1. Introduction to Business Studies |

Business Studies is all about understanding how organisations work, how they make decisions, and how they meet the needs of customers. In Year 8, we will start by looking at the fundamental question: what is a business? We will explore different types of businesses, from small local shops to huge multinational corporations. You will also learn why people start businesses and what makes them successful. This summer programme will introduce you to the key vocabulary and concepts so that you feel prepared and curious.

2. Needs and Wants |

One of the first things we consider in business is the difference between needs and wants. Needs are things we must have to survive, such as food, water, shelter and clothing. Wants are things we would like to have but can live without, like a new smartphone, a holiday or designer trainers. Businesses exist to satisfy both needs and wants, but they often focus on wants because they can charge higher prices for luxury items. Understanding this distinction helps businesses decide what products or services to offer.

3. Goods and Services |

Businesses provide either goods or services – or sometimes both. Goods are physical products you can touch, such as a bicycle, a book or a chocolate bar. Services are intangible activities that one person performs for another, like a haircut, a bus journey or an online tutorial. Many businesses today combine the two; for example, a restaurant provides a good (food) and a service (the waiting staff). As a young learner, try to spot examples of goods and services around your home and neighbourhood this summer.

4. Factors of Production |

Every business needs resources to produce goods or services. These resources are called the factors of production and are traditionally grouped into four categories: land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land includes all natural resources, such as oil, water and agricultural fields. Labour means the human effort involved in production, both physical and mental. Capital refers to man-made items used to make other goods, like machinery, tools and factory buildings. Enterprise is the ability to bring the other three factors together and take the risk of starting a business. Without enterprise, the other factors would not be combined effectively.

5. Enterprise and Entrepreneurship |

Enterprise is the skill of spotting opportunities and turning ideas into a business reality. An entrepreneur is someone who takes on the financial risk of starting a new business in the hope of making a profit. Successful entrepreneurs, such as the founders of well-known brands, share common characteristics: they are creative, determined, willing to take risks and good at problem-solving. During the summer, you can start thinking like an entrepreneur by noticing problems in your daily life and brainstorming simple business ideas that could solve them.

6. Business Sectors: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary |

The economy is divided into three main sectors of business activity. The primary sector involves extracting and harvesting raw materials from the earth – examples include farming, fishing, mining and forestry. The secondary sector takes these raw materials and turns them into finished goods; this includes manufacturing, construction and food processing. The tertiary sector provides services to consumers and businesses, such as retail, banking, education and tourism. In the UK, the tertiary sector is the largest employer, and this trend is likely to continue. Understanding these sectors helps you see how different businesses are linked in a chain of production.

7. Types of Business Ownership |

Businesses can be owned in different ways, and each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. The simplest form is a sole trader, where one person owns and runs the business. A partnership involves two or more people sharing the responsibilities and profits. Private limited companies (Ltd) are owned by shareholders and have a separate legal identity, which protects the owners’ personal assets. Public limited companies (PLC) can sell shares to the public on the stock exchange. Larger businesses often choose to become companies to raise more capital and expand.

As you prepare for Year 9, remember that unlimited liability means the owners can lose their personal belongings if the business fails, while limited liability means they only lose the money they invested in the company.

8. Marketing Basics |

Marketing is not just about advertising – it is about identifying customer needs and satisfying them profitably. The marketing mix, often called the 4 Ps, includes Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Product refers to the good or service that meets a customer need. Price is how much customers pay and must cover costs while being attractive. Place is where and how the product is sold, such as in shops, online or via delivery. Promotion covers all methods of communication used to inform and persuade customers, from social media adverts to special offers. A business must get the right mix of these four elements to be successful.

9. Finance and Budgeting |

Every business needs to manage money carefully. The two key financial ideas for Year 8 are revenue (the money coming in from sales) and costs (the money going out to run the business). Profit is what remains when revenue is greater than costs. A simple budget helps a business plan its spending and predict whether it can make a profit. You can practise this at home by keeping a record of your pocket money and spending – this is just like a business keeping financial records. Understanding basic finance will give you a strong base for the numeracy skills needed in Business Studies.

10. The Role of Business in Society |

Businesses do more than just make money. They provide employment, pay taxes that fund public services, and often support local communities through sponsorship and charity work. A successful business can improve living standards and introduce innovations that make life easier. However, businesses can also have negative impacts, such as pollution or creating too much waste. That is why we now study business ethics and sustainability – the idea that businesses should act responsibly towards the environment and society. This summer, you can watch the news for stories about companies doing good or causing harm and start forming your own opinion.

11. Summer Preparation Tips |

To get the most out of your summer bridging course, here are some practical tips. First, keep a business diary: each day, write down one business you noticed, what it sells and who its customers might be. Second, watch documentaries or child-friendly business shows – they bring concepts to life. Third, talk to family members about their jobs or any businesses they have run; real stories are powerful learning tools. Fourth, try a mini-enterprise project at home, like a lemonade stand or selling homemade cards, to experience being an entrepreneur. Finally, review the key terms in this article and try to explain them to someone else in your own words.

12. Bridging to Year 9 | 衔接九年级

Moving into Year 9, you will build on everything you have learned here. You will study topics such as business aims and objectives, more detailed marketing strategies, break-even analysis, sources of finance, and the impact of technology on businesses. You will also begin to answer longer exam-style questions using the WJEC command words like ‘explain’, ‘analyse’ and ‘evaluate’. By completing this summer programme, you are giving yourself a real head start. Approach the new school year with confidence, keep asking questions, and remember that every big business started with a small idea – just like the ones you have been thinking about this summer.
