📚 Year 8 WJEC Philosophy: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | 八年级WJEC哲学:暑期预习与衔接课程
Welcome to your Year 8 WJEC Philosophy summer bridging course! This guide is designed to introduce you to the exciting world of philosophical thinking and prepare you for the topics you will explore in class. Philosophy is all about asking big questions, challenging assumptions, and learning to reason clearly.
1. What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy comes from the Greek words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom), meaning the love of wisdom. Rather than a fixed set of facts, philosophy is an activity: it involves thinking deeply about the most fundamental questions of human existence.
In Year 8 philosophy, you will explore questions such as: What is real? How do we know things? What makes an action right or wrong? Philosophers don’t always agree on answers, but they share a commitment to reasoning and careful argument.
This course will help you develop skills in critical thinking, open-mindedness, and clear communication – essential for WJEC Philosophy.
2. The Art of Questioning |
Philosophy begins with wonder. From a young age, humans ask ‘Why?’ This natural curiosity is the starting point for philosophical inquiry.
In your WJEC course, you will be encouraged to question assumptions you might take for granted – about the world, yourself, and other people. For example, do we truly see colours the same way, or are our experiences unique?
Learning to ask good questions is more important than finding quick answers. Philosophical questions often open up new ways of thinking rather than closing the discussion.
3. What is Reality? |
Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that asks what reality is. Is the world we see, touch, and hear the only reality, or could there be more than meets the eye?
One famous story is Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Imagine prisoners chained inside a cave, only able to see shadows on the wall. They believe the shadows are the only reality. If one prisoner escapes and sees the outside world, would the others believe him? This story challenges us to consider that our everyday experiences might just be shadows of a deeper truth.
In Year 8, you’ll debate whether things like numbers, beauty, or justice exist in the same way as chairs and trees. These ideas will connect to WJEC topics on reality and perception.
4. How Do We Know What We Know?
Epistemology is the study of knowledge. How do we know that the sun will rise tomorrow? Is our knowledge based on our senses, reason, or both?
Empiricists, like John Locke, argued that we are born as a blank slate (tabula rasa) and all knowledge comes from experience. Rationalists, like Rene Descartes, believed that reason alone can give us certain knowledge, such as ‘I think, therefore I am.’
WJEC Philosophy asks you to weigh up these competing views. Which source of knowledge is more reliable? Can our senses deceive us? (Think about optical illusions!)
| Empiricism: knowledge comes from sensory experience. | |
| Rationalism: knowledge comes from reason and logic. | |
| Example: You know fire is hot because you have felt it. |
| Example: You know 2+2=4 without needing to count objects. | |
By comparing these foundations of knowledge, you sharpen your own epistemological toolkit.
