1. The Golden Rule: Basic Word Order (SVO) | 黄金法则:基本语序 (SVO)

Chinese follows a fixed Subject – Verb – Object order, similar to English. This is the foundation of all sentences. Unlike some languages, the verb does not change form for person or number.

中文遵循固定的主语 – 谓语 – 宾语语序,与英语相似。这是所有句子的基础。与某些语言不同,动词不会因为人称或单复数而改变形式。

Subject + Verb + Object
主语 + 动词 + 宾语

Time expressions (today, every day, yesterday) usually appear before the verb or at the very beginning of the sentence. Adverbs also come before the verb.

时间词 (今天、每天、昨天) 通常出现在动词之前或句首。副词也放在动词前面。

Example: I eat apples every day. → 我每天吃苹果 (Wǒ měitiān chī píngguǒ).

例句:我每天吃苹果。

Example: She studies Chinese at school. → 她在学校学中文 (Tā zài xuéxiào xué Zhōngwén).

例句:她在学校学中文。

2. Yes/No Questions with 吗 | 用 “吗” 的是非问句

To turn a statement into a yes/no question, simply add the particle 吗 (ma) at the end of the sentence. No change in word order is needed.

要把陈述句变成是非问句,只需在句尾加上助词 “吗”。无需改变语序。

Statement + 吗?
陈述句 + 吗?

Example: You are a student. → 你是学生 (Nǐ shì xuéshēng).
Question: Are you a student? → 你是学生吗?(Nǐ shì xuéshēng ma?)

例句:你是学生。 → 你是学生吗?

Never use 吗 when the question already contains a question word like 什么 or 谁.

如果问句中已经包含了 “什么” 或 “谁” 等疑问词,就不能再用 “吗”。

3. Wh-Questions: 什么, 谁, 哪里, 什么时候 | 特殊疑问词:什么、谁、哪里、什么时候

Wh-questions in Chinese keep the normal SVO order. The question word is simply placed where the answer would go. No inversion is required.

中文的特殊疑问句保持正常的SVO语序。疑问词直接放在答案所处的位置,无需倒装。

Subject + Verb + Question Word (Object/Place/Time)?
主语 + 动词 + 疑问词 (宾语/地点/时间)?

  • 什么 (shénme) – what. 这是你的名字?不对,用”什么”应放在宾语位置 Example: 你叫什么名字?(Nǐ jiào shénme míngzì?) What is your name? 你叫什么名字?
  • 谁 (shéi/shuí) – who. Example: 他是谁?(Tā shì shéi?) Who is he? 他是谁?
  • 哪里 (nǎlǐ) / 哪儿 (nǎr) – where. Example: 你在哪里?(Nǐ zài nǎlǐ?) Where are you? 你在哪里?
  • 什么时候 (shénme shíhou) – when. Example: 你什么时候去?(Nǐ shénme shíhou qù?) When are you going? 你什么时候去?

Note that the structure remains “Subject + Verb + Question Word” even for ‘when’ and ‘where’.

注意,即使是问 “什么时候” 或 “哪里”,结构也保持 “主语 + 动词 + 疑问词”。

4. Negation Formulas: 不 vs. 没 | 否定公式:不 与 没

Chinese uses two main negation words: 不 (bù) and 没 (méi). Their usage follows clear formulas depending on the time frame and type of verb.

中文有两个主要的否定词:不 和 没。根据时间和动词类型,它们的用法遵循明确的公式。

不 (bù) Used for present/future actions, adjectives, and habitual facts. 用于现在/将来的动作、形容词和习惯性事实。
没 (méi) Used for past actions (negating completed events) and with 有. 用于过去动作 (否定已发生事件) 以及与“有”连用。

Subject + 不 + Verb/Adjective (present/future)
主语 + 不 + 动词/形容词 (现在/将来)

Subject + 没 + Verb (past) / 没有 + Noun
主语 + 没 + 动词 (过去) / 没有 + 名词

Examples: 我不喜欢咖啡 (Wǒ bù xǐhuān kāfēi) – I don’t like coffee. 我不喜欢咖啡。
他没去学校 (Tā méi qù xuéxiào) – He didn’t go to school. 他没去学校。
我没有笔 (Wǒ méi yǒu bǐ) – I don’t have a pen. 我没有笔。

With adjectives, always use 不: 他不高 (Tā bù gāo) – He is not tall. 他不高。

5. Measure Words: A Must for Nouns | 量词:名词的必备伙伴

In Chinese, a measure word (classifier) must be used between a number/demonstrative and a noun. You cannot say “one book” directly; you need a measure word.

在中文里,数词或指示词与名词之间必须使用量词。你不能直接说 “一个书” 也要用量词,正确的结构是 “数词 + 量词 + 名词”。

Number/Demonstrative + Measure Word + Noun
数词/指示词 + 量词 + 名词

Common measure words for Year 8:

  • 个 (gè) – general measure word for people and many objects. 一个人 (yí ge rén) – one person; 一个苹果 (yí ge píngguǒ) – one apple.
  • 本 (běn) – for books and bound items. 一本书 (yī běn shū) – one book.
  • 张 (zhāng) – for flat objects (paper, tables, tickets). 一张纸 (yī zhāng zhǐ) – one piece of paper.
  • 支 (zhī) – for long, thin objects (pens, pencils). 一支笔 (yī zhī bǐ) – one pen.
  • 杯 (bēi) – a cup/glass of. 一杯水 (yī bēi shuǐ) – a glass of water.

When using 这 (zhè) this or 那 (nà) that, a measure word is still required: 这本书 (this book).

使用 “这” 或 “那” 时,同样需要量词:这本书。

6. Present Continuous: 在/正在 | 正在进行的动作:在/正在

To express an action in progress, use 在 (zài) or 正在 (zhèngzài) before the verb. This is equivalent to the English “-ing” form.

要表达正在进行的动作,在动词前使用 “在” 或 “正在”。这相当于英语的进行时态。

Subject + 在/正在 + Verb (+ Object)
主语 + 在/正在 + 动词 (+ 宾语)

Example: 我在吃饭 (Wǒ zài chī fàn) – I am eating (a meal). 我在吃饭。
妈妈正在看电视 (Māma zhèngzài kàn diànshì) – Mum is watching TV. 妈妈正在看电视。

You can also add 呢 (ne) at the end of the sentence to soften the tone or confirm an ongoing situation: 他睡觉呢 (Tā shuìjiào ne) – He is sleeping. 他睡觉呢。

你还可以在句尾加上 “呢” 来缓和语气或确认正在进行的状态:他睡觉呢。

7. Completed Action: 了 | 动作完成:了

The particle 了 (le) placed immediately after a verb indicates that the action is completed. It does not mark past tense in all cases but signals a finished event.

助词 “了” 紧跟在动词之后,表示动作完成。它并不总是表示过去时,而是标记事件的完结。

Subject + Verb + 了 + Object
主语 + 动词 + 了 + 宾语

Example: 我吃了三明治 (Wǒ chīle sānmíngzhì) – I ate a sandwich. 我吃了三明治。
他买了新手机 (Tā mǎile xīn shǒujī) – He bought a new mobile phone. 他买了新手机。

When negating a completed action, remove 了 and use 没 or 没有: 我没吃三明治 (Wǒ méi chī sānmíngzhì) – I didn’t eat a sandwich. 我没吃三明治。

Object with a number or quantity keeps 了; if the object is a simple noun, 了 often appears at the end of the sentence for emphasis. For now, stick to the verb+了 formula.

当宾语带有数量时,了 保留在动词后;如果宾语是简单名词,了 常在句尾出现以表示强调。目前先掌握动词+了的公式即可。

8. Past Experience: 过 | 过去经历:过

To talk about experiences or something you have done at least once in the past, use 过 (guo) directly after the verb. This pattern is often used for asking “Have you ever…?”

要谈论经历或过去至少做过一次的事情,在动词后直接加 “过”。这个句式常用来问 “你曾经……过吗?”

Subject + Verb + 过 + Object
主语 + 动词 + 过 + 宾语

Example: 我去过中国 (Wǒ qùguo Zhōngguó) – I have been to China. 我去过中国。
你吃过日本菜吗?(Nǐ chīguo Rìběn cài ma?) – Have you ever eaten Japanese food? 你吃过日本菜吗?

Negation uses 没(有): 我没去过中国 (Wǒ méi qùguo Zhōngguó) – I haven’t been to China. 我没去过中国。

Unlike 了, 过 specifically refers to experience and implies the event is not connected to the present result. 了 often has a current relevance.

与 “了” 不同,”过” 专门指经历,暗示事件与当前结果没有联系。而 “了” 常带有现时相关性。

9. Comparative with 比 | 比较公式:比

To compare two things in Chinese, use the preposition 比 (bǐ). The structure is straightforward and avoids adjective changes like “-er”.

中文里比较两个事物,用介词 “比”。结构直接,形容词无需变形。

A + 比 + B + Adjective
A 比 B + 形容词

Example: 我比你高 (Wǒ bǐ nǐ gāo) – I am taller than you. 我比你高。
苹果比香蕉贵 (Píngguǒ bǐ xiāngjiāo guì) – Apples are more expensive than bananas. 苹果比香蕉贵。

Add intensity with words like 一点儿 (yìdiǎnr) ‘a little’ or 得多 (de duō) ‘much more’ after the adjective: 我比你高一点儿 (Wǒ bǐ nǐ gāo yìdiǎnr) – I am a little taller than you. 我比你高一点儿。
这个比那个好得多 (Zhège bǐ nàge hǎo de duō) – This one is much better than that one. 这个比那个好得多。

Never use 很 (hěn) before the adjective in a 比 sentence. 不 is used to form the negative: A 不比 B + Adj (but more common is 没有 structure).

在 “比” 字句中,形容词前不能加 “很”。否定形式用 “不比”,但更常用 “没有” 结构。

10. Possession and Modification: 的 | 所属与修饰:的

The particle 的 (de) is incredibly versatile. It links a possessor to a thing, attaches adjectives to nouns, and forms relative clauses.

助词 “的” 用途广泛。它能连接所有者和物品,把形容词与名词连接起来,还能构成定语从句。

Possessor/Noun + 的 + Noun
所有者/名词 + 的 + 名词
Adjective + 的 + Noun
形容词 + 的 + 名词

Examples: 我的书 (wǒ de shū) – my book. 我的书。
学校的图书馆 (xuéxiào de túshūguǎn) – the school’s library. 学校的图书馆。
漂亮的花 (piàoliang de huā) – beautiful flowers. 漂亮的花。

Sometimes 的 can be omitted with close personal relationships (我妈妈 wǒ māma) or short adjective-noun pairs when the adjective is single syllable and describing an inherent quality (蓝蓝的天 can keep 的). But for Year 8, including 的 is always safe.

有时在亲密关系或单音节形容词描述固有性质时可省略 “的”,但对 Year 8 来说,保留 “的” 总是安全的。

11. The 是……的 Structure for Emphasis | 是……的强调结构

When you want to emphasise the time, place, manner or agent of a past completed action, use the 是……的 (shì…de) construction. This frames the detail as the important new information.

当你想强调一个过去完成动作的时间、地点、方式或动作执行者时,使用 “是……的” 结构。这将细节凸显为新信息。

Subject + 是 + Detail + Verb + 的 (+ Object)
主语 + 是 + 细节 + 动词 + 的 (+ 宾语)

Example: 我是昨天来的 (Wǒ shì zuótiān lái de) – It was yesterday that I came. (Emphasising time) 我是昨天来的。
他是坐飞机去的 (Tā shì zuò fēijī qù de) – He went by plane. (Emphasising manner) 他是坐飞机去的。
这本书是在图书馆借的 (Zhè běn shū shì zài túshūguǎn jiè de) – This book was borrowed from the library. (Emphasising place) 这本书是在图书馆借的。

Note that the action must be completed. The negation is 不是……的: 我不是昨天来的 (Wǒ bú shì zuótiān lái de) – I didn’t come yesterday.

请注意,动作必须是已完成的。否定形式为 “不是……的”。

12. Serial Verb Construction: 去 + Place + Do Something | 连动句:去+地方+做什么

To express going to a place to do something, Chinese uses a sequence of verbs without any linking word. The first verb indicates movement, the second the purpose.

要表达去某地做某事,中文用一连串动词,中间没有连词。第一个动词表示移动,第二个动词表示目的。

去 + Place + Verb Phrase (purpose)
去 + 地方 + 动词短语 (目的)

Example: 我去商店买水 (Wǒ qù shāngdiàn mǎi shuǐ) – I go to the shop to buy water. 我去商店买水。
她去朋友家吃饭 (Tā qù péngyou jiā chī fàn) – She goes to a friend’s house to eat. 她去朋友家吃饭。

This pattern can also be used with 来 (lái): 他来学校学中文 (Tā lái xuéxiào xué Zhōngwén) – He comes to school to learn Chinese. 他来学校学中文。

You can also add 想 (xiǎng) or 要 (yào) before 去 to express intention: 我想去图书馆看书 (Wǒ xiǎng qù túshūguǎn kàn shū) – I want to go to the library to read. 我想去图书馆看书。

你也可以在 “去” 前加上 “想”
