debate.

9. The Plot Structure Equation |

Most narratives follow a recognisable dramatic structure. The classic equation is Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Denouement. In a one-act Year 8 devised piece, the structure often simplifies to: Beginning (Status Quo) → Disruption → Conflict → Crisis → Resolution. The tension arc resembles a mountain shape.

  • Plot theorem: every scene must contain a change – in power, knowledge, or emotional state – or it is not dramatic.
  • Checklist formula: Who drives the scene? What is at stake? How does it end differently from how it began?

10. The Tension and Atmosphere Theorem |

Tension is the audience’s desire to know what happens next. It is created through the formula: Conflict + Uncertainty + Time Pressure. Atmosphere is the emotional ‘weather’ of a scene, shaped by Lighting + Sound + Pacing + Space. Both can be manipulated to control the audience’s breathing and heartbeat.

  • The silence theorem: often the most intense moment is a pause; silence after a loud noise creates maximum impact.
  • Contrast formula: a happy scene becomes fragile when the audience knows danger is approaching – this is dramatic irony.

11. The Rehearsal Process Cycle |

Effective rehearsal follows a cyclical formula rather than mere repetition. The cycle is: Explore → Experiment → Select → Polish → Perform → Reflect. In the explore phase, try multiple interpretations of a line or moment. Experiment with voice, movement and props. Then select the strongest choices and polish them through repetition.

  • Table-read rule: always begin script work sitting around a table, clarifying meaning and objectives before moving.
  • The ‘stop and correct’ theorem: fixing mistakes immediately prevents embedding wrong patterns into muscle memory.

12. The Evaluation and Reflection Formula |

In OCR Drama, you are assessed on your ability to analyse and evaluate your own work and that of others. The evaluation formula is: What was intended → What actually happened → Why it worked or did not → What you would improve. Use subject-specific vocabulary such as proxemics, subtext, timbre, and transition.

  • Feedback theorem: always start with a positive, then a specific area to develop, then a question to provoke further thought.
  • Reflection journal formula: Today I learnt… I found challenging… My target for next rehearsal is…
